Isospora borbai n. sp. (Chromista: Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from gnateaters Conopophaga spp. (Passeriformes: Tyranni: Conopophagidae) in South America.

BACKGROUND: The gnateaters Conopophaga spp. are insectivorous passerines commonly observed in high and humid forests, where they remain lodged in thin branches and, sometimes, they fly to the ground to catch insects. The insectivorous feeding habit is related to low prevalence and density of coccidians in passerines; however, several coccidian species are recorded for families of insectivorous passerines. PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine the feces from gnateaters Conopophaga spp. captured in the municipality of Barra Mansa and in the Itatiaia National Park, State of Rio de Janeiro, Southe

The First Isospora Species (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) Described from the Northern Yellow-Shafted Flicker (Colaptes auratus luteus) in Ontario, Canada.

PURPOSE: Members of the genus Isospora commonly infect a wide variety of wild birds. By combining morphometric and genetic data, we are able to differentiate and describe a new apicomplexan parasite, Isospora picoflavae n. sp., from the Northern Yellow-shafted Flicker (Colaptes auratus luteus) in Ontario, Canada. METHODS: Unsporulated oocysts were observed in intestinal contents obtained during necropsy; these oocysts completed exogenous sporulation within 7 days at room temperature. Complete nuclear 18S rDNA and complete mitochondrial genome sequences were obtained from this previously undes

Distribution, redescription, and molecular identification of Isospora striata McQuistion et al. 1997 (Eimeriidae), from woodcreepers (Dendrocolaptidae) in South America.

Woodcreepers are passerines of the family Dendrocolaptidae, which have a high forest dependency. The current work aimed to redescribe Isospora striata McQuistion et al. 1997, from two new hosts in protected areas in Brazil, revealing new localities of parasitism, in addition to providing preliminary genotypic identifications via sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene from both host species. Isospora striata has oocysts that are subspheroidal to ovoidal, 19.4 × 16.8 μm with smooth wall. Oocyst residuum is absent, but micropyle and polar granules are present. S

DESCRIPTION OF A NEW EIMERIA SPECIES (APICOMPLEXA: EIMERIIDAE) RESPONSIBLE FOR CLINICAL COCCIDIOSIS IN COMMERCIAL CHUKAR PARTRIDGE (ALECTORIS CHUKAR).

Recurrent coccidiosis affecting a commercial chukar partridge (Alectoris chukar) farm in Ontario, Canada was investigated. The responsible pathogenic Eimeria species was isolated for biological characterization. The uniformity of oocyst morphometrics supported that only a single Eimeria sp. was present. Experimental infections with coccidia-free chukars were used to describe exogenous and endogenous developmental stages of the parasite. The prepatent period of the causative Eimeria species was 5 days and patency lasted 11 days; fecundity was 1,573 to 30,057, with the highest fecundity recorded

Morphological and molecular characterization of Cystoisospora laidlawi oocysts (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) in farmed American mink (Neovison vison) in Denmark.

From a longitudinal survey conducted on 30 Danish mink farms in 2016, 11.0% of faecal samples (456/4140) were positive for Cystoisospora laidlawi oocysts by microscopy, with 60% (189/315) of mink being positive at least once during the study period. Morphological analysis of sporulated oocysts identified Cystoisospora oocysts measuring 34.3 × 29.5 μm with an oocyst length/width (L/W) ratio of 1.2. The morphological features of the oocysts were identical to Isospora laidlawi previously morphological identified in farmed mink from Denmark and elsewhere. Morphological and molecular identification of Eimeria rajasthani (coccidia: Eimeriidae) in the dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

INTRODUCTION: Coccidiosis is a serious parasitic disease in camels caused by an intestinal protozoan parasite of the genus Eimeria, which is linked to significant causes of reduced milk and meat production. In Saudi Arabia, scare literature focused on the coprological investigation of dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius). To determine the taxonomic status of camel parasite species, we performed morphological characterization of oocysts and genetic analysis (18S rRNA and ITS-1 gene regions) of Eimeria species collected from camels in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A total of 150 faecal sampl

Isospora atticorae n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from the white-thighed swallow Atticora tibialis (Cassin, 1853) (Passeriformes: Passeri: Hirundinidae) in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The diversity of coccidians in Neotropical wild avifauna remains significantly underestimated, particularly within the family Hirundinidae. While cosmopolitan and widely distributed hosts like Hirundo rustica Linnaeus, 1758 dominate the literature with three described Isospora spp., ecological traits of other swallows may drive different parasitic dynamics. This study provides the first integrative characterization of a coccidian parasite from Atticora tibialis (Cassin, 1853), a resident swallow strictly associated with complex and preserved Neotropical forest biomes. METHODS: Fec

Hepatic coccidiosis in Bagre Bagre (Linnaeus, 1766) from the Brazilian Amazon Region Caused by Calyptospora Matosi n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae).

PURPOSE: Coccidia (Coccidiasina) is a subclass of Apicomplexa, known to cause gastrointestinal diseases in animals. Although its importance is recognized, there are few taxonomic studies of coccidia in fish, especially in biomes with high diversity, such as the Brazilian Amazon. Therefore, the present study investigated infections by coccidian microparasites found in the hepatic region of the Coco sea catfish, Bagre bagre. METHODS: Parasitological analyses were performed on 50 specimens of B. bagre collected in Bragança and Curuça, in northern Brazil, between January and December 2021. RESUL

Coccidia of New World passerine birds (Aves: Passeriformes): a review of Eimeria Schneider, 1875 and Isospora Schneider, 1881 (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae).

In the New World, the avian order Passeriformes comprises 47 families and 2,453 species, yet to date only 21 (45%) of the families and 58 (2%) of the species have been examined for coccidia, and from these only two species of Eimeria Schneider, 1875 and 81 species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 have been described. This review contributes to our understanding of the morphology and systematics of coccidian parasites of passeriforms, providing a scientific basis for the identification of sporulated oöcysts recovered from the faeces of passerine birds from North, Central and South America. Isospora plectrophenaxia n. sp (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae), a new coccidian parasite found in Snow Bunting (Plectrophenax nivalis) nestlings on Spitsbergen.

Faecal samples were collected from four 8 days old snow bunting nestlings from one nest in Ny-Alesund, Spitsbergen, in summer 2006. After sporulation, samples were examined for coccidian parasites using flotation centrifuging. We found isosporan oocysts in three birds, intensity of infection varied between individuals from 35 to 6,000 oocysts per defecation. All oocysts belonged to one species, which is described here as a new species. The spherical or subspherical oocysts (Fig. 1) have a brownish, smooth, relatively thin (about 1.1 microm) bilayered wall. Average size of sporulated oocysts wa
