Mass Spectrometric Characterization of Metabolites in Ear Cartilage: Congenital Microtia and Normal Auricle.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of the study were to perform mass spectrometric characterization of metabolites in microtic and healthy ear auricular cartilage tissue, to screen the differential metabolites and pathways in these tissues, and to find a connection between the changes in the metabolic pathways and the biochemical properties of the cartilage tissue. METHODS: According to the inclusion criteria, patients with simple microtia admitted to the hospital between June 2017 and January 2018 were selected upon admission. During ear reconstruction surgery, residual auricle cartilage tissues of the pat

Protein profile of ear auricle cartilage and the important role of ITGB1/PTK2 in microtia.

BACKGROUND: Microtia is a congenital malformation of the external ear that involves anything from a small reduction in size to a complete absence. The external ear is composed of elastic cartilage which is also the important skeleton of the outer ear. However no previous study explored the difference between abnormal elastic cartilage and normal cartilage in the molecular level. METHODS: Microtia cartilage and normal cartilage tissue samples from patients subjected to autologous costal cartilage reconstruction were obtained in surgery. Total proteins were extracted and purified, and then prot

External auricle temperature enhances ear-based wearable accuracy during physiological strain monitoring in the heat.

Body core temperature (Tc) monitoring is crucial for minimizing heat injury risk. However, validated strategies are invasive and expensive. Although promising, aural canal temperature (Tac) is susceptible to environmental influences. This study investigated whether incorporation of external auricle temperature (Tea) into an ear-based Tc algorithm enhances its accuracy during multiple heat stress conditions. Twenty males (mean ± SD; age = 25 ± 3 years, BMI = 21.7 ± 1.8, body fat = 12 ± 3%, maximal aerobic capacity (VO2max) = 64 ± 7 ml/kg/min) donned an ear-based wearable and performed a passive

Predictors for Unfavorable Projection of the Constructed Auricle following Ear Elevation Surgery in Microtia Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Nagata's two-stage technique for microtia reconstruction using autologous costal cartilage consists of the implantation of a fabricated cartilage framework and the elevation of the constructed auricle. Achieving long-lasting, sufficient projection of the auricle is a goal of second-stage surgery; however, unfavorable outcomes have been seen in some patients, with suboptimal long-term elevation. The present study aimed to investigate prognostic factors that might contribute to adverse outcomes following the ear elevation operation. METHODS: Outcomes of patients with congenital micr

Networks of Nerve Fibers, and Blood and Lymphatic Vessels in the Mouse Auricle: The Structural Basis of Ear Acupuncture.

OBJECTIVE: Ear acupuncture, as a system for treating and preventing diseases through stimulation of points on the auricle, has been systematically introduced during the last 60 years. Although the auricular cartography was described somatotopically as an inverted fetus by Paul Nogier, MD, the underlying mechanism of auricular stimulation remains unclear. The aim of this research was to gain an understanding of the structural basis of auricular stimulation, as well as showing the distribution of the nerve fibers, and the blood and lymphatic vessels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The distribution of n

Ear reconstruction stage I: Minor modifications in sculpting the auricle support using the 7th and 8th costal cartilages.

BACKGROUND: The verisimilitude of the reconstructed auricle and its long-term stability largely depends on the framework sculpting. This study described three kinds of minor modifications based on Firmin's way of sculpting the auricle framework and reported the clinical outcomes achieved with them. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of congenital microtia patients undergoing detail-improved auricular reconstruction from June 2016 to June 2020. The three kinds of minor modifications included: (1) fabricating the base frame using the 7th costal cartilage, (2) fabricating the helix and

Conductive hearing loss, middle ear ossicular anomalies, malformed thickened lop auricles, and micrognathia. A rare autosomal dominant congenital syndrome.

A rare congenital autosomal dominant syndrome of thickened bilateral lop auricles, conductive hearing loss, ossicular anomalies, and micrognathia is reported. The anomaly is presumably a defect in the first and second branchial arch development during the sixth and seventh weeks of gestation with an auricle abnormality (first and second arch), abnormal incus and malleus (first and second arch), abnormal stapes (second arch), and micrognathia (first arch). Recognition of low-set or malformed auricles with a unilateral or bilateral conductive hearing loss should alert the otolaryngologist to pos

[Surgical management of high-grade ear malformations in childhood].

Malformations of the ear are the most common dysplasias in childhood. Ear malformations are classified into dysplasias of the auricle, of the ear canal, and of the middle and inner ear. The latter types are fortunately relatively rare. Most common is a low-grade dysplasia of the auricle (otapostasis, cup ear). Higher-grade dysplasia of the auricle (microtia II-III) is often associated with syndromes and/or malformations of the ear canal and the middle ear (e.g., congenital aural atresia with high-grade microtia and dysplasia of the middle ear). Functional aspects of hearing and acquisition of

Mirror Ear: A Rare Case of Polyotia.

Polyotia is an anomaly of the external auricle in which the accessory auricle is large enough to closely resemble an additional pinna rather than a skin remnant and cartilage. Polyotia, also known as mirror ear or accessory ear, is a type of ear anomaly in the tragus area, but the term refers to substantial anomalies which resemble an accessory ear, unlike a pre-auricular tag. It is an extremely rare condition and to date, less than 30 cases of polyotia have been reported according to a review of the literature. A variety of theories has been proposed for development of such abnormal external

A novel method to accurately locate the reconstructed auricle.

BACKGROUND: Congenital microtia is a common congenital disease in children, the cause of which is still unclear. At present, the main treatment for congenital microtia is ear reconstruction. Accurately locating of the reconstructed ear on the affected side before ear reconstruction surgery is difficult, while it is the key of successful operation. Our ear reconstruction team has developed a novel method to accurately locate the reconstructed auricle. This novel method has achieved good results in clinical practice. METHODS: Thirty patients with unilateral ear reconstruction, who underwent aur
