Echolocating animals actively emit pulses of ultrasound and perceive acoustic reflections to determine the position of objects in dark, often three-dimensional spaces. Echolocation specificity thus depends on the properties of the calls emitted, such as frequency, duration, and call "shape", and how this ultrasound is modulated, reflected, received, and interpreted. Currently, however, there is no coherent synthesis explaining the functional adaptation of ultrasonic call design across echolocating species. To address this, here we provide the first comprehensive global macroevolutionary analys

Exposure to intense noise can damage cochlear hair cells, leading to hearing loss in mammals. To avoid this constraint, most mammals have evolved in relatively quiet environments. Echolocating bats, however, are naturally exposed to continuous intense sounds from their own and neighboring sonar emissions for maintaining sonar directionality and range. Here, we propose the presence of intense noise resistance in cochlear hair cells of echolocating bats against noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). To test this hypothesis, we performed noise exposure experiments for laboratory mice, one nonecholoca

Odontocetes (toothed whales, dolphins and porpoises) hunt and navigate through dark and turbid aquatic environments using echolocation; a key adaptation that relies on the same principles as sonar. Among echolocating vertebrates, odontocetes are unique in producing high-frequency vocalizations at the phonic lips, a constriction in the nasal passages just beneath the blowhole, and then using air sinuses and the melon to modulate their transmission. All extant odontocetes seem to echolocate; however, exactly when and how this complex behaviour--and its underlying anatomy--evolved is largely unkn

We have previously reported that an early-blind echolocating individual (EB) showed robust occipital activation when he identified distant, silent objects based on echoes from his tongue clicks (Thaler, Arnott, & Goodale, 2011). In the present study we investigated the extent to which echolocation activation in EB's occipital cortex reflected general echolocation processing per se versus feature-specific processing. In the first experiment, echolocation audio sessions were captured with in-ear microphones in an anechoic chamber or hallway alcove as EB produced tongue clicks in front of a conca

Acoustic divergence is widely recognized as a key driver of speciation and niche differentiation in vocal animals. In echolocating horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus), the larynx is specialized for producing high-duty-cycle signals used in foraging, navigation, and species recognition. While the ecological role of echolocation is established, the molecular mechanisms regulating laryngeal frequency remain unclear. We compared the laryngeal transcriptomes of three closely related, sympatric Rhinolophus species with distinct resting frequencies (RFs): R. episcopus (~46 kHz), R. siamensis (~66 kHz), and

Key innovations are pivotal for biodiversity and facilitating evolutionary success, enabling organisms' adaptation to various ecological niches through the diversification of phenotypic traits. In mammals, notable adaptations include evolving hypsodonty for grazing on grasses and, for bats, evolving echolocation and wing acquisition. Recent studies have highlighted the overlooked morphological diversity of the bat larynx, a key organ for echolocation capabilities. Tracheal chambers, found on the trachea's first rings, are enigmatic components within the laryngeal complex whose origins and func

Among bats, rhinolophoids and yangochiropterans, but not pteropodids, exhibit laryngeal echolocation. Although Rousettus has been regarded as the only pteropodid capable of echolocation using tongue clicks, recent evidence suggests that other species of pteropodids are also capable of echolocation using wing clicks. Studies on laryngeal echolocators suggest that delicate ear movements are essential for the echolocation behavior of bats and that the cervicoauricularis muscles play a critical role in such ear movements. In this study, we observed the gross anatomy of cervicoauricularis muscles i

Recently diverged taxa with contrasting phenotypes offer opportunities for unravelling the genetic basis of phenotypic variation in nature. Horseshoe bats are a speciose group that exhibit a derived form of high-duty cycle echolocation in which the inner ear is finely tuned to echoes of the narrowband call frequency. Here, by focusing on three recently diverged subspecies of the intermediate horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus affinis) that display divergent echolocation call frequencies, we aim to identify candidate loci putatively involved in hearing frequency variation. We used de novo transcriptome

Although much is known about the echolocation of horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus spp.), little is known about the characteristics and function of their communication calls. This study focused on a stereotyped behavior of a bat approaching a companion animal in the colony, and examined their interaction and vocalization during this behavior. The bats emit echolocation-like vocalizations when approaching each other and these vocalizations contain a "buildup" pulse sequence, in which the frequency of the pulse increases gradually to normal echolocation pulse frequencies. The results suggest that the

