Distance Education for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Saudi Arabia: Challenges and Support.

BACKGROUND: On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 to be a global pandemic. This prompted many countries, including Saudi Arabia, to suspend students' attendance at schools and to start distance education. This sudden shift in the educational system has affected students' learning, particularly for d/Deaf and hard-of-hearing (d/Dhh) students, who have unique language and communication needs. AIM: This study explores the challenges and support methods for d/Dhh students during their distance education in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A qualitative research study using sem

Associations between test anxiety and academic achievement in distance education: avoidance- and overcontrol-related process and the moderating role of exam format preference.

INTRODUCTION: The increased use of distance education has heightened the importance of understanding the self-regulatory correlates of student academic success. Although test anxiety has generally been associated with lower academic achievement, the behavioral and dispositional variables statistically linking these constructs remain insufficiently understood, particularly in digitally mediated learning environments. Grounded in Situated Expectancy-Value Theory and Self-Regulated Learning theory, this study examined the direct and indirect associations between test anxiety and cumulative GPA th

Creating Accessible Online Content for Health Professions Education.

In 2021, nearly 6% of learners studying medicine disclosed disabilities, which was more than double that of 2015.1 Learners seek accommodations for visual, hearing, mobility, and learning disabilities, as well as chronic health conditions. Strategies for supporting accessibility align with best practices for audiovisual and instructional design; however, they are not consistently used in online education. Health professions educators are responsible for ensuring online content is accessible to all learners.

Description and nomenclature of organ subdivisions in the Terminologia Anatomica and in anatomical education: Comparison with cancer classifications.

Terminology is the basis for communication among medical professionals. For anatomists, their daily work is based on the Terminologia Anatomica (TA), while pathologists cite the Tumor Node Metastasis (TNM) classification when referring to the anatomical boundaries and regions of malignant tumors. Terminologia Anatomica and clinical-based classifications, including the TMN classification of tumors, use a world-wide standardized nomenclature, which has been revised regularly to incorporate new anatomical discoveries and clinically relevant structures. In medical education, students are familiari

Design and Development of a Novel Distance Learning Telementoring System Using Off-the-Shelf Materials and Software.

OBJECTIVE: To design and develop a distance learning (DL) system for the transference of laparoscopic surgery knowledge and skill constructed from off-the-shelf materials and commercially available software. INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive surgery offers significant benefits over traditional surgical procedures, but adoption rates for many procedures are low. Skill and confidence deficits are two of the culprits. DL combined with simulation training and telementoring may address these issues with scale.
