Genomic landscape underlying pituitary epigenome divergence between stickleback ecotypes.

The diversification of epigenetic regulation, including chromatin accessibility, is crucial for adaptation to diverse environments. Chromatin regulation in endocrine organs, such as the pituitary gland, plays a critical role in controlling various physiological processes underlying life-history traits, including growth, metabolism and reproduction. To understand the genetic architecture responsible for epigenomic divergence, we investigated chromatin accessibility in the pituitary gland using a parapatric pair of marine and stream ecotypes of the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatu

Screwworm eradication: inadvertent selection for noncompetitive ecotypes during mass rearing.

The rapid fixation of a rare allelic form of alpha-glycerol phosphate dehydrogenase is related to a loss of competitive ability in nature of factory-reared screwworm flies. The increase in frequency results from selection for survival under conditions of domestication and rapid development at high constant temperatures in the factory.

Listeria monocytogenes: Investigation of Fitness in Soil Does Not Support the Relevance of Ecotypes.

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a ubiquitous bacterium that causes the serious foodborne illness listeriosis. Although soil is a primary reservoir and a central habitat for Lm, little information is available on the genetic features underlying the fitness of Lm strains in this complex habitat. The aim of this study was to identify (i) correlations between the strains fitness in soil, their origin and their phylogenetic position (ii) identify genetic markers allowing Lm to survive in the soil. To this end, we assembled a balanced panel of 216 Lm strains isolated from three major ecological compa

Mixing of porpoise ecotypes in southwestern UK waters revealed by genetic profiling.

Contact zones between ecotypes are windows for understanding how species may react to climate changes. Here, we analysed the fine-scale genetic and morphological variation in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) around the UK by genotyping 591 stranded animals at nine microsatellite loci. The data were integrated with a prior study to map at high resolution the contact zone between two previously identified ecotypes meeting in the northern Bay of Biscay. Clustering and spatial analyses revealed that UK porpoises are derived from two genetic pools with porpoises from the southwestern UK being

Physiology of ecotypic plant response to sulfur dioxide in Geranium carolinianum L.

Populations of Geranium carolinianum, a winter annual plant common in disturbed habitats, vary in their foliar response to sulfur dioxide, and pollution resistance is characteristic of populations sampled from areas in which SO2 has been a prominent stress. The physiological basis of this ecotypic response was investigated using a whole-plant gaseous exchange system in which leaf resistance to H2O efflux and SO2 influx were concurrently monitored. Individual plants of distinct SO2 susceptibility were exposed to pollutant concentrations of either 0.4, 0.6 or 0.8 μl 1-1 in both the dark and ligh

Landscape of Cell States and Multicellular Ecotypes in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most prevalent type of lung cancer and remains a major global health burden. Comprehensive characterization of tumor microenvironment (TME) heterogeneity is critical for understanding tumor progression and clinical outcomes in NSCLC. In this study, we identified 34 transcriptionally defined cell states and 6 multicellular ecotypes using the EcoTyper framework, thereby systematically delineating the TME landscape of NSCLC. These cell states and ecotypes were further validated across 11 independent bulk transcriptomic cohorts, one single-cell RNA sequenc

Single-Cell Peptide Profiling to Distinguish Stickleback Ecotypes with Divergent Breeding Behavior.

Variation in parenting behavior is widespread across the animal kingdom, both within and between species. There are two ecotypes of the three-spined stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus) that exhibit dramatic differences in their paternal behavior. Males of the common ecotype are highly attentive fathers, tending to young from eggs to fry, while males of the white ecotype desert offspring as eggs. As the pituitary is a key regulator in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis between the brain and body, its peptides may influence paren

Ecotypic Variations Affected the Biological Effectiveness of Thymus daenensis Celak Essential Oil.

Thymus (Lamiaceae) is famous for its pharmacological properties. Thymus daenensis Celak (Avishan-e-denaee in Persian) is an endemic Thymus species in Iran and is traditionally used for its digestive, carminative, antitussive, antispasmodic, and expectorant attributes in folk medicine. Ecotypic oils were extracted and analyzed with the GC-MS. Their biological properties in terms of antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antigenotoxic activities were evaluated using the minimal inhibitory concentration, minimal bactericidal concentration, and DPPH, β-carotene, and comet assays. The GC-MS results for Th

Is embryo abortion a post-zygotic barrier to gene flow between Littorina ecotypes?

Genetic incompatibilities contribute to reproductive isolation between many diverging populations, but it is still unclear to what extent they play a role if divergence happens with gene flow. In contact zones between the "Crab" and "Wave" ecotypes of the snail Littorina saxatilis, divergent selection forms strong barriers to gene flow, while the role of post-zygotic barriers due to selection against hybrids remains unclear. High embryo abortion rates in this species could indicate the presence of such barriers. Post-zygotic barriers might include genetic incompatibilities (e.g. Dobzhansky-Mul

Aeromonas hydrophila clinical and environmental ecotypes as revealed by genetic diversity and virulence genes.

