BACKGROUND: Although cases of multiple primary malignant neoplasms are increasing, reports of more than three or four primary metachronous malignant neoplasms are extremely rare. Moreover, very few publications have provided a genetic mutational analysis or have evaluated risk factors associated with such neoplasms. We present an extremely rare case of nine primary malignant lesions in a man who was successfully treated. We also report on microsatellite stability status, analyze risk factors, and discuss the relevant literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: Between 67 and 73 years of age, a male patien

Adenomatous neuroendocrine tumors of the middle ear (MEANTs) are very rare neoplasms which are composed of both epithelial and neuroendocrine components. They have mostly bland histology and indolent biological behavior, yet they may recur and metastasize. Here we present a case of MEANT with ipsilateral local brain, bone and nerve invasion and bilateral cervical lymphadenopathy in a 48 years old male with history of recurrent chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma. The patient underwent an initial fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of an enlarged cervical lymph node followed by surgical exc

Multiple primary malignant neoplasm (MPMN) is a rare disease with two or more malignant neoplasms in one patient. In less than 0.1% of cancer patients, four or more occur. MPMN is frequently associated with hereditary cancer syndrome, although in rare cases, it is not. A female patient developed 17 MPMNs. Although they were successfully treated with surgery, radiation, and adjuvant chemotherapy, the patient died from the recurrence of ovarian cancer. To explore genetic susceptibility to MPMN, immunohistochemical analysis, microsatellite instability analysis, germ line exome sequencing, and uns

The transanal eversion and prolapsing technique is a well-established procedure, and can ensure an adequate distal margin for patients with low rectal neoplasms. Potential leakage risks, however, are associated with bilateral dog ear formation, which results from traditional double-stapling anastomosis. The authors determined the feasibility of combining these techniques with a commercial stapling set to achieve a nondog ear (end-to-end) anastomosis for patients with mid- and distal rectal neoplasms. Patients with early-stage (c/ycT1-2N0), mid- to distal rectal neoplasms and good anal sphincte

Tantamount to the management of temporal bone neoplasms is the ability to visualize the pathology and its relationship with the numerous critical structures housed therein. Transcanal endoscopic ear surgery provides the surgeon with an unparalleled view of the entire middle ear. This article presents the latest information on the usefulness of transcanal endoscopic ear surgery in the management of middle ear and temporal bone neoplasms.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumors of the head and neck region may present problems in diagnosis. Middle ear carcinoid is a rare, recently recognized tumor, which to date has not been reported to metastasize.
METHODS: We report the case of a 64-year-old man with a 9-year history of recurrent middle ear neoplasm and ipsilateral cervical lymphadenopathy. A microscopic parathyroid tumor was also identified. The approach to the diagnosis of this unusual combination is presented.
RESULTS: The patient had a neuroendocrine tumor metastatic to multiple unilateral cervical lymph nodes, which was morph

Middle ear adenomatous neuroendocrine tumors (MEANT) are rare, mainly benign neoplasms and account for less than 2% of the middle and inner ear neoplasms. There are no specific radiological or clinical findings; therefore, the diagnosis is often difficult. Biopsy prior to surgery is often proposed. The definite treatment is the complete surgical resection. We present an uncommon clinical report of a MEANT, which was treated successfully with surgical excision.

Magnetic resonance contrast imaging using gadolinium-DTPA and performing new high resolution sequences (Fast Spin-Echo, Spoiled Gradient-Echo) or angiographic sequences (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) allows an excellent visualization of the inner ear and the cerebellopontine angle to be obtained. Furthermore, using sequences obtained with the "steady-state" technique (Gradient Recalled At Steady-State-GRASS, Constructive Interference at Steady-State-CISS), a good analysis of the structures of the membranous labyrinth can be achieved. Based on these diagnostic techniques, we have studied the

Ear pain is a diagnostic problem when examination of the ear shows no pathology. Referred otalgia may be caused by neoplasms; dental abnormalities or infections; temporomandibular joint dysfunction; sinus, pharyngeal or salivary gland infections; temporal arteritis; cervical arthritis, or one of the neuralgias. Ear pain may also be psychogenic.

