Anticipating El Niño-related health risks in Latin America and the Caribbean: from climate information to public health preparedness.

El Niño is a recurrent mode of tropical Pacific climate variability with major public health implications for Latin America and the Caribbean. Its development is partly driven by the Bjerknes feedback, a coupled ocean-atmosphere process in which weakened equatorial trade winds reduce coastal upwelling and allow warm surface waters to shift eastward. Warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific can reshape regional rainfall and temperature patterns, increasing the likelihood of floods, droughts, wildfires, food-system disruption, and health-service interruption in locations with establis

Effects of climate-change-driven gradual and acute temperature changes on shark and ray species.

Climate change is altering distributions and abundances of marine species through both gradual and acute changes in temperature and productivity. Due to their high mobility and metabolic rates, elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) are likely to redistribute across latitudes and depths as they thermoregulate, but little is known about their responses to these climatic changes, which could vary widely across this diverse group of species. Here, we assessed how species with differing mobility and ecology responded to gradual changes in daily sea surface temperature (SST) and acute temperature anomalie

The cholera epidemic in Yemen - How did it start? The role of El Niño conditions followed by regional winds.

The largest cholera epidemic of modern times began during the autumn of 2016 in Yemen, under ongoing war conditions. What exactly caused the epidemic to emerge is unclear. It is suggested that a combination of the impact of the strong El Niño of 2015-16 on cholera incidence in Somalia, followed by southwestern winds over the Gulf of Aden throughout the summer of 2016, contributed to the disease spreading through dissemination of cholera-contaminated flying insects (chironomids) from the Horn of Africa to Yemen.

Atypical Red Blood Cells Are Prevalent in California Sea Lion Pups Born during Anomalous Sea Surface Temperature Events.

To date, there is limited knowledge of the effects that abnormal sea surface temperature (SST) can have on the physiology of neonate pinnipeds. However, maternal nutritional deficiencies driven by alimentary restrictions would expectedly impact pinniped development and fitness, as an adequate supply of nutrients is essential for growth and proper functioning of all body systems, including red blood cell synthesis and clearance. Here, we investigated red blood cell morphology of California sea lion (CSL) pups from the San Benito Archipelago born during the 2014 and 2015 anomalously high SST eve

Stress responsiveness in a wild primate predicts survival across an extreme El Niño drought.

We know more about the costs of chronic stress than the benefits of the acute stress response-an adaptive response that buffers organisms from life-threatening challenges. As yet, no primate study has empirically identified how the stress response adaptively affects evolutionary fitness. Here, we take advantage of a natural experiment-an El Niño drought-that produced unprecedented mortality for wild white-faced capuchins. Using a reaction norm approach, we provide evidence from primates that a more robust stress response to a challenge, measured using fecal glucocorticoids, predicts a greater

El Niño southern oscillation, weather patterns, and bacillary dysentery in the Yangtze River Basin, China.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly intense weather anomalies associated with interannual climate variability patterns, like El Niño-southern oscillation (ENSO), could exacerbate the occurrence and transmission of infectious diseases. However, research in China remains limited in understanding the impacts and intermediate weather changes of ENSO on bacillary dysentery (BD). This study aimed to reveal the relationship between ENSO, weather conditions, and the incidence of BD, and to identify the potential meteorological pathways moderated by ENSO in the ENSO-BD connections. METHODS: BD disease data and m

The effect of El Niño and La Niña episodes on the existing niche and potential distribution of vector and host species of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease transmitted to humans by a protozoan parasite through sandfly vectors and multiple vertebrate hosts. The Pan American Health Organization reported a declining trend in cases, with Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Nicaragua, and Bolivia having the most cases in 2020. There are still knowledge gaps in transmission and the parasite-host relationship. Ecological niche modeling has been used to study host-vector relationships, disease dynamics, and the impact of climate change. Understanding these aspects can aid in early surveillance and vector control strategies. The po

Unexpected limitation of tropical cyclone genesis by subsurface tropical central-north Pacific during El Niño.

The vast tropical Pacific is home to the majority of tropical cyclones (TCs) which threaten the rim countries every year. The TC genesis is nourished by warm sea surface temperatures (SSTs). During El Niño, the western Pacific warm pool extends eastward. However, the number of TCs does not increase significantly with the expanding warm pool and it remains comparable between El Niño and La Niña. Here, we show that the subsurface heat content change counteracts the favorable SSTs in the tropical central-north Pacific. Due to the anomalous positive wind stress curl, the 26 °C isotherm shoals duri

Potential distribution of four vectors of American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: The effect of El Niño and La Niña episodes from the perspective of the ecological niche.

The potential distribution of four American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis vectors under average conditions during Neutral (in between episodes), El Niño, and La Niña episodes from 2000 to 2018 were constructed through ecological niche modeling. The potential distribution in El Niño and La Niña were compared with the Neutral distribution. The four vector species (Lutzomyia gomezi, Lutzomyia ovallesi, Lutzomyia panamensis, and Lutzomyia trapidoi) decreased the potential distribution with the occurrence of El Niño and La Niña episodes. During El Niño, the reduction was concentrated over the dry ecosyst

Deconstructing the spatial effects of El Niño and vulnerability on cholera rates in Peru: Wavelet and GIS analyses.