Big brown bats were trained in a two-choice task to locate a two-cylinder dipole object with a constant 5 cm spacing in the presence of either a one-cylinder monopole or another two-cylinder dipole with a shorter spacing. For the dipole versus monopole task, the objects were either stationary or in motion during each trial. The dipole and monopole objects varied from trial to trial in the left-right position while also roving in range (10-40 cm), cross range separation (15-40 cm), and dipole aspect angle (0 degrees -90 degrees ). These manipulations prevented any single feature of the acoustic

The approach phase of landing vespertilionid bats ends with a group of calls, which either consists of buzz I alone or buzz I and buzz II. To understand the possible role of buzz II, we trained Myotis myotis to land on a vertical grid, and compared the flight and echolocation behavior during approach in trials with and without buzz II. During the approach, we did not find any differences in the echolocation behavior until the end of buzz I which indicated whether buzz II was emitted or not. However, bats flying from the periphery of the flight channel, such that they had to make a small turn a

To determine the sources and targets of auditory pathways that bypass the inferior colliculus in the mustache bat, we injected WGA-HRP in the medial geniculate body and related auditory nuclei of the thalamus as well as in the lower brainstem. We used electrophysiological methods to verify that the injection electrode was in an area responsive to sound. The only thalamic injections that produced retrograde transport to cells in auditory nuclei caudal to the inferior colliculus were those that included the suprageniculate nucleus. These injections labeled a group of large multipolar cells lying

The ability of the echolocating bat, Eptesicus fuscus, to detect a sonar target is affected by the presence of other targets along the same axis at slightly different ranges. If echoes from one target arrive at about the same delay as echoes from another target, clutter interference occurs and one set of echoes masks the other. Although the bat's sonar emissions and the echoes themselves are 2 to 5 ms long, echoes (of approximately equal sensation levels--around 15 dB SL) only interfere with each other if they arrive within 200 to 400 microseconds of the same arrival time. This figure is an es

1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) can damage dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra in many mammals with biochemical and cellular changes that are relatively similar to those observed in Parkinson's disease. Our study examined whether MPTP-treated echolocation bats can cause changes in bat echolocation system. By considering ultrasound spectrums, auditory brainstem-evoked potentials and flight trajectories of normal bats, we observed that the vocal, auditory, orientation and movement functions of MPTP-treated bats were significantly impaired, and they exhibited various

Big brown bats form large maternity colonies of up to 200 mothers and their pups. If pups are separated from their mothers, they can locate each other using vocalizations. The goal of this study was to systematically characterize the development of echolocation and communication calls from birth through adulthood to determine whether they develop from a common precursor at the same or different rates, or whether both types are present initially. Three females and their six pups were isolated from our captive breeding colony. We recorded vocal activity from postnatal day 1 to 35, both when the

Echolocating bats emit trains of intense ultrasonic biosonar pulses and listen to weaker echoes returning from objects in their environment. Identification and categorization of echoes are crucial for orientation and prey capture. Bats are social animals and often fly in groups in which they are exposed to their own emissions and to those from other bats, as well as to echoes from multiple surrounding objects. Sound pressure levels in these noisy conditions can exceed 110 dB, with no obvious deleterious effects on echolocation performance. Psychophysical experiments show that big brown bats (E

Many species of bat emit acoustic signals and use information carried by echoes reflecting from nearby objects to navigate and forage. It is widely documented that echolocating bats adjust the features of sonar calls in response to echo feedback; however, it remains unknown whether audiovocal feedback contributes to sonar call design. Audiovocal feedback refers to the monitoring of one's own vocalizations during call production and has been intensively studied in nonecholocating animals. Audiovocal feedback not only is a necessary component of vocal learning but also guides the control of the

The activity of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system in mustached bats, Pteronotus p. parnellii, was studied by monitoring changes in the mechanical properties of the cochlea. The changing properties were expressed by the decay time (DT) of cochlear microphonic potentials produced by transient-induced ringing (Henson et al., 1995). Tape-recorded roost noise (biosonar and communication sounds) produced sudden, marked decreases in DT when presented to the contralateral ear of animals adapted to the quiet. When the animals were first removed from their roosts the DT was relatively short

Bats navigating clutter must steer around obstacles to avoid collision, while simultaneously planning future flight trajectories. In this study, we investigated active sensing strategies of two bat species negotiating turns under matched geometric constraints. We compare the Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus), a lingual echolocator that can actively direct its sonar beam axis using tongue driven mechanisms, and the short-tailed fruit bat (Carollia perspicillata), a laryngeal nasal echolocator whose head aim and nose leaf shape emission directionality. Bats flew through a felt lined, 'L
