A superelastic titanium alloy showing nearly temperature-independent high strength and elastic modulus.

Lightweight superelastic alloys with temperature-insensitive properties are critical for deep-space exploration devices, yet their development is hindered by the challenge of simultaneously balancing strength, recoverable strain, and temperature sensitivity. Here, we overcome these limitations in a Ti50.5Zr40Nb6Sn2O1.5 alloy through Zr/O co-doping to induce local chemical orders (LCOs). This strategy yields an unprecedented combination of large recovery strain (εr > 4.5%), high superelastic stress (σc > 700 MPa), nearly temperature-independent strength (dσc/dT ≈ 0.59 MPa·K⁻¹), and stable elast

Brillouin microscopy of collagen crosslinking: noncontact depth-dependent analysis of corneal elastic modulus.

PURPOSE: Corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) is designed to halt the progression of keratoconus and corneal ectasia by inducing corneal stiffening. However, it currently is difficult to monitor and evaluate CXL outcome objectively due to the lack of suitable methods to characterize corneal mechanical properties. We validated noncontact Brillouin microscopy to quantify corneal mechanical properties before and after CXL. METHODS: CXL was performed on fresh porcine eyes using various presoaking times and light doses, with or without epithelial debridement. From Brillouin maps of corneal elastic

Increased Elasticity Modulus of Polymeric Materials Is a Source of Surface Alterations in the Human Body.

The introduction of alloplastic materials (meshes) in hernia surgery has improved patient outcome by a radical reduction of hernia recurrence rate, but discussion about the biocompatibility of these implanted materials continues since observations of surface alterations of polypropylene and other alloplastic materials were published. This study intends to investigate if additives supplemented to alloplastic mesh materials merge into the solution and become analyzable. Four polypropylene and one polyester alloplastic material were incubated in different media for three weeks: distilled water, s

A Piezoelectric Microtool for In Vitro Elastic Modulus Measurement and Hepatocellular Carcinoma Boundary Identification.

Accurate identification of tumor boundaries is crucial for effective local treatment and protection of surrounding healthy tissue. However, current methods for rapidly characterizing local tissue biomechanical properties remain limited. In this study, we present a novel MEMS-integrated piezoelectric sensor-based medical microtool (IPS-MMT), this device can map the elastic modulus of local tissues in real time and at the sub-millimeter scale, enabling rapid and localized measurements under controlled in vitro conditions. Our device features the integration of a 100 µm‑thick piezoelectric sensor

The effect of three-dimensional postural change on shear elastic modulus of the iliotibial band.

To understand and treat iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome, caused by excessive compression between the ITB and lateral femoral condyle, it is important to identify factors contributing to an increase in ITB stiffness. The purpose of this study was to clarify the factors that contribute to an increase in ITB stiffness by examining the relationship between three-dimensional postural changes and ITB stiffness. Fourteen healthy individuals performed one-leg standing under 7 conditions (including normal one-leg standing as a control condition) in which the pelvic position was changed in three planes.

Intraoperative measurement of the elastic modulus of the vocal fold. Part 1. Device development.

Although the concept of manipulating laryngeal biomechanics to improve vocal function is not new, there has been a recent proliferation in surgical techniques used to affect laryngeal function. These include methods which increase the stiffness of the vocal folds, medialize the vocal folds, alter the pitch by changing the tension of the vocal folds, and augment the tissues using injection of alloplastic materials. Despite these new and possibly revolutionary methods, no means are presently available to surgeons to intraoperatively evaluate and optimize results of a surgical intervention. This

3d elastic-modulus imaging using ultrasound linear arrays and efficient data-driven training strategies.

We are developing ultrasonic-based techniques for elastic modulus imaging throughout a tissue volume using the autoprogressive (AutoP) method with linear array transducers. AutoP discovers the constitutive properties of media by estimating the stress and strain in a volume from force-displacement measurements recorded in planes. AutoP is a data-driven machine learning technique that combines shallow neural network structures with object-specific measurements, in stark contrast with traditional deep learning techniques. In this paper, we outline a strategy for acquiring measurements from a seri

Validation of Ultrasound-Based Muscle Elastic Modulus Estimation in a Healthy Human Volunteer Model.

INTRODUCTION: Measurement of muscle compartment pressure can be important in clinical scenarios such as diagnosing acute compartment syndrome; the gold standard is invasive and costly pressure-transducer measurement. Past studies have shown the promise of ultrasound (US) as a diagnostic adjunct by measuring the elastic modulus of the muscle while it is being compressed by a US probe (compression sonography). However, the reliability of compression sonography in multiple muscle locations has not been previously examined. This study aimed to test the reliability and validity of compression sonog

Elastic modulus of hydrogel regulates osteogenic differentiation via liquid-liquid phase separation of YAP.

