Use of costal cartilage in middle ear surgery. Tympanic membrane retraction often occurs in otologic pathology. In an effort to reduce this pathology, the surgical procedure considered incorporates the use of a new material which diminishes retraction and allows freer movement of the eardrum. Since 1991, we have been using costal cartilage allograft obtained from donors and treated to prevent disease transmission. The allografts were used for tympanoplasty, retraction pockets and attic reconstruction. More than 150 patients were treated and the results evaluated in order to determine the indic

Two features of greatest importance in achieving a normal appearance in the reconstruction of an ear with microtia are that a conchal component with sufficient size, shape, and depth is present; and that auricular projection, sufficient in degree to show contours that appear normal from a posterior view, is present. The authors describe the construction of a staged, laminated framework that helps achieve these goals.

Light microscopic and for the first time electron microscopic (EM) studies of involved elastic ear cartilage in a patient with relapsing polychondritis confirm the superficial location of the inflammatory reaction. EM studies of deep cartilage were identical to those on controls except for a rare necrotic cell. Superficial cartilage showed a finely granular electron-dense material. This material, which may be protein, possibly of enzyme or immunoglobulin origin, also surrounded some elastic fibrils. Findings of predominantly superficial changes and the multisystem disease in the present patien

BACKGROUND: Asians with short nose lack the cartilage needed to extend the length of the nose. A rhinoplasty technique using lower lateral cartilage (LLC) repositioning and ear cartilage grafting allows for sufficient nasal lengthening and nasal tip mobility in the correction of short nose in Asians.
METHODS: Short nose was classified into 3 subtypes: type I, II, or III. During LLC repositioning, the LLC was separated from surrounding retaining structures, except at the footplate. The LLC was approximated medially and advanced with a Medpor strut. A silicone dorsal implant was inserted to sui

BACKGROUND: Because of the relatively similar size of organs to human and the physiological and structural similarities, the use of porcine as xenograft donors is progressing very actively. In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of porcine ear cartilage and evaluated its suitability as graft material in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.
METHODS: The auricular cartilage was harvested from two pigs, and subjected to histological examination by immunohistochemical staining. To determine the collagen content, samples were treated with collagenase and weight changes were measured. After

PURPOSE: Despite growing interest in cosmetic piercing, a detailed evaluation of associated medical complications is lacking.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire addressing ear, nose, and other body parts piercing was anonymously presented to 1,000 nurses at a major Midwestern teaching hospital, and responses were obtained from 552.
RESULTS: One hundred sixty (35%) of the 452 nurses who had an ear pierced reported a complication. Three hundred fifty-five (30%) of the 1,200 total pierced sites developed complications that included minor infection (77%), allergic reaction (43%), keloid (2.5

Patients' satisfaction is an important outcome measure in reconstructive surgery and quality assurance is today central in the clinical practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate the patients' satisfaction with the process and final result after reconstruction for congenital microtia. A questionnaire was designed and sent to 78 patients who had undergone unilateral ear reconstruction with autologous rib cartilage during the period 2000-2010. For a multidimensional view the patients answered 42 questions about aesthetic, functional, psychosocial, and clinic-related outcomes. The response r

OBJECTIVES: Recently, radial cartilage incision (first-stage) at an early age combined with free auricular composite tissue grafting (second-stage) can effectively correct the concha-type microtia with the moderate or severe folded cartilage in the middle and upper third auricle, but radial cartilage incision's effects on the growth of the ear remain to be determined. The authors aimed to evaluate the effects of radial cartilage incision in young rabbits model.
METHODS: Ten New Zealand white rabbits were included in our experiment. Two ears of each rabbit were divided randomly into two groups

BACKGROUND: Standard methods of otoplasty may risk anatomical distortion. Previous work showcased a novel, cartilage-sparing technique. This study aimed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the method in a larger cohort.
METHODS: This retrospective study included patients undergoing otoplasty by a single surgeon using a single technique between January 2021 and December 2023. Eligible patients were aged >5 years and had prominent or constricted or cup ears, forming a 2 cm distance from the mastoid. Surgical techniques included novel key-point sutures. Minimum follow-up was 6 months. Dat