Middle ear neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are uncommon neoplasms that exhibit both epithelial and neuroendocrine differentiation. Aberrant desmin expression in middle ear NET has not been documented previously and may create a diagnostic pitfall due to morphologic overlap with myogenic and rhabdoid tumors. A 52-year-old man presented with right ear pain, fullness, and facial deviation. Imaging revealed a soft-tissue mass involving the middle ear cavity and the mastoid air cells, with ossicular erosion. Histopathology showed an infiltrative neoplasm arranged in nests, trabeculae, cords, and pseud

Ceruminous gland tumor is the most common tumor of the ear canal in cats. Otoscopic examination of the ear tumor is so difficult due to narrowing of the external ear canal. The present study aimed to investigate clinical, ultrasonographic and histopathological characteristics of feline ceruminous gland neoplasm in cats. Ten cats with unilateral ear canal swelling were subjected to thorough physical and clinical investigations. Ultrasound of the ear canal and parotid gland was performed using 8.00 MHz linear probe. Tissue specimens were collected after surgical excision (total ear canal ablatio

Adenomatous tumors are an uncommon cause of a middle ear mass. Clinical findings may be nonspecific, leading to difficulties in differentiation from other middle ear tumors. Controversy also exists whether to classify middle ear adenoma and carcinoid as separate neoplasms, or alternatively within a spectrum of the same pathologic entity. Most adenomatous middle ear tumors are indolent in behavior, with a benign histologic appearance and slowly progressive growth. The mainstay of treatment is complete surgical resection, which affords the greatest likelihood of cure.

Primary middle ear neoplasms are rare, and commonly cause conductive hearing loss. When aural masses result in sensorineural hearing loss, malignant etiologies are often suspected. Fibroepithelial polyps are benign lesions commonly found in the skin and genitourinary tract and are not commonly identified as primary lesions of the middle ear. Here, we present a case of a benign fibroepithelial polyp of the middle ear causing sensorineural hearing loss and describe its surgical management. Imaging and histologic characteristics are reviewed.

The rather low incidence of auricular neoplasms irrespective of localization is likely to cause confusion of diagnosis with the more frequent benign ear pathology. Because of this, the elapsed time until confirmation of the diagnosis facilitates the evolution of the disease to the detriment of the patient's health. The diagnosis of an ear neoplasm can hide under the ordinary appearance of external otitis, chronic otorrhea or episodes of various types of ear pain. Evolution of such a malignant pathology is quite rapid and highly aggressive locoregional complications are the subject of discussio

Osteomas of the middle ear are rare benign neoplasms. Most of the cases caused conductive hearing loss and others were asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally. We report a case of a huge middle ear osteoma along with compatible radiological findings filling the whole tympanum and the Eustachian tube, which caused intermittent otorrhea and conductive hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas in the central nervous system account for 0.6% of all head and neck neoplasms, with glomus tympanicum being the most common middle ear tumor. Carcinoid tumors are neuroendocrine tumors, representing less than 1% of neuroendocrine neoplasms in the middle ear. Misdiagnoses have been reported in the literature regarding glomus and carcinoid tumors, however, none have been in the central nervous system or middle ear.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 70-year-old female with a history of left temporal lobe tumor underwent unsuccessful resection due to intraoperative bleeding at an out

Adenomatous neoplasm occurring in the middle ear is rare. The clinical findings are non-specific and include otological symptoms as well as sometimes functional deficits of the lower cranial nerves. The final diagnosis will be made only after elaborate histological examinations because of the inconsistent radiological and clinical findings. DNA analysis yields some information on the prognosis of this tumour. We report on a case where a primary adenomatous neoplasm developed in the middle ear, and discuss our concept of therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic otitis media is a significant health problem, but middle ear and mastoid neoplasms, either benign or malignant, are extremely rare.
CASE REPORT: Here is a report from a 51-year-old female who presented persistent otorrhea with an aural polyp. The patient was operated on with the probable diagnosis of cholesteatoma. During surgery, a fragile mass was discovered, and histopathologic examination reported the diagnosis of a primary oncocytic Schneiderian papilloma. Microscopically it has pseudostratified epithelium of columnar cell epithelium with eosinophilic granular cytop

Nearly 30 million Americans have hearing loss. Audiograms are used to determine if hearing loss is sensorineural (SNHL), conductive (CHL), or mixed (MHL). SNHL indicates dysfunction of the cochlea, cochlear nerve, or brain. The study of choice for adults with SNHL is gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging, which is used to look for acoustic neuromas, abnormal labyrinth signal intensity or enhancement, and brain disease. In children with SNHL, computed tomography (CT) performed with bone algorithms demonstrates inner ear dysplasias. SNHL from trauma is best evaluated with CT studies. CH

Osteomas of the middle ear are rare benign neoplasms. To date, only a few cases have been reported. Osteomas of the middle ear are small, single, usually unilateral, peduncular growths, off-white in color, with a smooth or multilobular surface, asymptomatic or causing functional disorders. The most common symptom is conductive hearing loss because of impingement of the ossicular chain. Some cases are asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally. We present two cases of incidentally detected middle ear osteoma. Based on a review of the main articles in the literature and analysis of two cases ma
