Systematics, distribution and ecology of sea stars (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) from Iranian waters of the Persian Gulf and a revised identification key.

Sea stars are common seashore animals in many regions. Field surveys along the mainland coast and at 12 islands in the northern and eastern Persian Gulf were undertaken from 2017 to 2022. Intertidal surveys were based on qualitative sampling, while subtidal sampling (to 25 m depth) involved scuba diving and use of a Peterson grab. From the collections, 9 sea star species were identified. Morphological and ecological notes are provided for the observed species. An identification key, and checklist of all Asteroidea reported from the Persian Gulf (26 species), are also provided.

Effects of hydrographic barriers on population genetic structure of the sea star Coscinasterias muricata (Echinodermata, Asteroidea) in the New Zealand fiords.

New Zealand's 14 deep-water fiords possess persistent salinity stratification and mean estuarine circulation that may serve to isolate populations of marine organisms that have a dispersal larval phase. In order to investigate this idea, we analysed the population structure of the sea star Coscinasterias muricata using a mitochondrial DNA marker. Genetic differentiation among populations of C. muricata was analysed using 366 base pairs of mtDNA D-loop. We compared populations from the fiords with several others sampled from around New Zealand. At a macro-geographical scale (> 1000 km), restric

Unusually well-preserved fossil material dates the extant brittle star genus Actinozonella (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea) to at least the Late Cretaceous.

Recent advances in molecular phylogenies have revolutionised our understanding of brittle star systematics and evolutionary history. Although genetic data have provided new grounds for age estimates of phylogenetic divergences, direct fossil evidence is currently the only robust means to determine the minimum age of clades. The present study discusses an exceptional opportunity to robustly pinpoint the minimum age of an extant genus of brittle star. The presumed ophiolepidid brittle star species Ophiolepis? falsa Jagt & Kutscher, in Jagt, 2000, from lower upper Campanian (Upper Cretaceous, c.

Primordial Germ Cells of Synaptula hydriformis (Holothuroidea; Echinodermata) Are Epithelial Flagellated-Collar Cells: Their Apical-Basal Polarity Becomes Primary Egg Polarity.

The primordial germ cells (PGCs) of a recently metamorphosed juvenile Synaptula hydriformis occur with somatic cells in the germinal epithelium of the gonad. As part of the epithelium, PGCs rest on a basal lamina, extend apically towards a lumen, are joined to other cells of the epithelium via apicolateral junctions, and express apical-basal polarity. Each PGC has an apical flagellum that is surrounded by a collar of microvilli. The apicolateral junctions of PGCs consist of apical adhering and subapical septate junctions. Hemidesmosomes attach the PGCs to the basal lamina. Although the somatic

The Effect of Photobiomodulation on the Sea Urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Echinodermata) Using Higher-Fluence on Fertilization, Embryogenesis, and Larval Development: An In Vitro Study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the photobiomodulation (PBM) effect of the 808 nm diode laser irradiation on spermatozoa, eggs, fertilized eggs, embryos, and larvae of Paracentrotus lividus, using two different power settings. BACKGROUND DATA: Studies have shown the possible use of PBM in artificial insemination. These have shown the potential effect of low-power laser irradiation on spermatozoa, while there are few studies on the effect of laser photonic energy on oocytes and almost no reports on the influence of lasers in embryogenesis. METHODS: P. lividus gametes, zygo

NADPH-, NADH- and cumene hydroperoxide-dependent metabolism of benzo[a]pyrene by pyloric caeca microsomes of the sea star Asterias rubens L. (Echinodermata: Asteroidea).

1. Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) metabolism was studied in microsomes of the pyloric caeca (main digestive tissue and site of P450) of the echinoderm sea star (starfish) Asterias rubens. 2. NADPH-dependent metabolism of BaP produced phenols (36% of total metabolism), quinones (19%), dihydrodiols (25%) and putative protein adducts (20%). 3. NADH-dependent rates of BaP metabolism were approximately twice those found for NADPH-dependent metabolism, and metabolite formation was shifted towards dihydrodiols and quinones. 4. Cumene hydroperoxide (CHP)-dependent rates of BaP metabolism were also higher than N

Three new species and one new record of Deimatidae (Echinodermata, Holothuroidea, Synallactida) discovered in the South China Sea and the Mariana fore-arc area using integrative taxonomic methods.

Deep-sea holothurian specimens were collected during five scientific expeditions (2018-2023) using the submersible vehicle 'Shenhaiyongshi'. Our examination of specimens of Deimatidae from the South China Sea and the Mariana fore-arc area revealed three new species, which were described as Oneirophantaidsseicasp. nov., Oneirophantabrunneannulatasp. nov., and Oneirophantalucernasp. nov. These species were distinguished from each other and from congeners by the arrangement, and number of ventrolateral tube feet and ossicle types. We also reported Oneirophantamutabilismutabilis Théel, 1879 for th

In vitro study of magnesium-calcite biomineralization in the skeletal materials of the seastar Pisaster giganteus.

The mechanisms of formation of biogenic magnesium-rich calcite remain an enigma. Here we present ultrastructural and compositional details of ossicles from the seastar Pisaster giganteus (Echinodermata, Asteroidea). Powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and elemental analyses confirm that the ossicles are composed of magnesium-rich calcite, whilst also containing about 0.01 % (w/w) of soluble organic matrix (SOM) as an intracrystalline component. Amino acid analysis and N-terminal sequencing revealed that this mixture of intracrystalline macromolecules consists predominantly of glyci

[A comparative study of the biogenic amine receptors in the muscle tissue of mollusks, echinoderms and tunicates].