This study examined the spatial effects of El Niño and vulnerability on cholera in Peru across the epidemic period of 1991 to 1998. Using Wavelet and GIS analyses, relationships between sea surface temperatures and department-level cholera rates were estimated. In addition, we constructed composite indices to assess spatial vulnerability during the 1997-98 extreme El Niño. The findings demonstrated strong temporal connections in 1997-98, most evident in northern Peru, and less clear connections from 1991-93. Spatially, we found patterns of difference, greater cholera risk in northern coastal P

Global Disease Outbreaks Associated with the 2015-2016 El Niño Event.

Interannual climate variability patterns associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon result in climate and environmental anomaly conditions in specific regions worldwide that directly favor outbreaks and/or amplification of variety of diseases of public health concern including chikungunya, hantavirus, Rift Valley fever, cholera, plague, and Zika. We analyzed patterns of some disease outbreaks during the strong 2015-2016 El Niño event in relation to climate anomalies derived from satellite measurements. Disease outbreaks in multiple El Niño-connected regions worldwide (includin

A differential effect of Indian ocean dipole and El Niño on cholera dynamics in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: A stationary (i.e., constant through time) association between El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and epidemics of cholera in Bangladesh has been widely assumed. However, whether or not elements of the local climate that are relevant for cholera transmission have stationary signatures of the IOD on their dynamics over different time scales is still not clear. Here we report results on the time-varying relationships between the various remote and local environmental drivers and cholera incidence in Bangladesh. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We perfo

From El Niño forecasts to proportionate public health action: a forecast-to-action framework for climate-related health risks.

El Niño creates an important opportunity for anticipatory public health action because its development can often be detected before many downstream hazards emerge. Yet predictability does not transfer uniformly from the large-scale El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal to regional climate anomalies and ultimately to health outcomes. This Perspective proposes a locally adaptable forecast-to-action framework that distinguishes three levels of predictability: ENSO prediction, regional and local climate prediction, and health-risk prediction. We argue that an El Niño forecast should initiate

The burden of El Niño-Southern Oscillation-related dengue attributable to anthropogenic climate change: a multicountry modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is known to be associated with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) but the size of the effect is unclear, as is the influence of anthropogenic climate change (ACC). We aimed to quantify the associations between ENSO and dengue risk in 21 countries, and to estimate the contribution of ACC to the ENSO-related dengue burden. METHODS: We collected monthly dengue cases and observed and simulated climate data from 21 countries including 1237 locations from 2000 to 2019. We characterised Eastern Pacific (EP) and Central Pacific (CP) ENSO exposures for each location based on the E

Changes of upper ocean disturbance caused by tropical cyclones in the Western North Pacific main development region (1993-2021).

During the passage of tropical cyclones (TCs) cause severe disturbances in the upper ocean, especially the TC main development region (MDR) (5°-23°N, 127°-160°E) in the Western North Pacific. The main attributes affecting the upper ocean disturbance were selected and weighted by the CRITIC weight method. An upper ocean disturbance (UOD) index with TCs intensity factors (MSW, Vh), ocean dynamic factors (SSC, RV, EPV) and ocean thermal factors (ΔSST, ΔMLD) was established. The change of UOD index in different time scales was analyzed by calculating each TC accumulation, monthly accumulation, and

Dengue incidence and its relationship with El Niño oceanic index, as a sensitive variable to anticipate outbreaks in the Colombian Caribbean region.

INTRODUCTION: The Lancet Countdown 2023 report for Latin America indicates that rising temperatures influence the transmission of the dengue virus. In Colombia’s Caribbean region, a significant association has been identified between dengue incidence and climatic variables, such as temperature, humidity, and precipitation. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relationship between the incidence of dengue and the oceanic Niño index in the departments of the Colombian Caribbean region from 2021 to 2023. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An ecological time series study was conducted using distributed lag non-linear m

The interrelationship between meteorological parameters and leptospirosis incidence in Hambantota district, Sri Lanka 2008-2017 and practical implications.

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonosis. Leptospirosis incidence (LI) in Sri Lanka is high. Infected animals pass leptospires to the environment with their urine. Leprospires' survival in the environment to infect a new host depends on meteorological factors. El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) modulate the weather in Sri Lanka. OBJECTIVES: The determination of interrelationship between the LI in the Hambantota District, and local meteorological parameters, ENSO and IOD. METHODS: We acquired notified leptospirosis cases in the Hambantota District and p

El Niño-Southern Oscillation, local weather and occurrences of dengue virus serotypes.

Severe dengue fever is usually associated with secondary infection by a dengue virus (DENV) serotype (1 to 4) that is different to the serotype of the primary infection. Dengue outbreaks only occur following importations of DENV in Cairns, Australia. However, the majority of imported cases do not result in autochthonous transmission in Cairns. Although DENV transmission is strongly associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate cycle and local weather conditions, the frequency and potential risk factors of infections with the different DENV serotypes, including whether or not

El Niño and La Niña differentially drive transmission dynamics of the small ruminant parasite Haemonchus contortus across agroecological zones in Southern Africa.

The El Niño La Niña Southern Oscillation (ENSO) exerts a significant influence on agroecological environments and plays a crucial role in influencing crop productivity, yet its impact on animal diseases has been largely overlooked, despite the evident impact of climate on disease transmission. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ENSO on the transmission potential (Q0) of Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) across agroecological zones (AEZs) in southern Africa across the region's typical rainy season (November-April). Key results indicate that stronger El Niño events can significantly de
