Egocentric localization changes following unilateral strabismus surgery.

We measured spatial localization (using an open-loop pointing task) monocularly in each eye of eight patients undergoing unilateral strabismus surgery. Most of these patients had some degree of binocular vision. We found that, in most cases, changes in spatial localization produced by surgery on the operated eye paralleled those found in the other eye, both in magnitude and duration. Unilateral surgery can have central effects on egocentric localization.

EgoLoc: A Generalizable Solution for Temporal Interaction Localization in Egocentric Videos.

Analyzing hand-object interaction in egocentric vision facilitates VR/AR applications and human-robot policy transfer. Existing research has mostly focused on modeling the behavior paradigm of interactive actions (i.e., "how to interact"). However, the more challenging and fine-grained problem of capturing the critical moments of contact and separation between the hand and the target object (i.e., "when to interact") is still underexplored, which is crucial for immersive interactive experiences in mixed reality and robotic motion planning. Therefore, we formulate this problem as temporal inter

Happily egocentric: the impact of mood on children's mentalising, an exploratory study.

Relying on one's own egocentric knowledge to predict others' behaviour can lead to conflict. In adults, incidental happiness increases egocentric biases. This study was the first investigation of whether this is true for children. Younger (N = 90; aged 3 to 4.5), and older children (N = 75; aged 6to 7) watched short videos to induce happy or neutral mood. They then completed an age-appropriate false belief task. Younger children in the happiness condition were more likely to fail the task (Φ = .25), consistent with acting more egocentrically. The induction video did not affect older children's

Uni-Hand: Universal Hand Motion Forecasting in Egocentric Views.

Forecasting how human hands move in egocentric views is critical for applications like augmented reality, human-robot policy transfer, and service/assistive technologies. Recently, several hand trajectory prediction (HTP) methods have been developed to generate future possible hand waypoints, which still suffer from insufficient prediction targets, inherent modality gaps, entangled hand-head motion, and limited validation in downstream tasks. To address these limitations, we present Uni-Hand, a universal hand motion forecasting framework considering multi-modal input, multi-dimensional and mul

Sensitivity analysis for contamination in egocentric-network randomized trials with interference.

Egocentric-network randomized trials (ENRTs) are increasingly used to estimate causal effects under interference when measuring complete sociocentric network data is infeasible. ENRTs rely on egocentric network sampling, where a set of egos is first sampled, and each ego recruits a subset of its neighbors as alters. Treatments are then randomized across egos. While the observed ego-networks are disjoint by design, the underlying population network may contain edges connecting them, leading to contamination. Under a design-based framework, we show that the Horvitz-Thompson estimators of direct

Modified Egocentric Viewpoint for Softer Seated Experience in Virtual Reality.

Users in a prolonged experience of virtual reality adopt a sitting position according to their task, as they do in the real world. However, inconsistencies in the haptic feedback from a chair they sit on in the real world and that which is expected in the virtual world decrease the feeling of presence. We aimed to change the perceived haptic features of a chair by shifting the position and angle of the users' viewpoints in the virtual reality environment. The targeted features in this study were seat softness and backrest flexibility. To enhance the seat softness, we shifted the virtual viewpo

Parietal cortex codes for egocentric space beyond the field of view.

Our subjective experience links covert visual and egocentric spatial attention seamlessly. However, the latter can extend beyond the visual field, covering all directions relative to our body. In contrast to visual representations, little is known about unseen egocentric representations in the healthy brain. Parietal cortex appears to be involved in both, because lesions in it can lead to deficits in visual attention, but also to a disorder of egocentric spatial awareness, known as hemispatial neglect. Here, we used a novel virtual reality paradigm to probe our participants' egocentric surroun

Evidence for separate allocentric and egocentric space processing in neglect patients.

Spatial orientation was investigated in two different conditions: (a) when the shape of the enclosure was the only available information; (b) when a clearly perceivable visual cue was added. Three groups of subjects were investigated: normal controls, right brain-damaged patients without and with hemispatial neglect. The performance of the first two groups clearly demonstrated the capacity to use the geometric properties of the environment and to integrate this information with an additional visual cue. Considered as a group, patients with hemispatial neglect were able to use the shape of the

Altered Affective Egocentricity in Autism: Implications for Facial Emotion Perception.

PURPOSE: Affective egocentricity, the tendency to project one's own affect onto others, appears reduced in those with alexithymia, a condition often linked to autism. This study investigated the relationship between self-reported affectivity (implicit and explicit) and emotion perception (accuracy, perceived intensity) as well as facial muscle responses (corrugator supercilii, zygomaticus major) in autism. METHODS: Autistic adults (N = 40) and a non-autistic comparison group (N = 40) watched facial expressions whilst recorded (fEMG) and judged the stimuli afterwards. RESULTS: For explicit af

Flexible egocentric and allocentric representations of heading signals in parietal cortex.

