Nudging oral habits; application of behavioral economics in oral health promotion: a critical review.

BACKGROUND: Oral health disorders significantly contribute to the global incidence of chronic diseases. Nudge interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in enhancing people's decision-making and self-management capacities in a cost-efficient manner. As a result, these interventions could be valuable tools for fostering improved oral care habits. This critical review explores potential behavioral nudges applicable to promoting oral health. METHODS: A thorough electronic literature search was conducted on Scopus, Embase, and PubMed databases for papers published post-2008. The search focused

The behavioral economics of social anxiety disorder reveal a robust effect for interpersonal traits.

Recent evidence suggests that reduced generosity among individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) in behavioral economic tasks may result from constraint in changing behavior according to interpersonal contingencies. That is, people with SAD may be slower to be more generous when the situation warrants. Conversely, more global effects on generosity may be related to interpersonal vindictiveness, a dimension only somewhat related to SAD. A total of 133 participants, 73 with the generalized form of SAD, completed self-report instruments and a behavioral economic task with simulated interpers

Economic Holobiont: Influence of Parasites, Microbiota and Chemosignals on Economic Behavior.

The article is a perspective on utilization of microorganisms and chemosignals in studying human economic behavior. Research in biological roots of economic development has already confirmed that parasitic pressure influenced the creation and development of cultural norms and institutions. However, other effects of microorganisms on human groups and individual decision-making and behavior are heavily understudied. The perspective discusses how parasitic infections, sexually transmitted organisms and microbiota (i.e., "human holobiont") could causally influence risk-seeking behavior, impulsivit

Using behavioral economics to promote healthy behavior toward sun exposure in adolescents and young adults.

Skin cancer represents an important public health problem, and it is associated with ultraviolet radiation exposure, particularly at early ages. Unhealthy sun exposure and intentional tanning continue to be the trend among young people. Multiple interventions to raise awareness of the risks of sun exposure have been implemented, without necessarily translating into decreased unhealthy behaviors or skin cancer incidence rates. Behavioral economics adds a set of concepts and tools to potentially boost the efficacy of existing approaches to decrease unhealthy sun exposure. This paper reviews publ

Adapting TikTok and behavioral economics for youth-centered HIV prevention and PrEP education in the Philippines.

Social media platforms such as TikTok offer new opportunities for youth-centered HIV prevention and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) education. Prior evidence shows that young people respond best to short, authentic, and gain-framed messaging. This study aims to contextualize these findings within the Philippine setting and propose strategies that align with youth behavior, local policies, and national health priorities. Relevant literature on behavioral economics, HIV prevention, and digital engagement among Filipino youth and cis-MSM was reviewed and interpreted alongside existing education p

A behavioral economics-based telehealth intervention to improve aspirin adherence following hospitalization for acute coronary syndrome.

PURPOSE: A significant number of patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are nonadherent to aspirin after hospital discharge, with an associated increased risk of subsequent cardiovascular events. The purpose of this pilot study was to test the efficacy of a telehealth intervention based on behavioral economics to improve aspirin adherence following hospitalization for ACS. METHODS: We enrolled 130 participants (c¯X = 58 ± 10.7 years of age, 38% female, 45% black) from two hospitals. Patients were eligible if they owned a smartphone and were admitted to the hospital for ACS, prescribed as

Using Behavioral Economics to Reduce Low-Value Care Among Older Adults: A Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Use of low-value care is common among older adults. It is unclear how to best engage clinicians and older patients to decrease use of low-value services. OBJECTIVE: To test whether the Committing to Choose Wisely behavioral economic intervention could engage primary care clinicians and older patients to reduce low-value care. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Stepped-wedge cluster randomized clinical trial conducted at 8 primary care clinics of an academic health system and a private group practice between December 12, 2017, and September 4, 2019. Mortality and morbidity risks and economic behavior.

There are theoretical reasons to expect that high risk of mortality or morbidity during young adulthood decreases investment in human capital. However, investigation of this hypothesis is complicated by a variety of empirical challenges, including difficulties in inferring causation due to omitted variables and reverse causation. For example, to compare two groups with substantially different mortality rates, one typically has to use samples from different countries or periods, making it difficult to control for other relevant variables. Reverse causation is important because human capital inv

On the robustness of gender differences in economic behavior.

Because of the importance of economic decisions, researchers have looked into what factors influence them. Gender has received a lot of attention for explaining differences in behavior. But how much can be associated with gender, and how much with an individual's biological sex? We run an experimental online study with cis- and transgender participants that (1) looks into correlational differences between gender and sex for competitiveness, risk-taking, and altruism by comparing decisions across these different subject groups. (2) we prime participants with either a masculine or feminine gende

Neural basis of economic bubble behavior.

Throughout human history, economic bubbles have formed and burst. As a bubble grows, microeconomic behavior ceases to be constrained by realistic predictions. This contradicts the basic assumption of economics that agents have rational expectations. To examine the neural basis of behavior during bubbles, we performed functional magnetic resonance imaging while participants traded shares in a virtual stock exchange with two non-bubble stocks and one bubble stock. The price was largely deflected from the fair price in one of the non-bubble stocks, but not in the other. Their fair prices were spe

Clarifying the Behavioral Economics of Social Anxiety Disorder: Effects of Interpersonal Problems and Symptom Severity on Generosity.