BACKGROUND: The popularity of high ear piercing has led to an increased incidence of perichondritis. Damage to the relatively avascular cartilage will make the ear prone to infection. The literature suggests that a piercing gun, mainly used by jewellers to pierce the lobule, may give excessive cartilaginous damage. Therefore some authors favour the piercing needle, as used in piercing studios. But until now, no comparative histological studies have been performed.
PURPOSE OF STUDY: To evaluate the extent of damage to ear cartilage using different piercing techniques.
METHODS: Twenty-two fres

BACKGROUND: Autologous cartilage has been widely used as a material for tympanoplasty and mastoid-obliteration surgery. Since it remains vulnerable to an infectious condition, this study aims to evaluate if it can be used for a chronic suppurative cholesteatomatous ear to achieve single-stage tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy and obliteration of the cavity.
METHODS: From January 1988 to August 1998, the records of patients with cholesteatoma who received cartilage-obliteration surgery performed by Dr. Lien were examined for any infection-associated problems within three months after the operat

Microtia is a congenital malformation of the auricle. The conventional therapy for microtia is reconstruction of the auricle by using the patient's own costal cartilage. Because it is invasive to harvest costal cartilages, less invasive ways for auricular reconstruction need to be established. Recent reports have indicated a new method for the production of cartilaginous particles from human induced pluripotent stem cells. To adopt this method to create an auricular-shaped regenerative cartilage, a novel scaffold with the property of a three-dimensional shape memory was created. A scaffold wit

Acquired ear deformities can arise from various causes, including trauma, burns, cancer resection, and animal bites. This article presents a case of delayed ear reconstruction in a 30-year-old Caucasian female who suffered a traumatic partial ear amputation of the middle helix due to a horse bite. The reconstruction involved a 3-step surgical procedure: implantation of a tissue expander, reconstruction using an autologous septal cartilage graft, and recreation of the retroauricular sulcus. The tissue expander was inserted through a small incision, and inflation was performed over several weeks

Various methods for treatment of classic microtia are known. Beside a prosthesis, the most common way of auricle reconstruction is the use of autogenous rib cartilage; a process that requires two to three operations. In the first operation, rib cartilage is harvested from the 6th to the 9th rib. The base of the framework is the 6th and 7th rib cartilage which is taken under preservation of the synchondrosis. To mimic a 3-dimensional structure, the triangular fossa and scapha are carved into the groundplate and the 8th rib is fixed as a helical rim. After optimising the framework, it is placed

Microtia is a congenital disorder that manifests as a malformation of the external ear leading to psychosocial problems in affected children. Here, we present a tissue-engineered treatment approach based on a bioprinted autologous auricular cartilage construct (EarCartilage) combined with a bioengineered human pigmented and prevascularized dermo-epidermal skin substitute (EarSkin) tested in immunocompromised rats. We confirmed that human-engineered blood capillaries of EarSkin connected to the recipient's vasculature within 1 week, enabling rapid blood perfusion and epidermal maturation. Bioen

Biofabrication of a complex structure such as ear pinna is not precise with currently available techniques. Auricular deformities (e.g. microtia) can cause physical, social as well as psychological impacts on a patient's wellbeing. Currently available surgical techniques and transplantation methods have many limitations that can be overcome with the help of 3D bioprinting technology. Printable bioink enriched with cartilage-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis was done by digesting goat ear pinna cartilage and polymerized by adding polyvinyl alcohol and gelatine. Rheological analysis

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the current progress of laser-assisted cartilage reshaping (LACR) for prominent ear.
METHODS: The domestic and abroad article concerning the LACR in treatment of prominent ear was reviewed and analyzed.
RESULTS: As a new technique, there were three types of LACR therapies that been used for prominent ear. LACR with the 1 064 nm Nd/YAG laser is painful and the penetration depth of the 1 064 nm Nd/YAG laser is greater than that of the 1540 nm Er/Glass laser which is caused more tissue injury. LACR with the 1 540 nm Er/Glass laser has high absorption by the ear cartilage
