Cross-linked poly(N-benzyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide) (BVP resin) was found to be very efficient in removing pathogenic human viruses from aqueous solution. From January to December in 1992, an epidemic of aseptic meningitis occurred in Gifu Prefecture in children. Epidemiological, virological and serological investigations were performed. A day care teacher presented with complaints of headache, neck stiffness, and fever. Echovirus 6 (E6) and echovirus 11 (E11) are common causes of meningitis and other human diseases; they are among the most frequently isolated enteroviruses worldwide. In the present work we have studied genetic variability over the entire VP1 gene of selected isolates representing a wide geographical and temporal range. We report an outbreak of echovirus 6 meningitis in a neonatal intensive care unit in central Greece from July to August 2011. The most probable source of the outbreak was a mother; during hospitalization, her neonate was initially infected, followed by 7 more. Stricter infection control measures were implemented, and no other cases have been observed.

A wide range of etiologies can cause hemifacial spasm (HFS), including infection. In this case report, a 44-year-old woman developed HFS and was explored surgically 7 years later. No abnormalities were found. Afterward, treatment of a surgical wound infection with an oral cephalosporin resulted in a temporary HFS remission that had never occurred previously. This antibiotic experience prompted further workup for an underlying infection, which ultimately led to diagnosis of Lyme disease. Presentation of HFS due to Lyme disease has not been reported.