Smooth muscles of Mollusca, Echinodermata and Tunicata contain one class of adrenoreceptors with the dissociation constant and maximal specific binding 2.5 and 82 in Anodonta, 2.3 and 320 in Holothuria, 4.9 pM and 232.5 fmol/mg of protein in ascidia. Catecholamines and their antagonists can be ranged in the row as follows: isoproterenol greater than adrenalin greater than propranolol-noradrenaline greater than phentolamine. Negative regulation of the beta-adrenoreceptor affinity to isoproterenol by means of guanine nucleotides (GN) was shown. The muscular tissues of Mollusca, Echinodermata and

The genome sequence of the Goose Foot Starfish, Anseropoda placenta (Pennant, 1777) (Valvatida: Asterinidae).

We present a genome assembly from an individual Anseropoda placenta (Goose Foot Starfish; Echinodermata; Asteroidea; Valvatida; Asterinidae). The assembly contains two haplotypes with total lengths of 533.27 megabases and 454.27 megabases. Most of haplotype 1 (70.67%) is scaffolded into 22 chromosomal pseudomolecules. Haplotype 2 was assembled to scaffold level. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 16.42 kilobases. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produces reference genomes for eukaryotic species found in Britain and Ir

Rainbow bodies: Revisiting the diversity of coelomocyte aggregates and their synthesis in echinoderms.

The innate immunity of echinoderms has been a research focus since the early twentieth century, consistently providing ever deeper knowledge of its complexity and evolutionary aspects. At its core are coelomocytes, which are diverse cells collectively known to respond in a variety of ways, including via movement, phagocytosis, and aggregation. However, features of cellular immunity have never been compared in echinoderms from phylogenetic and distributional perspectives, to provide insight into ecological and evolutionary patterns. The present study catalyzed and characterized the formation of

Axial complex of Crinoidea: Comparison with other Ambulacraria.

The anatomy of Crinoidea differs from that of the other modern echinoderms. In order to see, whether such differences extend to the axial complex as well, we studied the axial complex of Himerometra robustipinna (Himerometridae, Comatulida) and compared it with modern Eleutherozoa. The axial coelom is represented by narrow spaces lined with squamous coelothelium, and surrounds the extracellular haemocoelic lacunae of the axial organ. The latter is located, for the most part, along the central oral-aboral axis of the body. The axial organ can be divided into the lacunar and tubular region. The

Ontogenetic dynamics of the subepidermal spicule complex in Nudibranchia (Gastropoda): the case of Onchidoris muricata.

Spicules are mineral-based biocomposites skeletal structures that are widely distributed among phylogenetically distant groups of invertebrates (Porifera, Cnidaria, Mollusca, Echinodermata). Subepidermal spicules are formed under the ectodermal epithelium and are characterized for all groups except mollusks (Aplacophora, Polyplacophora, Bivalvia), their spicules are located on the surface of the body. However, one group of mollusks (Gastropoda: Heterobranchia) have unique subepidermal spicules that have never been detected above the ectodermal epithelium and similarly to those characterized fo

Crinoid biology and ecology.

Crinoids (Class Crinoidea) are the oldest extant echinoderm lineage and possess one of the most complete fossil records of any marine animal group, spanning almost half a billion years. Although they dominated many Paleozoic benthic ecosystems, only approximately 731 species survive today, occupying habitats from shallow reefs to the deepest ocean trenches. This chapter provides a comprehensive synthesis of current knowledge on crinoid biology and ecology, integrating evidence from modern and fossil taxa to examine the evolutionary processes that have shaped their remarkable persistence and di

Microscopic overview of crinoid regeneration.

Crinoids are well known for their striking regenerative potential and can rapidly and completely regenerate arms lost following self-induced or traumatic amputation. Thus they provide a valuable experimental model for investigation of the regenerative process from the macroscopic to the molecular level. In these last years we have studied in detail the overall process of arm regeneration in the comatulid Antedon mediterranea. This phenomenon can be described on the whole as a typical blastemal regeneration in which new structures develop from migratory pluripotential, actively proliferating ce

Marine Antimicrobial Peptides: An Emerging Nightmare to the Life-Threatening Pathogens.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens due to improper usage of conventional antibiotics has created a global health crisis. Alternatives to antibiotics being an urgent need, the scientific community is forced to search for new antimicrobials. This exploration has led to the discovery of antimicrobial peptides, a group of small peptides occurring in different phyla such as Porifera, Cnidaria, Annelida, Arthropoda, Mollusca, Echinodermata, and Chordata, as a component of their innate immune system. The marine environment, possessing immense diversity of organisms, is undoubtedly one of

Echinoderm radial glia in adult cell renewal, indeterminate growth, and regeneration.

Echinoderms are a phylum of marine deterostomes with a range of interesting biological features. One remarkable ability is their impressive capacity to regenerate most of their adult tissues, including the central nervous system (CNS). The research community has accumulated data that demonstrates that, in spite of the pentaradial adult body plan, echinoderms share deep similarities with their bilateral sister taxa such as hemichordates and chordates. Some of the new data reveal the complexity of the nervous system in echinoderms. In terms of the cellular architecture, one of the traits that is
