Disordered eating and eating disorders in aquatic sports.

Disordered eating behavior (DE) and eating disorders (EDs) are of great concern because of their associations with physical and mental health risks and, in the case of athletes, impaired performance. The syndrome originally known as the Female Athlete Triad, which focused on the interaction of energy availability, reproductive function, and bone health in female athletes, has recently been expanded to recognize that Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) has a broader range of negative effects on body systems with functional impairments in both male and female athletes. Athletes in leanne

Binge eating behavior in patients with eating disorders.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the objectively observed binge eating behavior of obese subjects meeting the proposed DSM-IV criteria for binge eating disorder would be similar to that observed in patients with bulimia nervosa. Non-obese patients with bulimia nervosa (BN), obese subjects with binge eating disorder (BED), obese and non-obese women without eating disorders were each instructed to binge eat single- and multiple-item meals. In the multiple-item meal, the obese subjects with BED ate significantly more (1515 kcal) than obese subjects without BED (1115 kcal), but t

Eating behavior in eating disorders: response to preloads.

Eating behavior in eating-disordered subjects was investigated by recording food intake and subjective ratings following three preloads differing in calories, weight and connotation. Subjects were patients with a DSM-IIIR diagnosis of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa and nonpatient volunteers (normal-weight or overweight dieters, and normal-weight nondieters). After all preloads, anorectics ate significantly less than all other subjects except normal-weight dieters, and anorectics rated hunger and desire to eat consistently lower and fullness greater than all other subjects. When analysis o

Early childhood eating behaviors and adolescent eating disorders.

Maladaptive eating patterns were traced longitudinally in a large random sample of children. Pickiness and concern with weight were more common in girls than in boys, and the prevalence of pickiness declined with age. No age or sex differences in family contention around meals nor in bingeing were shown. All problem behaviors showed significant stability over the 10-year span studied, beginning at ages 1 to 10. Certain eating and digestive problems in early childhood were predictive of symptoms of bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa in adolescence. Findings regarding prospective risks implica

Eating disorders: When food "Eats" time.

The presence of a physical or mental health issue, such as an eating disorder (ED), impacts daily activities, also known as occupations. For example, an overinvestment in body shape and weight undoubtedly can lead to an underinvestment in other, more meaningful occupations. To address ED-related perceptual disturbances, a detailed log of daily time use can pinpoint food-related occupational imbalances. This study aims to characterize the daily occupations associated with EDs. The first specific objective (SO.1) is to categorize and quantify the temporal organization of a typical day's occupati

To eat or not to eat: dietary fat in uremia is the question.

Although a diet low in protein is well known to reduce the risk of progression in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the impact of dietary fat content and fat quality has largely been ignored. As a reduced protein intake results in an obligatory reduction in energy intake, and as CKD patients often suffer from energy malnutrition, this issue deserves greater attention. The present review aims to summarize what is currently known about dietary fat intake in CKD and suggests areas for further study. We conclude that although overweight per se is an important risk factor for the developm

Prevalence of eating disorders and eating attacks in narcolepsy.

Narcoleptic patients suffer frequently from obesity and type II diabetes. Most patients show a deficit in the energy balance regulating orexinergic system. Nevertheless, it is not known, why narcoleptic patients tend to be obese. We examined 116 narcoleptic patients and 80 controls with the structured interview for anorectic and bulimic eating disorders (SIAB) to test the hypothesis that typical or atypical eating attacks or eating disorders may be more frequent in narcoleptic patients. No difference in the current prevalence of eating disorders bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, or anore

Core eating disorder fears: Prevalence and differences in eating disorder fears across eating disorder diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: Fear and anxiety are key maintaining factors for eating disorder (ED) pathology. Maladaptive fears lead to ED behaviors and avoidance, which provide temporary relief, but ultimately reinforce the fear and contribute to a cycle that maintains the ED. To date, fears of food and weight gain are the most explored fears underlying ED pathology. However, recently other important ED fears have been identified, including fears of social consequences and personal consequences. METHOD: The current study (N = 229 individuals with an ED) aimed to better characterize ED fears. Specifically, thi

Socially driven eating and restriction in the eating disorders.