By systematically manipulating head position relative to the body and eye position relative to the head, previous studies have shown that vestibular tuning curves of neurons in the ventral intraparietal (VIP) area remain invariant when expressed in body-/world-centered coordinates. However, body orientation relative to the world was not manipulated; thus, an egocentric, body-centered representation could not be distinguished from an allocentric, world-centered reference frame. We manipulated the orientation of the body relative to the world such that we could distinguish whether vestibular hea

Induced motion: isolation and dissociation of egocentric and vection-entrained components.

Induced motion (IM) is illusory motion of a stationary test target opposite to the direction of the real motion of the inducing stimulus. We define egocentric IM as an apparent motion of the test target relative to the observer, and vection-entrained IM as an apparent motion of a stationary object along with an apparent motion of the self (vection) induced by the same stimulus. These two forms of IM are often confounded, and tests for distinguishing between them have not been devised. We have devised such tests. Our test for egocentric IM relies on evidence that this form of IM is due mainly t

Mirror writing resulting from an egocentric representation disorder: a case report.

Buchwald (1878 ) used the term 'mirror writing' to indicate writing in the reverse direction to what is normal in a particular language and in which the individual letters are also reversed. Cases of healthy individuals (i.e., Leonardo da Vinci and Lewis Carroll) as well as brain-damaged patients have been described in the literature. Here, we report the case of PM, a 70-year-old right-handed woman who showed right hemiplegia and mirror writing following a stroke in the left lenticular nucleus and internal capsulae. PM underwent a complete neuropsychological evaluation, which included copying,

On the Robustness of Modeling Grounded Word Learning Through a Child's Egocentric Input.

What insights can machine learning bring to understanding human language acquisition? Large language and multimodal models have achieved remarkable capabilities, but their reliance on massive training datasets creates a fundamental mismatch with children, who succeed in acquiring language from comparatively limited input. To help bridge this gap, researchers have increasingly trained neural networks using data similar in quantity and quality to children's input. Taking this approach to the limit, Vong et al. (2024) showed that a multimodal neural network trained on 61 hours of visual and lingu

Linguistic perspective-taking in verbal communication with LLMs: evidence of an egocentric bias.

Since the expansion of generative AI's functions, chatbots such as Open AI's Chat-GPT appear as more than tools. They can be perceived as communicative partners, shaping exchanges with high variability and linguistic competence. Current versions, such as Chat-GPT 5.5, even provide spoken language using different verbal styles and vocabulary, intonation and prosody. Investigating this new context of communication, we question whether people expect chatbots to detect non-literal meanings. Extending the illusory transparency of intention research paradigm introduced by Keysar, information was pre

Personalized Video-Based Hand Taxonomy Using Egocentric Video in the Wild.

OBJECTIVE: Hand function is central to inter- actions with our environment. Developing a comprehen- sive model of hand grasps in naturalistic environments is crucial across various disciplines, including robotics, ergonomics, and rehabilitation. Creating such a taxonomy poses challenges due to the significant variation in grasping strategies that individuals may employ. For instance, individuals with impaired hands, such as those with spinal cord injuries (SCI), may develop unique grasps not used by unimpaired individuals. These grasping techniques may differ from person to person, influenced

The dorsomedial prefrontal cortex promotes self-control by inhibiting the egocentric perspective.

The dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) plays a crucial role in social cognitive functions, including perspective-taking. Although perspective-taking has been linked to self-control, the mechanism by which the dmPFC might facilitate self-control remains unclear. Using the multimodal neuroimaging dataset from the Human Connectome Project (Study 1, N =978 adults), we established a reliable association between the dmPFC and self-control, as measured by discounting rate-the tendency to prefer smaller, immediate rewards over larger, delayed ones. Experiments (Study 2, N = 36 adults) involving hig

How the size and structure of egocentric networks change during a life transition.

While social networks are typically relatively stable in size over time, major changes in life circumstances can result in opportunities to acquire new friends. How young adults manage their relationships with their wider network of friends and family during such transitions is, however, not well understood. Using a prospective longitudinal design, we investigate changes in the size and composition of complete egocentric networks of two cohorts of young adults moving away from home to college. We show that, although networks grow rapidly due to an influx of new friends made at college, the soc

A neural code for egocentric spatial maps in the human medial temporal lobe.

Spatial navigation and memory rely on neural systems that encode places, distances, and directions in relation to the external world or relative to the navigating organism. Place, grid, and head-direction cells form key units of world-referenced, allocentric cognitive maps, but the neural basis of self-centered, egocentric representations remains poorly understood. Here, we used human single-neuron recordings during virtual spatial navigation tasks to identify neurons providing a neural code for egocentric spatial maps in the human brain. Consistent with previous observations in rodents, these

Lesion Sites Associated with Allocentric and Egocentric Visuospatial Neglect in Acute Stroke.

Visuospatial neglect is a disorder that can often result from stroke and is characterized by an inability to attend to contralesional stimuli. Two common subtypes include allocentric (object-centered) neglect and egocentric (viewer-centered) neglect. In allocentric neglect, spatial inattention is localized to the contralesional side of an object regardless of its relative position to the observer. In egocentric neglect, spatial inattention is localized to the contralesional side of the individual's midline. The neuroanatomical correlates of each subtype are unknown. However, recent work has su
