Early detection of oral cancer: dentists' opinions and practices before and after educational interventions in Northern-Germany.

INTRODUCTION: The question whether educational programmes improve dentists' knowledge of oral cancer is still an unexplored subject. The aim of this study was to assess dentists' opinions and practices concerning oral cancer using a standardised survey after educational intervention over one year. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Following a baseline survey which was mailed to every dentist in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany (n = 2280), the results were analysed to produce a multifaceted educational programme. After educational intervention, the same survey was redistributed and the results before and after

Study protocol, increasing awareness and early detection in students at risk of gynaecological cancer: feasibility of an online educational and behaviour change intervention.

BACKGROUND: Around 2500 teenagers and young adults (TYA) in the UK are diagnosed with cancer each year, many with melanomas or carcinomas. Almost a third are diagnosed via A&E, highlighting the need for earlier detection. Although university students recognise common cancer symptoms, they often miss less obvious ones (e.g. constipation, frequent urination, bloating) and may delay seeking help. Early exposure to cancer information during key life stages, such as university can promote lifelong body awareness and earlier help-seeking. We have created an online behaviour-change intervention for u

Early physical training and psycho-educational intervention for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. The SheppHeart randomized 2 × 2 factorial clinical pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery often experience a range of problems and symptoms such as immobility, pain and insufficient sleep. Results from trials investigating testing in-hospital physical exercise or psychological intervention have been promising. However, no randomized clinical trials have tested a comprehensive rehabilitation programme consisting of both physical exercise and psycho-education in the early rehabilitation phase. AIMS: The aims of the present SheppHeart pilot randomized clinical trial were to evaluate the feasibility of patient recrui

Educators' Book Selection in Shared Book Reading: A Case From an Early Intervention Centre for Children With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Language development in individuals with Down syndrome (DS) is often delayed, requiring targeted interventions. Shared Book Reading (SBR), an evidence-based approach, supports language and pre-literacy skills through interactive reading. For children with DS, selecting suitable books is vital due to their unique intellectual and linguistic profiles. METHOD: This study examined books used by educators during SBR with young children with DS and factors influencing selection. Using a mixed-methods design, data from 13 educators at a Malaysian early intervention centre were gathered t

Early intervention and special education in New York City: Patterns of service use and disparities affecting children of colour.

BACKGROUND: Compliance with the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in the United States is monitored through review of cross-sectional reports from three discrete, age-defined programmes (early intervention [EI], early childhood special education [ECSE)] and school-age special education [SE]) to promote the timely, efficient and effective delivery of appropriate services to all eligible children. Analysis of longitudinal data is required to discern how children use services across programmes to provide the necessary context for IDEA oversight and to identify

The effect of system-level intervention in early childhood education and care on children's dietary intake and environmental impact of the diet.

PURPOSE: Food systems have a large impact on human health and environmental sustainability. Early childhood education and care is an ideal setting for systemic change. We performed a cluster-randomised trial aiming at climate-friendly and healthy sustainable diet at 23 daycare centres in four Finnish municipalities in 2022 and evaluated system-level intervention effects on food consumption and nutrient intake, and climate and biodiversity impacts of the diet. METHODS: The intervention was initially designed by the research group and refined through co-creation workshops with food service and

Reducing Early Readmissions After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Through Smartphone-Delivered Video-Based Discharge Education.

BACKGROUND: Over 900,000 percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) are performed annually in the United States; however, gaps in discharge education persist. Inadequate teaching contributes to early readmissions, with up to 19% of readmissions occurring within 30 days. Video-based education has been associated with improved comprehension, but its role in PCI discharge teaching has not been established. OBJECTIVE: The investigators evaluated whether leveraging smartphone technology to deliver video-based discharge education alongside standard post-PCI instructions reduced hospital readmissions

Skin self-examination education for early detection of melanoma: a randomized controlled trial of Internet, workbook, and in-person interventions.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of melanoma improves survival. Since many melanoma patients and their spouses seek the care of a physician after discovering their melanoma, an ongoing study will determine the efficacy of teaching at-risk melanoma patients and their skin check partner how to conduct skin self-examinations (SSEs). Internet-based health behavior interventions have proven efficacious in creating behavior change in patients to better prevent, detect, or cope with their health issues. The efficacy of electronic interactive SSE educational intervention provided on a tablet device has not

"It Changed My Perspective": Embedding Occupational Therapy Within an Early Childhood Education Centre Provides Inclusive Developmental Support and Access to Early Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention (EI) provides critical support to young children with developmental delays, aiming to optimize their development and learning readiness. However, studies have shown that 74% of eligible children never receive a referral for EI services. This pilot study explored the impact of the Occupational Therapy Embedded in Early Childhood (OTEEC) Partnership Model, where providers support all children enrolled at a childcare centre, on young children's access to developmental support in the context of early childhood education. METHODS: We used a case study approach to exp

Bridging the policy-practice gap: A call for urgent early intervention and early education South African policy reform for children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

In the global context, South Africa demonstrates higher disabling-hearing-loss prevalence rates than high-income countries because of its contextual challenges such as high burden of disease and audiology service access inequity. While high-income countries demonstrate integrated Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programmes with mandated support, South Africa faces distinctive challenges in translating its early intervention policy precepts into actionable support systems, with fragmentation across health, social development, and education sectors for children who are deaf or har

Early educational and behavioral RCT interventions to reduce maternal symptoms of psychological trauma following preterm birth: a systematic review.

Early behavioral and educational interventions have been developed to reduce maternal symptoms of psychological trauma (depression, anxiety, parenting stress, acute stress disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder) following preterm birth (PTB). Aims of this systematic review were to critically assess study methodology and provide a synthesis of existing randomized control trial (RCT) interventions and to estimate effects of the interventions in reducing the maternal symptoms across studies. Four electronic databases were systematically searched to locate relevant RCTs using preestablished e

Combined nutrition and physical activity education for early adolescents with malnutrition: A systematic review of overweight interventions and the undernutrition evidence gap.

Early adolescence represents a pivotal stage of growth and development, characterized by profound changes in dietary patterns and physical activity behaviors. Yet, despite the well-documented consequences of both undernutrition and overnutrition, this age group remains largely overlooked in low- and middle-income country settings where the double burden of malnutrition is rapidly intensifying. The primary objective of this systematic review is to determine the effect of combined physical activity and nutrition education interventions among early adolescents experiencing either underweight or o

Effectiveness of an educational intervention in improving healthcare workers' knowledge of early recognition, diagnosis and management of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in rural far-western Nepal: a pre/post-intervention study.

OBJECTIVES: Rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remain among the major heart problems among children in Nepal. Although these conditions are preventable and treatable, the lack of proper knowledge and resources to diagnose and manage these conditions in rural health centres is a key concern. This study assessed the impact of educational sessions to improve the knowledge of healthcare workers in the early recognition, diagnosis, and management of RF and RHD in rural far-western Nepal. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: This study used a pretest and post-test interventional de