Social anxiety disorder is associated with lower interpersonal warmth, possibly explaining its associated interpersonal impairment. Across two samples, we attempted to replicate previous findings that the disorder's constraint of interpersonal warmth can be detected via behavioral economic tasks. We also tested the test-retest stability of task indices. Results indicated that factors associated with social anxiety disorder (and not the disorder itself), such as the severity of social anxiety and more extreme interpersonal problems, lead to less generous behavior on the economic task examined.

A behavioral economics substance-free activity session (SFAS) approach to reducing substance use: Narrative review and intervention manual.

Standard brief alcohol and drug use interventions focus on motivating reductions in use and associated harms and have shown reliable reductions in these outcomes. However, effect sizes are small, and dissemination is limited by low rates of help seeking. Incorporating intervention elements focused on enhancing wellness, mood, and goal pursuit might enhance efficacy and appeal. The substance-free activity session (SFAS) integrates behavioral economic and motivational interviewing elements to enhance goal-directed and mood-enhancing activity patterns that might provide alternatives to alcohol- a

Pilot Trial of a Behavioral Economics-Informed Clinical Decision Support Alert to Improve Inpatient Tobacco Use Treatment Rates.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based tobacco use treatment (TUT) improves clinical outcomes, yet few clinicians initiate TUT for hospitalized patients who smoke. Clinical decision support (CDS) tools embedded in electronic health records (EHRs) offer opportunities to guide clinicians toward desired behaviors. CDS alerts informed by behavioral economics (BE-CDS) may increase TUT by presenting preselected orders and requiring justification to opt out. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate the impact of a BE-CDS alert on TUT ordering for inpatients who smoke. AIMS AND METHODS: In a two-arm randomized t

A behavioral economic approach to assessing demand for marijuana.

In the United States, marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug. Its prevalence is growing, particularly among young adults. Behavioral economic indices of the relative reinforcing efficacy (RRE) of substances have been used to examine the appeal of licit (e.g., alcohol) and illicit (e.g., heroin) drugs. The present study is the first to use an experimental, simulated purchasing task to examine the RRE of marijuana. Young-adult (M age = 21.64 years) recreational marijuana users (N = 59) completed a computerized marijuana purchasing task designed to generate demand curves and the related

Cannabidiol decreases motivation for cocaine in a behavioral economics paradigm but does not prevent incubation of craving in mice.

Cocaine is a highly consumed drug worldwide which directly targets brain areas involved in reinforcement processing and motivation. Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid that exerts protecting effects upon cocaine-induced addictive behavior, although many questions about the mechanisms of action and the specific affected processes remain unknown. Moreover, its effects on cue-induced cocaine-craving incubation have never been addressed. The present study aimed to assess the effects of cannabidiol (20 mg/kg, i.p.) administered during the acquisition of cocaine self-administration (0.75 mg/kg/infusio

"To reach the new generation… TikTok:" Applying behavioral economics to adolescent and young adult HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis education.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate how adolescents and young adults (AYA) would respond to the framing of health messages for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) using principles of psychology and economics (behavioral economics). Our hypothesis was that gain-frame messaging (focused on benefits) would be better received than loss-frame messaging (focused on risks). METHODS: Focus groups were held to determine AYA preferences for messaging around PrEP to design a social media video. Two videos were developed using either gain-frame (emphasized positive effects of PrEP) or loss-frame messaging (emphas

Behavioral economics of polysubstance use: The role of orexin-1 receptors in nicotine-induced augmentation of synthetic opioid consumption.

Nicotine and opioid use disorders are highly comorbid in clinical populations. Ongoing nicotine administration facilitates opioid consumption in both rodents and humans. Moreover, preclinical studies support that former exposure to nicotine solely during adolescence augments opioid consumption in adulthood similarly to acute nicotine administration. This suggests that developmental nicotine exposure persistently alters the neural substrates underlying motivation in a manner that resembles the acute pharmacological actions of nicotine. The orexin system mediates motivation to consume opioids in

Decreasing Opioid Addiction and Diversion Using Behavioral Economics Applied Through a Digital Engagement Solution: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite strong and growing interest in ending the ongoing opioid health crisis, there has been limited success in reducing the prevalence of opioid addiction and the number of deaths associated with opioid overdoses. Further, 1 explanation for this is that existing interventions target those who are opiate-dependent but do not prevent opioid-naïve patients from becoming addicted. OBJECTIVE: Leveraging behavioral economics at the patient level could help patients successfully use, discontinue, and dispose of their opioid medications in an acute pain setting. The primary goal of thi

Does eye-tracking have an effect on economic behavior?

Eye-tracking is becoming an increasingly popular tool for understanding the underlying behavior driving human decisions. However, an important unanswered methodological question is whether the use of an eye-tracking device itself induces changes in participants' behavior. We study this question using eight popular games in experimental economics chosen for their varying levels of theorized susceptibility to social desirability bias. We implement a simple between-subject design where participants are randomly assigned to either a control or an eye-tracking treatment. In seven of the eight games