Aeromonas hydrophila strains recovered from clinical samples and ambient sources were phenotypically and genetically identified. In addition, the distribution of putative virulence factors was assayed. To determine the genetic diversity of these strains, random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC)-PCR markers were used. The discriminatory ability of the techniques, using Simpson's index, was 0.96 for both methods. The most consistent dendrogram was obtained when RAPD and ERIC data were combined. The genetic diversity revealed a high

Photosynthesis, carbon allocation, and growth of sulfur dioxide ecotypes ofGeranium carolinianum L.

This study investigated ways in which genetically determined differences in SO2 susceptibility resulting from ecotypic differentiation inGeranium carolinianum were expressed physiologically. The SO2-resistant and SO2-sensitive ecotypes were exposed to a combination of short- and long-term SO2 exposures to evaluate the responses of photosynthesis, H2S efflux from foliage (sulfur detoxification), photoassimilate retention, leaf-diffusive resistance to CO2, and growth. When exposed to SO2, both ecotypes re-emit sulfur in a volatile, reduced form, presumably as H2S. Because H2S efflux rates at var

Contrasting Coastal Environments Are Associated With Ecotype-Specific Leaf Polyphenolic Profiles and Bioactivity in Corema album subsp. album.

Corema album subsp. album is an endemic coastal shrub adapted to the harsh Mediterranean-Atlantic interface, where populations experience strong microclimatic variation. Understanding how such environmental pressures contribute to shaping its metabolic profiles is key to supporting conservation and sustainable valorization strategies based on the responsible use of renewable plant biomass, while reducing pressure on wild populations. This study compared the phytochemical composition and bioactivities of leaf extracts from two ecotypes collected in southern Portugal. Leaves were selected as a r

Parallel genetic divergence among coastal-marine ecotype pairs of European anchovy explained by differential introgression after secondary contact.

Ecophenotypic differentiation among replicate ecotype pairs within a species complex is often attributed to independent outcomes of parallel divergence driven by adaptation to similar environmental contrasts. However, the extent to which parallel phenotypic and genetic divergence patterns have emerged independently is increasingly questioned by population genomic studies. Here, we document the extent of genetic differentiation within and among two geographic replicates of the coastal and marine ecotypes of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) gathered from Atlantic and Mediterranean l

Low-pass whole-genome sequencing reveals genomic diversity and ecotype-specific adaptation in indigenous Tigrayan chickens.

Indigenous chickens play a critical role in food security and climate resilience in smallholder systems, yet their genomic diversity and adaptive potential remain insufficiently characterised. This study employed low-pass whole-genome sequencing (LP-WGS; 0.2-1.99×) to investigate genomic diversity, population structure, inbreeding and candidate environment-associated genomic variation in 33 chickens from highland, midland, and lowland agroecologies in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia. After imputation and stringent filtering, 23.4 million high-confidence SNPs were retained, including ~ 1

Widespread transmission in diverse ecotypes challenges visceral leishmaniasis control in East Africa.

East Africa is emerging as the global hot spot of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), yet efforts to eliminate it are hindered by substantial knowledge gaps in its ecoepidemiology. Here, we report on the high prevalence of Leishmania infection in Phlebotomus orientalis in Marsabit county, Kenya (3.9%), and Gedaref state, Sudan (3.6%), where this species comprised 99.8% (n = 1185) and 100% (n = 1350) of captured Phlebotomus females, respectively. In Aba Roba, Ethiopia, Phlebotomus martini accounted for 94.4% of 184 collected Phlebotomus females and had a lower infection rate of 1.5%. Phlebotomus orien

Unraveling epigenetic and genetic variations in response to cold stress in two lotus ecotypes.

Genetic variations accumulate over long evolutionary timescales, whereas epigenetic modifications can arise rapidly and be inherited across generations. However, the interplay between genetic and epigenetic variations in shaping ecotype-specific phenotypic plasticity remains elusive. Focusing on two lotus ecotypes that evolved under distinct winter temperature regions and display divergent annual growth cycles under cold stress, we generated DNA methylation landscapes across three sequence contexts (CG, CHG, and CHH, where H = A, T, or C) and identified single-cytosine methylation polymorphism

Evolution of immune and stromal cell states and ecotypes during gastric adenocarcinoma progression.

Understanding tumor microenvironment (TME) reprogramming in gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) progression may uncover novel therapeutic targets. Here, we performed single-cell profiling of precancerous lesions, localized and metastatic GACs, identifying alterations in TME cell states and compositions as GAC progresses. Abundant IgA+ plasma cells exist in the premalignant microenvironment, whereas immunosuppressive myeloid and stromal subsets dominate late-stage GACs. We identified six TME ecotypes (EC1-6). EC1 is exclusive to blood, while EC4, EC5, and EC2 are highly enriched in uninvolved tissues,

Genomic signatures of divergent selection are associated with social behaviour for spinner dolphin ecotypes.

Understanding the genomic basis of adaptation is critical for understanding evolutionary processes and predicting how species will respond to environmental change. Spinner dolphins in the eastern tropical Pacific (ETP) present a unique system for studying adaptation. Within this large geographical region are four spinner dolphin ecotypes with weak neutral genetic divergence and no obvious barriers to gene flow, but strong spatial variation in morphology, behaviour and habitat. These ecotypes have large population sizes, which could reduce the effects of drift and facilitate selection. To ident
