Dysgeusia limited to sweet taste in myasthenia gravis.

Total dysgeusia, an inability to interpret all of the basic tastes, often occurs with zinc deficiency. Partial dysgeusia (dissociation dysgeusia) is a rare inability to interpret a limited number of these basic tastes. We present the case of a patient with myasthenia gravis who became unable to discern sweet taste, but other basic tastes were unaffected. Such dysgeusia can be explained by obstruction of selective taste receptors in taste cells. We considered that this symptom was induced by an autoimmune mechanism related to myasthenia gravis.

Sodium valproate: cacosmia and dysgeusia as uncommon side effects.

Smell and taste disturbances are potential adverse reactions of many drugs used in Psychiatry, such as antidepressants, anti-Parkinson agents, lithium, minor and major tranquilizers. To our knowledge, only one clinical case regarding valproate and cacosmia has been reported so far. However, several anticonvulsants are reported to cause taste and smell disturbances, although the underlying etiology is currently unclear. Our patient developed cacosmia and dysgeusia when taking valproic acid, both effects quickly disappeared upon drug discontinuation. In this article we not only report this uncom

COVID-19-Associated Parosmia and Dysgeusia: A Case Series.

Impairment of the chemical senses - smell, taste, and chemesthesis - has been pinpointed as one of the main clinical presentations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Chemosensory dysfunction can be quantitative, involving reduction or loss of perception (e.g., hyposmia, anosmia, hypogeusia), and qualitative, involving distortion of perception (parosmia and dysgeusia). Quantitative chemosensory dysfunction is reported more often among COVID-19 patients than qualitative dysfunction. The following report details four patients with a laboratory-assisted diagnosis of COVID-19 who experienced q

Successful Management of Glioblastoma Chemotherapy-Associated Dysgeusia with Gabapentin.

Dysgeusia is a frequent, yet underreported side effect of chemotherapy for cancer. We report here the first use of gabapentin in two glioblastoma patients who developed dysgeusia following intra-arterial administration of carboplatin or oral administration of lomustine, respectively. Treatment initiation was followed by resolution of taste alteration within weeks. Both patients reported significant improvement in their quality of life and regained weight, allowing further chemotherapy cycles. We hypothesized that in these two cases, chemotherapy impeded gustatory cells turnover and function, r

Can atypical dysgeusia in depression be related to a deafferentation syndrome?

Atypical dysgeusia such as having the sensation of a sweet tooth is an uncommon clinical presentation in severe depression. First, we present the case of a 67 year-old-man admitted to the psychiatric ward for depression after a suicide attempt by drug ingestion. The patient manifested a sweet taste sensation in the upper and lower gums that increased with mood swings and notably with severe depressive symptoms. Blood tests showed an elevated serum creatinine level (115 μmol/L), a normocytic anemia (hemoglobin 6.5 mmol/L; MCV 96 fL) and a deficit in vitamin B12 (122.4 pmol/L). The patient recei

Incidental finding of dysgeusia relieved by injections of botulinum toxin A.

OBJECTIVE: We report the unique finding of hemifacial spasm and associated dysgeusia that resolved after treatment with botulinum toxin A (BTX-A). STUDY DESIGN: Case report. METHODS: Three years after undergoing resection of an acoustic neuroma and subsequent resolution of postoperative left-sided facial nerve palsy, a 38-year-old woman presented with new onset of facial spasm and dysgeusia. RESULTS: After three courses of BTX-A injections during a 2-year period, symptoms of both facial spasm and dysgeusia resolved after treatments and returned between treatments. CONCLUSIONS: These findin

Zinc gluconate in the treatment of dysgeusia--a randomized clinical trial.

In the treatment of dysgeusia, the use of zinc has been frequently tried, with equivocal results. The aim of the present randomized clinical trial, which involved a sufficiently large sample, was therefore to determine the efficacy of zinc treatment. Fifty patients with idiopathic dysgeusia were carefully selected. Zinc gluconate (140 mg/day; n=26) or placebo (lactose; n=24) was randomly assigned to the patients. The patients on zinc improved in terms of gustatory function (p <0.001) and rated the dysgeusia as being less severe (p <0.05). Similarly, signs of depression in the zinc group were l

Potent painkiller from spider venom antagonizes P2X3 receptors without dysgeusia.

