Remote sensing for monitoring and managing Eichhornia crassipes: a review of methods, applications, and decision-support frameworks.

Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) is among the world's most aggressive aquatic invasive plants, with severe ecological and socioeconomic impacts on freshwater ecosystems. Over the last two decades, remote sensing has emerged as a critical tool for monitoring its spread and supporting management decisions, offering scalable, repeatable, and increasingly precise assessments. This review synthesizes 56 studies published between 2004 and 2025, examining how different platforms (satellites, UAVs, airborne, proximal), sensor types (multispectral, hyperspectral, SAR), and analytical methods (inde

6PPD and 6PPD-Q driven phytotoxicity in Eichhornia crassipes: From molecular damages to ecological potential implications.

N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) and its derivative 6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) are emerging concerns due to their widespread occurrence and poorly understood ecological effects. This study reveals the multifaceted toxicity mechanisms of these compounds in water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) through an integrated physiological-multi-omics approach. We demonstrate that 6PPD-Q triggers severe oxidative stress and photosynthetic impairment, reducing the maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) by 22.58 % at 20 μg/L. While plants activated defense responses through phytohorm

Isolation of Vibrio cholera El Tor Inaba From Lemna minor and Eichhornia crassipens Roots in Veracruz, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: During epidemic periods, the strain Vibrio cholera El Tor has been isolated from the aquatic macrophyte roots of Eichhornia crassipens and Lemna minor, suggesting that aquatic plants could be environmental reservoirs through either a non-specific association or a commensalism relationship. Therefore, it is important to understand V. cholera reservoirs in order to establish prevention strategies against this pathogen. OBJECTIVES: Our interest was to determine whether V. cholera could be isolated and typified from L. minor and E. crassipens roots. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2004 t

Partitioning and transformation of diuron in water-sediment systems: Influence of Eichhornia crassipes on contaminant redistribution and metabolite formation.

Aquatic macrophytes can actively reshape contaminant fate in aquatic systems by redistributing chemicals across environmental compartments rather than promoting removal. Herbicides frequently enter aquatic systems through agricultural runoff, leading to accumulation in sediments and interactions with biota. Diuron, a persistent photosystem II inhibitor with strong affinity for organic matrices, is widely detected in aquatic environments and forms transformation products. However, the role of aquatic macrophytes in modulating its environmental fate remains insufficiently understood. Here, water

Involvement of a unique chemodosimeter in the selective estimation of noxious cyanide in common water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes): an environmental refinement.

A naphthaldehyde-pyridoxal conjugated chemodosimeter (NPLC) was developed and employed for the sensitive and selective detection and estimation of cyanide in common water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), a free floating macrophyte used in the phytoremediation process since ancient times. The non-fluorescent nature of the probe NPLC, directed by the possibility of excited state intramolecular proton transfer process (ESIPT), was promptly changed due to CN- induced di-deprotonation of the probe. The naked eye color change and turn on vivid fluorescent color of NPLC was attributed to the inhibiti

Elevated CO₂ and 28-homobrassinolide alleviate galaxolide (HHCB) stress in Eichhornia crassipes via photosynthetic protection and rhizosphere microenvironment modulation.

Elevated CO2 (eCO2), a major driver of climate change, is altering aquatic environments. Meanwhile, galaxolide (HHCB) accumulates in water bodies, threatening aquatic plants. Foliar 28-homobrassinolide (HBL) can enhance plant stress resistance. However, how eCO2 and HBL interact to regulate photosynthesis, carbon allocation, and rhizosphere processes under HHCB stress remains unclear. This study therefore investigated how eCO₂ alone alleviates HHCB stress in Eichhornia crassipes and how the combination of eCO₂ and HBL shifts the plant's defense strategy towards the rhizosphere. Results showed

Physiological and proteomics analyses reveal the mechanism of Eichhornia crassipes tolerance to high-concentration cadmium stress compared with Pistia stratiotes.

Cadmium (Cd) pollution is an environmental problem worldwide. Phytoremediation is a convenient method of removing Cd from both soil and water, but its efficiency is still low, especially in aquatic environments. Scientists have been trying to improve the ability of plants to absorb and accumulate Cd based on interactions between plants and Cd, especially the mechanism by which plants resist Cd. Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes are aquatic plants commonly used in the phytoremediation of heavy metals. In the present study, we conducted physiological and biochemical analyses to compare

The Development of Silver Nanoparticles-Based Colorimetric Uric Acid Detection: An Extension Study of Silver Nanoparticles Extraction from Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes).

This work is an extension of our previous work on UV-assisted green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from water hyacinth leaf extract, which is focused on using their unique biogenic capping layer to mitigate matrix interference in clinical diagnostics. The synthesized AgNPs were evaluated for uric acid (UA) detection and used to fabricate a plasmonic colorimetric biosensing platform. The results show that the biosynthesized AgNPs effectively act as optical signal transducers in an uricase-based enzymatic system, in which the natural capping shield provides excellent electrosteric pro

Chemical composition of invasive water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) impacts developmental stages of Bufotes sitibundus: threat of an invasive plant to the amphibian species.

Invasive species threaten biodiversity by disrupting biological interactions. Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is recognized as one of the world's top 100 weed species and among the ten worst aquatic weeds. This study examines the impact of extracts from this non-native invasive plant on the survival, growth, and metamorphosis of Bufotes sitibundus larvae, a species of anuran amphibian. Due to the presence of phenolic compounds and heavy metals, invasive plants can significantly affect anuran development, yet these threats remain largely unstudied in amphibians. We observed increased mort

Heavy Metal Content of Water Hyacinth (Pontederia (Eichhornia) crassipes) and Its Safe Inclusion Levels in Ruminant, Poultry, and Swine Diets: A Critical Review.

Water hyacinth poses significant environmental challenge in many countries. As part of the effort of reducing its negative effect, there is a great interest to use it as animal feed. However, reports of its safe inclusion level are not consistent. Since the heavy metal content of water hyacinth differed with the water quality it grows in, the safe inclusion level recommendation based on single research results can't be reliable to use widely. This study made a review of the heavy metal content of water hyacinth published to 2025 and presented widely applicable safe inclusion level of water hya
