BACKGROUND: The role of socioeconomic status (SES) in the individual risk of contracting scabies in industrialized countries has not been specifically examined. This study aimed to assess potential associations between SES and scabies diagnosis.
METHODS: The SES of a retrospective cohort of subjects residing in the province of Ferrara, north-east Italy, who were diagnosed with scabies between 2016 and 2024, was evaluated. SES was represented through an ecological-based deprivation index that identified five subgroups, ranging from I (highest SES) to V (lowest SES).
RESULTS: A total of 307 su

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported discrepancies in cause-specific mortality among groups of individuals with different socio-economic status. However, most of the studies were limited by the specificity of the investigated populations and the broad definitions of the causes of death. The aim of the present population-based study was to explore the dependence of disease specific mortalities on the socio-economic status in Sweden, a country with universal health care. Another aim was to investigate possible gender differences.
METHODS: Using the 2006 update of the Swedish Family-Cancer

The association between socio-economic status (SES) and respiratory and allergic disorders is controversial, and conflicting results are reported in literature. We examined this association using as indicators of SES parental education and occupation. Persistent cough resulted inversely associated with SES, while current wheezing and atopic dermatitis were directly associated with SES. The role of SES on frequency of respiratory and allergic conditions in Italy needs to be further investigated, although our results confirm a higher frequency of allergic dermatitis and a lower frequency of pers

The influence of socio-economic status on morbidity was studied in 122 unselected consecutive patients with homozygous sickle cell disease in steady state. They included 65 females and 57 males, divided into three social classes (I, II and III, from highest to lowest). The morbidity indices used were, frequency of bone pain crisis, leg ulceration, growth index and the degree of anaemia as denoted by the mean steady haemoglobin level. It was found that the frequency of bone pain crisis was significantly higher in social class III patients than in social class I and social class II (P < 0.01). L

Professional status in healthcare is determined not only by educational preparation or statutory scope of practice, but also by how a profession functions within reimbursement systems, labor markets, and healthcare delivery. This article applies a health economics framework to evaluate the current professional status of audiology in the United States using observable economic indicators rather than aspirational goals or regulatory intent. Drawing on evidence synthesized from companion analyses of workforce trends, professional earnings, educational investment, reimbursement policy, and labor m

OBJECTIVE: To investigate over-weight prevalence and socio-demographic and economic correlates in Chinese adolescents.
METHODS: Weight, height, waist circumference, and socio-demo-graphic and economic variables of 6863 middle and high school students were measured.
RESULTS: 10% of girls and 17% of boys were overweight. Waist circumference and overweight risk were significantly associated with pubertal status (P<0.05). High levels of parental education and family income were significant risk factors for overweight (P<0.05).
DISCUSSION: Our findings underscore the need for development of evid

INTRODUCTION: Patients from low socioeconomic backgrounds are empirically considered more difficult to treat. The objectives were to evaluate low socioeconomic status of patients as a factor associated with increased treatment need and the correlation between socioeconomic status and dysmorphosis on one hand, and cooperation level on the other.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective comparative monocentric observational cohort study. Included subjects were under 16 years old at the time of orthodontic braces placement and were beneficiaries of the complémentaire santé solidaire (C2S)

BACKGROUND: Planning and transport agencies play a vital role in influencing the design of townscapes, travel modes and travel behaviors, which in turn impact on the walkability of neighbourhoods and residents' physical activity opportunities. Optimising neighbourhood walkability is desirable in built environments, however, the population health benefits of walkability may be offset by increased exposure to traffic related air pollution. This paper describes the spatial distribution of neighbourhood walkability and weighted road density, a marker for traffic related air pollution, in Sydney, A

BACKGROUND: Associations between socio-economic status (SES), personality and inflammation were examined to determine whether low SES subjects scoring high on neuroticism or hostility might suffer relatively higher levels of inflammation than affluent subjects.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional design, 666 subjects were recruited from areas of high (most deprived - "MD") and low (least deprived - "LD") deprivation. IL-6, ICAM-1, CRP and fibrinogen were measured along with demographic and health-behaviour variables, and personality traits of neuroticism, extraversion and psychoticism (hostility).

BACKGROUND: The developed world is experiencing an 'epidemic' of childhood obesity but little is known about the prevalence of obesity, or underweight, amongst adolescents from minority ethnic groups in the UK. An understanding of the prevalence of obesity and overweight in these populations is important since some ethnic groups may be particularly vulnerable to the adverse health effects associated with obesity.
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To examine levels of extreme obesity, obesity, overweight and underweight amongst a representative sample of adolescents from different ethnic groups in East London

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of socio-economic status (SES) on the outcome of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: Regional cardiac surgical unit.
PATIENTS: 1994 consecutive patients undergoing non-emergency CABG.
MEASURES: SES was determined from the patient's postcode using Carstairs tables. The primary end-point was all-cause mortality at 30 days.
RESULTS: There were 50 deaths (2.5%) within 30 days of surgery. A higher Carstairs score demonstrated a trend towards increased 30-day mortality (odds ratio (OR) 1.09 per unit, 95% CI 1.00

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sociodemographic factors and diabetes knowledge play a crucial role in the management and long-term outcomes of type 2 diabetes, influencing both disease progression and the risk of complications. We aimed to assess the relationship between socio-economic status and diabetes knowledge using a demographically appropriate questionnaire for evaluating socioeconomic status and a culturally tailored bilingual diabetes knowledge assessment test for patients with type 2 diabetes in a multi-ethnic setting.
METHODS: Our study was conducted in Mureş County, Romania, among adults wi

AIM: There are a number of genetic and environmental factors that are associated with an increased risk of developing coeliac disease. Our aim was to determine whether socio-economic deprivation increases or reduces the development of the disease.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study identified all children <16 years old diagnosed with coeliac disease in the same tertiary paediatric centre between January 1995 and December 2011. Data, including age at diagnosis and postcode, were collected and linked with the quintile rank of the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation score 2008, a measure of socio-

The kidney is a target organ for the dysregulated host response to infection that defines sepsis, and acute kidney injury (AKI) is often an early manifestation of this response. Current sepsis criteria for adults (Sepsis-3) continue to include outmoded measures of kidney health, such as absolute creatinine values, which are used in organ failure scoring independently of baseline kidney function or treatment with dialysis. This approach perpetuates disparities, as older female patients require much larger decreases in kidney function compared with young male patients to achieve the same 'renal

BACKGROUND: The impact of societal factors on the occurrence of head and neck cancers (HNCs) remains understudied, especially in the Nordic countries.
METHODS: To quantify the association between socio-economic status (SES) and the occurrence of HNCs, this cohort study uses data from the Nordic Occupational Cancer project that combine occupational and cancer registry data from 1961 to 2005 of 14.9 million individuals aged between 30 and 64 years. Occupational categories were combined into seven socio-economic categories. Standardized incidence ratio (SIR) analyses were conducted with the canc