P2X3 receptors are a validated molecular target in pain syndromes and chronic cough. Known P2X3 inhibitors generally suffer from poor selectivity and efficacy. Taking advantage of peptide combinatorial libraries found in venoms, we describe a P2X3 antagonist from the crab spider Thomisus onustus. This peptide potently inhibits P2X3 in the dorsal root and trigeminal ganglia neurons of rodents, as well as recombinant human P2X3, showing no effect on P2X2 or P2X2/3 receptors. PT6 presents a compact and rigid structure and produces pronounced antinociception in animal models of inflammatory and ne

LiCl Promotes Recovery of Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis and Dysgeusia.

Oral mucositis and taste dysfunction are frequently complained by patients with head and neck cancer receiving radiotherapy, challenging the clinical outcome of cancer treatment. Recent studies have indicated the protective role of Wnt/β-catenin signaling in radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) and its pivotal role in the development and self-renewal of taste buds. The current study hypothesizes that lithium chloride (LiCl), a potent activator of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, can promote the postirradiation restoration of oral mucosa integrity and taste function. To validate this hyp

Dysgeusia induced and resolved by focused ultrasound thalamotomy: case report.

Dysgeusia, or distorted taste, has recently been acknowledged as a complication of thalamic ablation or thalamic deep brain stimulation as a treatment of tremor. In a unique patient, left-sided MR-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy improved right-sided essential tremor but also induced severe dysgeusia. Although dysgeusia persisted and caused substantial weight loss, tremor slowly relapsed. Therefore, 19 months after the first procedure, the patient underwent a second focused ultrasound thalamotomy procedure, which again improved tremor but also completely resolved the dysgeusia. On the bas

Vestibular Schwannoma Presenting as Oral Dysgeusia: An Easily Missed Diagnosis.

We present a case of a fifty-year-old male patient who was referred to the Oral Medicine Department with a complaint of a salty taste. History taking subsequently revealed that the patient was also experiencing intermittent numbness of his left lower lip, tinnitus, and a feeling of fullness in the left ear. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed which revealed a large vestibular schwannoma affecting the left vestibulocochlear nerve, which was treated surgically. This case shows the importance of taking a detailed history in a patient presenting with an initial complaint of oral dysgeusia. It

Chemotherapy-Induced Dysgeusia and Its Perverse Consequences: A Case Report.

Dysgeusia is one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy. Still, there is little information given to patients and limited knowledge about its diagnosis and management. We report the case of a patient under a standard regimen of adjuvant chemotherapy treatment (cisplatin and vinorelbine) who developed a life-threatening case of diabetes mellitus decompensation (hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state) resulting from extreme dietary intake due to severe dysgeusia and polydipsia. Dysgeusia is associated with a wide range of chemotherapy drugs. It is a frequent side effect but often overlooked.

Unlocking the Complex Flavors of Dysgeusia after Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation.

Dysgeusia is a frequently occurring symptom after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) that has important long-term effects on physical, nutritional, and immunologic recovery, as well as on quality of life. Despite the relevance of this symptom, the study of dysgeusia in patients undergoing HCT has been limited, owing in part to its complexity. In this article, we review normal taste function and its clinical evaluation, discuss how dysgeusia uniquely affects patients undergoing HCT, and examine distinct, transplantation-related contributors to dysgeusia that may help elucidate strategies

Pathogenesis and progression of anosmia and dysgeusia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of COVID-19 which was detected in late 2019 in Wuhan, China. As of September 2022, there have been over 612 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 with over 6.5 million associated deaths. In many cases, anosmia and dysgeusia have been identified as primary symptoms of COVID-19 infection in patients. While the loss of smell (anosmia) and loss of taste (dysgeusia) due to COVID-19 infection is transient in most patients, many report that these symptoms persist following recovery. Understanding the pathogenesis o
