Factors Explaining Socio-Economic Inequalities in Cancer Survival: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: There is strong and well-documented evidence that socio-economic inequality in cancer survival exists within and between countries, but the underlying causes of these differences are not well understood. METHODS: We systematically searched the Ovid Medline, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases up to 31 May 2020. Observational studies exploring pathways by which socio-economic position (SEP) might causally influence cancer survival were included. RESULTS: We found 74 eligible articles published between 2005 and 2020. Cancer stage, other tumor characteristics, health-related lifestyle beha

Socio-economic factors as indicators for various animal diseases in Sardinia.

The need to consider the role of social factors in the efficacy of farm management and, consequently, in the onset and persistence of diseases typical to animal farms is increasingly being realized increasingly worldwide. Many risk analysis studies have been conducted to assess the role of various factors in the development of animal diseases; however, very few have accounted for the role of social factors. The aim of this work was to bridge this gap, with the main hypothesis that different socio-economic factors could be valid indicators for the occurrence of different animal diseases. A soci

Risk factors for presbycusis in a socio-economic middle-class sample.

UNLABELLED: Presbycusis, or the aging ear, involves mainly the inner ear and the cochlear nerve, causing sensorineural hearing loss. Risk factors include systemic diseases and poor habits that cause inner ear damage and lead to presbycusis. Correct identification of these risk factors is relevant for prevention. AIM: To evaluate the prevalence and to identify the risk factors of presbycusis in a sample aged over 40 years. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective case series. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: medical records of 625 patients were evaluated. Presbycusis was identified using pure tone audiometry, spe

Socio-economic versus obstetric risk factors for drug addiction in offspring.

Two possible risk factors for drug addiction were weighed against each other: (1) perinatal factors associated with obstetric medication at time of birth; and (2) factors associated with familial socio-economic conditions at time of birth. The subjects comprised 200 amphetamine addicts and 200 opiate addicts born in Stockholm 1945-1966. In a matched case control study, addicts were compared to their siblings with regard to possible obstetric risk factors by means of conditional logistic regression controlling for socio-economic level and civil status. Administration of opiates, barbiturates an

Family extension and the elderly: economic, demographic, and family cycle factors.

This paper reports on the results of applying a multivariate regression model of living arrangements choices to census data on the 1970 U. S. population of nonmarried, nonparenting adults. The model examines the factors affecting living with (1) relatives or (2) living alone or with nonrelatives. These factors include sex, income, marital history, and age. In addition, the model tests whether living arrangements choices differ for the elderly relative to other ages. The analysis shows that higher income, the experience of divorce, and being male are all associated with a higher probability of

BACKGROUND: The risk factors and financial implications of revision thumb carpometacarpal joint (CMC) arthroplasty are unclear. The authors aimed to identify risk factors for revision thumb CMC surgery and how CMC surgery affects health care cost and utilization. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective longitudinal analysis using a nationwide claims database, the Optum de-identified Clinformatics Data Mart, between October 1, 2015, and December 31, 2018. Health care utilization and costs were measured from 1 year preoperatively to 3 years postoperatively. Generalized linear mixed-effec

Socio-economic factors and rural-urban differences in patients undergoing emergency laparotomy.

BACKGROUND: Emergency laparotomy (EL) is a common surgical procedure with high rates of mortality and complications. Socio-economic circumstances and regional differences have an influence on the utilization of care and outcomes in many diagnostic groups, but there are only a few studies focusing on their effect in EL population. The aim of this study was to examine the socio-economic and regional differences in the rate of EL within one tertiary care hospital district. METHODS: Retrospective single-center study of 573 patients who underwent EL in Oulu University Hospital between May 2015 and

The Impact of the Main Negative Socio-Economic Factors on Female Fertility.

The negative relationship between fertility and income is well known to economists and demographers. Developed countries have experienced a remarkable decline in their fertility rate as they have become richer. Lifestyle choices can affect a woman's ability to conceive. Tobacco use and heavy drinking is associated with an increased risk of ovulation disorders, and being overweight or significantly underweight can inhibit normal ovulation. Our research is focused on evaluating the main risk factors that influence female fertility. We assembled a country-specific dataset on birth rate and socio-

Applications of machine learning techniques to predict filariasis using socio-economic factors.

Filariasis is one of the major public health concerns in India. Approximately 600 million people spread across 250 districts of India are at risk of filariasis. To predict this disease, a pilot scale study was carried out in 30 villages of Karimnagar district of Telangana from 2004 to 2007 to collect epidemiological and socio-economic data. The collected data are analysed by employing various machine learning techniques such as Naïve Bayes (NB), logistic model tree, probabilistic neural network, J48 (C4.5), classification and regression tree, JRip and gradient boosting machine. The performance

Dietary and socio-economic factors associated with beriberi in breastfed Lao infants.

A case-control study was conducted to investigate the dietary and socio-economic factors associated with beriberi in infants attending three public hospitals in Vientiane, Lao PDR. Forty-three breast-feeding infants with a median (range) age of 3 (1-9) months were admitted with beriberi. This was defined as the presence of signs of congestive heart failure or shock in the absence of fever or other signs of sepsis, hypovolaemia or cardiac abnormalities, with rapid clinical improvement following parenteral thiamine. Subjects were matched by age and diet to 43 breast-feeding healthy control infan

Clinical and economic factors important to anaesthetic choice for day-case surgery.

Clinical and economic factors that are important to consider when selecting anaesthesia for day-case surgery can differ from those for inpatient anaesthesia. Patients undergoing day-case surgery tend to be healthier and have shorter durations of surgery. They expect less anxiety before surgery, amnesia for the surgical experience, a rapid return to normal (normal mentation with minimal pain and nausea) after surgery, and lower expenses. However, the latter 2 expectations can conflict; older generic drugs have lower acquisition costs but often impose longer recovery times. Longer recovery perio

The dietary intake of the population depends on a number of external socio-economic and individual behavioral factors. External factors, including physical and economic availability of food, are indicators of food security of the population, the absence of which increases the risk of malnutrition. The importance of the cost of food in combination with the income of an individual or family is an significant factor in food choice, affecting the quality of the diet. The aim of this study was to examine the most significant socio-economic and demographic factors that could affect the nature and qu
