Specific forms of ocular motor disturbances, such as Duane syndrome, occur with sufficient frequency in certain syndromes that the timing, location, and nature of the developmental disturbance may be established. The presence of this characteristic type of strabismus in a number of cases of hemifacial microsomia, especially the Goldenhar variants, may provide insight into the developmental disturbances of this large, complex group of patients. Evaluation of specific abnormalities of affected patients from the perspective of one discipline may further aid in the "lumping" or "splitting" process

Duane's retraction syndrome (DRS) includes changes in palpebral fissure width along with restriction of ocular motility. Bardet Biedl syndrome (BBS) includes presence of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) with obesity, mental retardation, polydactyly and renal abnormalities. We report a case of rare association of DRS with BBS in a seven-year-old child. The ocular motility examination revealed left DRS with esotropia. Fundus examination revealed findings characteristic of an atypical retinitis pigmentosa. The electro-retinogram waveforms were extinguished both for rods and cones. He was diagnosed as a

PURPOSE: Our aim is to report the co-existence of Duane's retraction syndrome and Wyburn-Mason syndrome, a rare condition characterized by arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the central nervous system and retina.
METHODS: An 11-year-old boy was referred for evaluation of strabismus present since birth. On examination his uncorrected visual acuity was 6/6 in each eye, with small angle left eye esotropia in the primary position, ipsilateral face turn, abduction deficit, lid fissure narrowing in adduction and widening in abduction; plus typical features of left-sided type I Duane syndrome wer

This response addresses readers' comments on our study published in BMC Ophthalmology, which analyzed astigmatic variations among Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS) subtypes. We clarified that our retrospective study relied on clinical data rather than advanced imaging due to practical limitations. Differences in DRS subtype prevalence were attributed to our focus on patients requiring surgical intervention rather than general epidemiological patterns. Age-related refractive variations across different DRS subtypes were found to be statistically insignificant, confirming that age differences did

OBJECTIVE: To define the spectrum of ophthalmic manifestations of Duane's retraction syndrome (DRS) in a large family.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study of 110 among 114 living relatives in an extended family.
METHODS: History and ophthalmic examination obtained on all participants.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Ocular motility, strabismus, visual acuity, binocularity, associated neurologic problems.
RESULTS: Twenty-five individuals were affected with DRS. Twenty-four subjects (96%) had bilateral DRS, but there was a broad spectrum of severity. Strabismus occurred in 76% and amblyopia in 48%. Associa

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether differences in the intrauterine environment caused discordant Duane's retraction syndrome in monozygotic twins.
METHODS: Pathology records were reviewed to determine monozygosity.
RESULTS: Discordant Duane's retraction syndrome was present in twin boys with identical genetic foundations who had different intrauterine environments. The placenta indicated areas of anastomosis between the two umbilical cords suggestive of twin-to-twin transfusion that resulted in a visible growth discordance.
CONCLUSIONS: Intrauterine environment influences ocular development, and

A case of unilateral type I Duane's syndrome associated with muscular dystrophy is presented. The diagnosis of muscular dystrophy (Duchenne type) is firmly established by clinical, biochemical, electrophysiological, and histological observations. The ocular anomali is clearly distinguished from other congenital disorders of eye movements. The combination of these two congenital anomalities is considered to be quite rare.

A 9-year-old boy with Duane's retraction syndrome and morning glory syndrome is presented. The right eye showed a grayish-pink optic disc, which had a deep excavation containing a white mass in its center and was surrounded by an annulus of pigment disturbance, i.e., consistent with the features of morning glory syndrome. The left eye had a congenital disturbance of ocular motility, which was typical of Duane's retraction syndrome. This is probably the first report of the association of Duane's retraction syndrome and morning glory syndrome. It is hypothesized that a noxious stimulus given at

PURPOSE: Duane retraction syndrome (DS) is a rare congenital strabismus with genetic heterogeneity. The genetic causes of DS are not always of monogenic origin; various chromosomal copy number variations (CNVs) have also been reported. The objective of our study was to characterize the CNVs, including gains and losses detected by high-resolution chromosomal microarray in patients with DS.
METHODS: Twenty patients with DS were investigated using high-resolution chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) (Affymetrix CytoScan Array 750 K). Conventional cytogenetic analysis was also performed.
RESULT

Duane retraction syndrome is known to be associated with numerous ocular and systemic anomalies. The authors describe a 7-year-old child with unilateral Duane retraction syndrome type 1 with bilateral posterior microphthalmos. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported coexistence of Duane retraction syndrome with posterior microphthalmos.

PURPOSE: To evaluate clinical properties and surgical outcomes of Duan retraction syndrome (DRS).
METHODS: Twenty-one patients with DRS were evaluated. Surgery was indicated for correction of strabismus, abnormal head position, upshoot-downshoot, and globe retraction. Six patients had undergone surgery. In 5 cases, the lateral rectus muscle was recessed from 4.0 to 7.0 mm combined with "Y-splitting" according to deviation in primary position and degree of globe retraction. In case of significantly positive forced duction test on the medial rectus muscle intraoperatively, simultaneous recessio

Objective In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of diplopia in cases with type 1 Duane retraction syndrome (DRS). Materials and methods This study was a retrospective review of cases involving patients presenting diagnosed with DRS over a period of 24 years. Among these cases, 28 had type 1 DRS and fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The cases were evaluated in terms of age, gender, affected eye, concomitant ocular motility disorders, presence of amblyopia, manifest shift, abnormal head position (AHP), fusion, and stereopsis. Results Sixteen of the patients (57.1%) in the study w

PURPOSE: To report unilateral congenital cataract in a case of ipsilateral Duane retraction syndrome.
CASE REPORT: In this case, we present a six year old girl who was referred with ocular deviation. She had a history of congenital cataract surgery in the left eye at the age of two years. The subject had no associated systemic disease, developmental delay, or positive family history. She was finally diagnosed as having Duane retraction syndrome in the same eye.
CONCLUSION: Duane retraction syndrome can be associated with congenital cataract due to the matching time of gestational development

Duane Retraction Syndrome is a congenital eye movement disorder characterized by a failure of cranial nerve VI to develop normally, resulting in restriction or absence of abduction, restricted adduction and narrowing of the palpebral fissure and retraction of the globe on attempted adduction. Patients with Duane Retraction Syndrome appear to have a significant increase in the number of associated congenital malformations. In the present paper, the authors report a case of Duane Retraction Syndrome with a unique hand abnormality not reported previously.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to visualize the subarachnoid portion of the nervus abducens by magnetic resonance imaging and to analyze whether aplasia of the nervus abducens is an etiologic factor in Duane's retraction syndrome.
METHODS: We performed thin-sectioned magnetic resonance imaging across the brainstem level in 8 cases (11 eyes) that were clinically diagnosed as Duane's retraction syndrome. The same test was applied to 8 healthy control subjects to verify the accuracy of this technique.
RESULTS: The nervus abducens on the affected side could not be observed in 6 (54.5%) of 11
