Protective effects of Trifuhalol A, a Phlorotannin derived from edible Brown seaweed Agarum cribrosum, on dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy in muscle cells and zebrafish models.

Muscle atrophy, characterized by declines in muscle mass and functionality, currently lacks effective therapeutic options, highlighting an urgent need for further research. This research aimed to elucidate the protective effects of Trifuhalol A (TFA), a phlorotannin derived from Agarum cribrosum, against dexamethasone (Dexa)-induced muscle atrophy in zebrafish and C2C12 cells. TFA enhanced differentiation of myoblasts and myotube formation by upregulating MyHC, myogenin, MyoD, p-Akt, and p-mTOR, as well as activation of key downstream effectors of the mTOR pathway, enhancing protein synthesis.

The antifungal activity of extracts of Osmundea pinnatifida, an edible seaweed, indicates its usage as a safe environmental fungicide or as a food additive preventing post-harvest fungal food contamination.

In the present work, we explored the antifungal activity of the wild edible seaweed Osmundea pinnatifida (Rhodophyta) collected from the Portuguese coast, which is used as a food seasoning in Scotland, Ireland and Portugal. We performed a sequential extraction of the seaweed components with methanol, dichloromethane and n-hexane. These extracts showed an antifungal activity against Alternaria infectoria and Aspergillus fumigatus. The n-hexane fraction of the seaweed inhibited the sporulation of Alternaria infectoria at 30 μg mL-1 and induced a statistically significant (P < 0.001) decrease in

A review of volatile compounds in edible macroalgae.

Seaweeds (green algae, red algae and brown algae) are rich in nutrients, and incorporating algae into the human diet can provide important health benefits. However, consumer acceptance of food is closely related to its flavor, and in this respect, volatile compounds are key factors. This article reviews the extraction methods and composition of volatile compounds from Ulva prolifera, Ulva lactuca, Sargassum spp. and economically valuable cultured seaweeds such as Undaria pinnatifida, Laminaria japonica, Neopyropia haitanensis and Neopyropia yezoensis. Research found that the volatile compounds

Investigation into the use of novel pretreatments in the fermentation of Alaria esculenta by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and kombucha SCOBY.

High pressure processing (HPP), ultrasound probe (USP) and ultrasound bath (USB) were applied to Alaria esculenta as a fermentation pre-treatment. Seaweed was then fermented by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (LAB) or symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY). Physiochemical properties of fermented seaweed were measured. pH was significantly different (p < 0.05) across SCOBY-fermented samples with different pre-treatments but not LAB-fermented samples (p > 0.05). There was a significant difference (p < 0.05) in total viable count (TVC) with the highest count in HPP-treated samples, and low

Enhancing the dispersibility of Gelidium amansii-derived microfibrillated cellulose through centrifugal fractionation.

Hydrothermal pretreatment is useful for microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) preparation due to its safety, but the remaining hemicellulose might affect MFC properties. This study aimed to investigate the effect of centrifugation time on hemicellulose removal and the physicochemical properties of MFC obtained after hydrothermal pretreatment and micro-fibrillation. In this study, centrifugation was applied to the MFC suspension at varying duration times. Composition analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated that fractionated MFC has no hemicellulose content after 10, 20, and 30 min

Seasonal variation in the nutritional composition and potentially toxic elements of the red macroalga Palmaria palmata in the Arctic.

Algae can be a sustainable food source rich in proteins, polysaccharides, minerals and vitamins. These compounds will vary greatly due to seasonal and environmental fluctuations. The present study investigated the seasonal variations in the nutritional composition and potentially toxic elements of P. palmata harvested monthly in the Arctic, characterized by polar nights and midnight sun. A seasonal trend for the biochemical constituents was observed, where the dry matter and sugar content were higher during late summer and autumn and lower during late winter and spring. The ash and protein con

Cellulose microfiber production from green seaweed Ulva lactuca using hydrated deep eutectic solvent.

We investigated the effectiveness of hydrated deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to achieve tunable seaweed cellulose microstructures from Ulva lactuca. Cellulose was extracted via a sequential chemical protocol, then treated with 30% DESs (choline chloride (ChCl) or betaine as hydrogen bond acceptors and urea, citric acid, or oxalic acid as donors) combined with mechanical shearing. While most DESs combinations yielded spherical seaweed cellulose microparticles (dry diameter of 605-777 nm), the ChCl:urea formulation successfully produced seaweed cellulose microfibers (SCMFs). These SCMFs exhibited

Multi-omics analysis reveals the pathobiome-host interactions in the bleaching disease of the seaweed Saccharina japonica.

BACKGROUND: The emerging concept of the pathobiome has revolutionized our understanding of disease etiology by emphasizing the complex interactions between multiple pathogens and their hosts during disease progression. Although significant advancements have been made in characterizing the pathobiome in human, animal, and plant diseases, the pathobiome associated with seaweed diseases remains unexplored. Saccharina japonica, a commercially important farmed seaweed, has increasingly suffered from bleaching disease during its nursery stage, severely compromising the supply of healthy sporelings a

Region-specific carbon metabolism underlies floridean starch accumulation in rhizoid-like filament cells of Pyropia yezoensis.

BACKGROUND: Pyropia yezoensis thalli exhibit pronounced cellular differentiation throughout their growth and development. In particular, basal rhizoid-like filament cells (R-region cells) differ significantly from other thallus cells in cell morphology, photosynthetic physiology and carbon metabolism. Previous studies have shown that abundant floridean starch granules accumulate in R-region cells, whereas only few floridean starch granules are present in neighbouring vegetative cells (V-region cells). However, the specific mechanism underlying floridean starch accumulation in R-region cells re
