Standard transthoracic ultrasound examination of the heart has provided increasingly better images since it was clinically introduced approximately 25 years ago. Although two-dimensional echocardiography is an established tool in clinical cardiology, the image qualities of conventional transthoracic approaches are sometimes unsatisfactory for various reasons, such as obesity, chronic obstructive lung disease, and changes with age in the chest wall. In these patients, transesophageal echocardiography can provide important diagnostic information because chest wall interference and intrathoracic

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to compare intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) probe via the esophageal route (TE-ICE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance for the LAAO procedure.
BACKGROUND: Intraprocedural imaging guidance is recommended for all LAAO procedures. Currently, both femoral-ICE-guided and TEE-guided LAAO demonstrated similar outcomes. TE-ICE may serve as a potential alternative imaging modality in LAAO. This approach avoids general anesthesia and its potential complications, while maintaining a favorable learning curve, as it is highly similar to standard transesoph

Appropriateness criteria for echocardiography were recently published and classify potential procedural indications as appropriate (scores of 7 to 9), uncertain (scores of 4 to 6), or inappropriate (scores of 1 to 3). The rate of the appropriate utilization of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in clinical practice is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the appropriate utilization rate of TEE in a large consecutive patient series. A retrospective review of consecutive patients referred for TEE within Saint Luke's Health System (Kansas City, Missouri) was performed. The clinical

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a semi-invasive monitoring technique increasingly used in cardiac surgery and in major noncardiac surgery for patients with known or supposed cardiac or coronary problems. During lung transplantation (LTx), the close interrelation between heart and lung function makes TEE an invaluable tool for instantly monitoring the physiopathological situation in the subsequent steps of the intervention. In patients scheduled for LTx, induction of anesthesia could be a dangerous moment with the possibility of cardiogenic shock if pulmonary hypertension (PH) exists;

With transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), a new echocardiographic window is obtained which enables cardiologists to explore the heart from the esophagus and stomach. However, the procedure, when first undertaken, may present certain difficulties for the cardiologist in interpreting the anatomical findings and approaching a diagnosis. We thus convey our first experiences and results of TEE in 107 pediatric patients. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was performed in 107 pediatric patients at our institution between December 1998-February 2001, using the standard techniques and following

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a widely used cardiac imaging technique that provides the clinician with a view of the heart as seen from the esophagus or stomach. Rapid advances in TEE transducer technology, coupled with the low-risk, semi-invasive nature of the procedure, have fueled its use for cardiac monitoring of surgical and critical care patients, in addition to diagnostic imaging. Many recent research studies have demonstrated the utility of TEE for direct, real-time evaluation of global and regional left ventricular function not achievable with current competing technologie

Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) is increasingly used in cardiology, cardiac surgery and intensive care. Its complications are rare. We report a case of perforation of the oesophagus after TOE in a 71-year-old woman, scheduled for an elective aortic valve replacement. Her medical history included arterial hypertension but no pre-existing oesophageal disease. A Hewlett Packard ultrasound imaging system was used, with a 5 MHz single plane probe. After local anaesthesia, the transducer probe was inserted into the distal oesophagus, after three attempts, without any apparent incident. A few

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a new semi-invasive diagnostic tool in cardiology. We studied tolerance of TEE. 95 out of 121 consecutive patients were interviewed using a detailed, structured questionnaire (42 questions). Most patients (97%) received midazolam prior to TEE. TEE was tolerated well by 89% (n = 84) of the patients. Patients receiving a higher dose of midazolam (> 0.04 mg/kg bodyweight) tolerated TEE better than those in the lower-dose group (p < 0.0005), but they experienced side effects more often (p < 0.05) and did not tolerate fatigue as well (p < 0.0005). TEE was t

Although transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography has been a procedure of choice for diagnosing cardiac mass lesions, the advent of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) provided better visualization of cardiac structures, especially those at a considerable depth from the chest wall, and lesions that involve the left atrial appendage. In this study, we examined the experience at our institution with TEE imaging of cardiac mass lesions (excluding valvular vegetations) from April 1988 to July 1990. TEE studies detected 83 lesions (in 80 patients), which we characterized by type and site:

The assessment of congenital aortopulmonary communications by transthoracic echocardiography may be suboptimal, particularly postoperatively, due to limited acoustic windows. We performed intraoperative transesophageal echocardiograms in six patients with eight proven systemic-pulmonary communications. Diagnosis included truncus arteriosus (1), aortopulmonary window (1), Waterston anastomosis (3), central Gore-Tex shunt (1), and modified left Blalock-Taussig shunt (2). All communications were accurately demonstrated by transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). The transesophageal technique also

Biplane transesophageal echocardiography (BTEE) was intraoperatively performed on 27 patients; ten patients with coronary artery bypass graft surgery, ten with aortic valve replacement, five with mitral valve replacement, one with reconstruction of complete AV-canal, and one with surgical repair of dissecting aortic aneurysm. Compared with the transverse views of the monoplane TEE, BTEE permits the following additional images of the heart: 1) Longitudinal "two-chamber-view" for assessment of left ventricular (LV) anterior, apical, and posterior wall motion, and for assessment of mitral valve a

Transoesophageal echocardiography is one of the major technological advances over the last ten years; it allows imaging of unequalled quality for two main reasons: the proximity of the structures studied without interposition of pulmonary or parietal structures and the high resolution of the transducers used. Aortic dissection is the first main indication: the presence of an intimal flap confirms the diagnosis with a sensitivity and specificity of approximately 95% and 99%. This examination should be performed immediately whenever this diagnosis is suspected. Increasingly, the surgeon acts exc

Transesophageal echocardiography is a new diagnostic method for visualization of retrocardial structures and heart valves with high resolution. This retrospective analysis describes the use of and the findings by transesophageal echocardiography in patients suspected to suffer from endocarditis studied in three hospitals. 50 patients were studied; the diagnosis was confirmed in 64%, whereas 36% (controls) had other findings. The leading initial symptoms were fever and valvular incompetence. Laboratory parameters were altered in both groups with equal frequency. One or more diagnostic features

The risk of endocarditis associated with transesophageal echocardiography was studied in 101 patients. To evaluate possible bacteremia, blood cultures were performed on samples from consecutive patients who did not have clinical or laboratory evidence of infection. The broth blood culture Signal system was used in all patients, and additionally, the lysis-centrifugation technique was performed in a subgroup of 40 patients to further ameliorate recovery of rapidly phagocytosed germs. Comprehensive criteria for differentiation between true bacteremia and possible contamination were provided by m
