Educators' experiences in special education institutions during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The COVID-19 outbreak has had a profound impact on education worldwide. As a result of the educational institutions closures, it is likely that the impact on special education would be more detrimental since special education population becomes more vulnerable in the aftermath of an outbreak. In the scope of this study, a researcher created survey was used to examine educators' teaching experiences and their perceptions about the impact of COVID-19 outbreak on special education students. The sample included 215 educators working in the Special Education and Rehabilitation Centers (SERCs) in Tu

Special education teachers' post-pandemic use of assistive technology.

PURPOSE: Assistive technology (AT) enables students with disabilities to access school curricula. Teacher knowledge about AT is a key predictor of use, but common barriers to AT adoption include insufficient preparation, training, and funding. During the COVID-19 pandemic, mandated remote learning led to expanded technological resources and access. Understanding in-service special education teachers' (SETs') current knowledge, training, utilisation, and support for AT in schools in the post-pandemic context is an essential step for improving practice, and the purpose of this paper. Childhood Placement in Special Education and Adult Well-Being.

The present study investigates the relationship between childhood placement in special education and adult well-being among 1,377 low-income, minority children participating in the Chicago Longitudinal Study. Roughly 16% of the sample received special education services in grades 1-8. After accounting for sociodemographic factors and early academic achievement, children receiving special education services tended to have lower rates of high school completion and fewer years of education, as well as greater rates of incarceration, substance misuse, and depression. Eighth grade academic achievem

Congenital Heart Defects and Receipt of Special Education Services.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the prevalence of receipt of special education services among children with congenital heart defects (CHDs) compared with children without birth defects. METHODS: Children born from 1982 to 2004 in metropolitan Atlanta with CHDs (n = 3744) were identified from a population-based birth defect surveillance program; children without birth defects (n = 860 715) were identified from birth certificates. Cohorts were linked to special education files for the 1992-2012 school years to identify special education services. Children with noncardiac defects or genetic syndrome

Prediction of special education placement from birth certificate data.

The overall goal of this research effort was to develop procedures for accurately identifying children at high risk for special education placement, based on information available at the time of birth. A file containing information on all births in New York City between 1976 and 1986 was matched against the 1992 BIOFILE, which contains information on all children enrolled in the New York City public school system in 1992. A matched file containing birth and school information on 471,165 children resulted from this process. Three sets of risk factors were derived from birth certificate data: pa

Exploring parental perceptions of special education in Saudi Arabia.

OBJECTIVES: Special education provision in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia has expanded considerably in recent decades, yet a persistent gap remains between parental expectations and the services their children actually receive. This study addresses an underexplored dimension of that gap by focusing specifically on segregated special education schools-a setting rarely examined in the Saudi literature. It investigates parents' perceptions of individualized instruction, school-family communication, and access to specialized support services, with the aim of identifying factors that undermine alignment betw

Sexually transmitted infection among adolescents receiving special education services.

BACKGROUND: To estimate the relative risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among children identified as having learning disabilities through the special education system. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used special education data and Medicaid data from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for calendar year 2002. The sample comprised 51,234 Medicaid-eligible children, aged 12-17 years, 8015 of whom were receiving special education services. Claims associated with diagnoses of STIs were abstracted, and logistic regression was used to estimate the odds of STI among children in different spe

Work-related violence, lifestyle, and health among special education teachers working in Finnish basic education.

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported higher levels of absenteeism due to illness among special education teachers compared to other teachers, but it is not known which factors might contribute to this difference. We examined whether health, health behaviors, and exposure to violence at work differed between special education and general education teachers in Finnish basic education. METHODS: Survey data from 5760 general and special education teachers were analyzed with multilevel logistic models adjusted for individual- and school-level confounding factors. RESULTS: No difference was found bet

Factors Associated with the Enjoyment of Physical Education Class for Children with Special Educational Needs.

Enjoying physical education class (PE) is important for children with special educational needs (SEN) due to its impact on their physical and mental health. However, there is a research gap concerning children with SEN and their enjoyment of PE. This exploratory study investigated how school children with and without SEN report enjoyment of physical education class and explored associated factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among school children with and without SEN. Both groups reported very high enjoyment of PE, but children without SEN had higher enjoyment. Among children with S

Implementing a Parent Education Program in the Special Care Nursery.

BACKGROUND: Parents of preterm hospitalized infants, whose lengths of stay can range from a few days to several months, often experience emotional liability. Because the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Nursery (SCN) is a stressful and intimidating environment, prompt attention should be given to reducing parental stress and increasing parental confidence in preparation to care for their child post-discharge. METHODS: A quality improvement pilot project was designed to evaluate the parent education and support program, titled HUG Your Baby, in a Level II SCN for its ability

The prevalence of poor reading in Dutch special elementary education.

The relative frequency of poor readers in Dutch general elementary education (GEE) and special elementary education (SEE) and the characteristics of their reading performance were investigated using a lexical decision procedure. According to the same norms that identified 9% of students as poor readers in GEE, no less than 73% of the students in SEE were classified as poor readers. On average, the GEE poor readers were better readers than those in SEE, but the findings do not point to substantial differences in reading processes between the two reader groups. Hypotheses about the nature of the

Prediction of residential independence of special education high school students.

The residential independence of post-secondary students was assessed for the 2,686 interviewees of the National Longitudinal Transition Study who had left United States high schools between 1985 and the time of the questionnaire in 1987. An index of residential placement independence was the dependent variable in a regression analysis that featured 37 community, family, student, and school program characteristics entered as block-wise predictors (i.e., entered in a controlled order). Results showed a total R2 of .443, with missing data, student maladaptive ("problem") behavior, student compete

Sociodemographic correlates, job satisfaction, and burnout among special education teachers.

BACKGROUND: Special education teachers are at heightened risk of job-related stress and burnout due to the emotional demands of working with students who have disabilities. In Saudi Arabia, the growing number of students with psychological comorbidities adds further complexity to the educational environment. However, limited research has addressed how teachers' sociodemographic characteristics and comorbid conditions among students affect their psychological well-being and job satisfaction. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the relationships between sociodemographic variables (gender, a

Early Childhood Special Education Teachers' Job Burnout and Psychological Stress.

RESEARCH FINDINGS: All teachers have demanding jobs and work with limited resources. However, working with young children with disabilities may place additional demands on early childhood special education (ECSE) teachers which may impact their well-being. Using the Job Demands and Resources model, the present study aimed to predict ECSE teachers' job burnout and psychological stress by using their job demands, job resources, and professional internal resources. An online survey was collected from 121 ECSE teachers from a large urban school district in a Western state of the United States. The