The aims of this study were: to develop a measure to examine the relationship between socially driven eating and specific eating behaviours; to examine whether different social situations increase or decrease eating in different diagnostic groups; and to determine whether dimensional links exist between responses to social triggers and different aspects of eating pathology. A clinical group of 107 eating-disordered women and 143 nonclinical women completed a measure of socially driven eating and restriction (the Social Eating Scale, or SES) and the Eating Disorders Inventory. The SES had good

Emotional reactivity and eating in binge eating and obesity.

The present study investigated daily mood fluctuations and moods during eating in normal and overweight binge and nonbinge eaters (N = 56) and moods during binge and nonbinge episodes of individuals who binge eat (N = 29). For 2 weeks, subjects completed the Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist each morning and continuously recorded the mood during eating and the type and quantity of food eaten during each eating episode. The results indicated that bingers experience greater fluctuations of anxiety and depression than nonbingers and overweight individuals experience greater fluctuations in anxi

Clarifying the relationship between intuitive eating, mindful eating, and maladaptive eating: A factor analytic study.

Diverse adaptive and maladaptive eating behaviours exist, yet research is needed to understand their inter-relationships. This study investigated the factor structure underlying a broad spectrum of eating attitudes and behaviours, and their associations with wellbeing outcomes and clinical impairment. Two samples of women (Mage = 24 years; n1 = 400, n2 = 423) completed a survey measuring intuitive eating, mindful eating, disinhibited eating, dietary restraint and restriction, and orthorexia tendencies. Exploratory factor analysis in Sample 1 suggested a five-factor structure, which was support

Night eating patterns of individuals with eating disorders: implications for conceptualizing the night eating syndrome.

The prevalence, correlates, and symptom coherence of night eating syndrome (NES) in individuals seeking inpatient treatment for eating disorders were assessed. Inpatients (n=68; M age=29.8 years; % female=94.1; % diagnosed with anorexia nervosa [AN]=47.1; % diagnosed with bulimia nervosa [BN]=47.1) were interviewed with the Night Eating Syndrome History and Inventory. Additionally, medical charts were reviewed and participants completed measures of eating behavior and quality of life. NES was diagnosed in 25% of patients; significantly more patients diagnosed with BN meet criteria for NES comp

[Eating disorders].

Eating disorders (EDs) are very frequent and are increasing since the Covid-19 pandemic. They include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidance and restriction disorders and their subsyndromic forms. EDs affect people of all ages, they generate somatic, psychiatric and social complications. Early diagnosis and appropriate care can considerably improve the prognosis. Unfortunately, these disorders steel underdiagnosed and the specialized care pathway available are not well known. After describing eating disorders, the article outlines elements for identification and in

[Eating disorders].

Anorexia and bulimia are part of eating disorders which are defined in the diagnostic and statistical manual as mental health disorders. Screening tools exist and there are different types of treatment which are generally multi-disciplinary. The nurse, as well as the family or immediate circle, are essential players in the care. Specialist units and the development of research are improving the understanding, treatment and support of these complex disorders.

Eating disorders.

Twenty years have passed from the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) and, in the meanwhile, a lot of research data about eating disorders has been published. This article reviews the main modifications to the classification of eating disorders reported in the "Feeding and Eating Disorders" chapter of the DSM-5, and compares them with the ICD-10 diagnostic guidelines. Particularly, we will show that DSM-5 criteria widened the diagnoses of anorexia and bulimia nervosa to less severe

Eating disorders.

Eating disorders are an important cause of physical and psychosocial morbidity in adolescent girls and young adult women. They are much less frequent in men. Eating disorders are divided into three diagnostic categories: anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and the atypical eating disorders. However, the disorders have many features in common and patients frequently move between them, so for the purposes of this Seminar we have adopted a transdiagnostic perspective. The cause of eating disorders is complex and badly understood. There is a genetic predisposition, and certain specific environmenta