Craniofacial bone defects induced by congenital malformations, trauma, or diseases frequently challenge the orthodontic or restorative treatment. Stem cell-based bone regenerative approaches emerged as a promising method to resolve bone defects. Microenvironment physical cues, such as the matrix elastic modulus or matrix topography, regulate stem cell differentiation via multiple genes. We constructed gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), a well-known scaffold, to investigate the impact of elastic modulus on osteogenic differentiation in a three-dimensional environment. Confocal microscope was used to

Internal strain estimation for quantification of human heel pad elastic modulus: A phantom study.

Shock absorption is the most important function of the human heel pad. However, changes in heel pad elasticity, as seen in e.g. long-distance runners, diabetes patients, and victims of Falanga torture are affecting this function, often in a painful manner. Assessment of heel pad elasticity is usually based on one or a few strain measurements obtained by an external load-deformation system. The aim of this study was to develop a technique for quantitative measurements of heel pad elastic modulus based on several internal strain measures from within the heel pad by use of ultrasound images. Nine

Evaluation of nanohardness, elastic modulus, and surface roughness of fluoride-releasing tooth colored restorative materials.

Recently, interest in tooth-colored fluoride-releasing dental materials has increased. Although physical and mechanical properties such as surface hardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of the restorative materials have been investigated, the effect of different immersion media on these properties is still controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nanohardness, elastic modulus and surface roughness of the fluoride release of tooth-colored restorative materials after immersion in acidic beverages. Prepared samples of three restorative materials (a highly viscous glass io

Multiscale Elastic Modulus Characterization of Ti0.5Fe0.45Mn0.05, an Iron-Titanium-Manganese Alloy Dedicated to Hydrogen Storage.

Hydrogen storage in intermetallic compounds, known as solid-state storage, relies on a phase change by the metal alloy. This phenomenon causes a violent change in volume at the crystalline scale, inducing a change of volume for the millimetric particles and, with time, important stresses on the tanks. It is thus necessary to know the mechanical behavior of the material to report these phenomena and improve the tanks' reliability. The present study deals with the mechanical characterization of Ti0.5Fe0.45Mn0.05 alloy at different scales. First, the elastic modulus was measured by compression te

Atomic Force Microscopy Micro-Indentation Methods for Determining the Elastic Modulus of Murine Articular Cartilage.

The mechanical properties of biological tissues influence their function and can predict degenerative conditions before gross histological or physiological changes are detectable. This is especially true for structural tissues such as articular cartilage, which has a primarily mechanical function that declines after injury and in the early stages of osteoarthritis. While atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to test the elastic modulus of articular cartilage before, there is no agreement or consistency in methodologies reported. For murine articular cartilage, methods differ in two major

In Vitro-Induced High Sugar Environments Deteriorate Human Cortical Bone Elastic Modulus and Fracture Toughness.

Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) have been suggested to contribute to bone fragility in type 2 diabetes (T2D). AGEs can be induced through in vitro sugar incubations but there is limited data on the effect of total fluorescent AGEs on mechanical properties of human cortical bone, which may have altered characteristics in T2D. Thus, to examine the effect of AGEs on bone directly in T2D patients with uncontrolled sugar levels, it is essential to first understand the fundamental mechanisms by studying the effects of controlled in vitro-induced AGEs on cortical bone mechanical behavior. Here

[Elastic modulus measured by spherical indentation used toward the clinical application of the brain stiffness].

OBJECTIVE: Palpation of brain stiffness is one of techniques that leads to successful neurosurgical procedures. In order to evaluate brain stiffness quantitatively, we studied the potential clinical applicability of a spherical indenting tactile sensor. METHODS: The sensor had a spherical rigid indenter (diameter=5.0 mm; contact pressure=1.0 gf/mm2), and the indenter was rapidly pushed and pulled at a constant speed by a computer-controlled motor. The pressure-depth hysteresis curve was obtained using the sensor, and the shear elastic modulus (G) was calculated on the basis of the Hertz conta

Resolving the Strength-Modulus-Elasticity Tradeoff in Elastomers Using Dual Phase-Separated Nanodomains.

Achieving elastomers that simultaneously combine ultrahigh strength, high modulus, and excellent elasticity remains a longstanding challenge because these properties are intrinsically conflicting. Here, we report a dual phase-separated nanodomain strategy that resolves this trade-off by transforming reversible cross-links into spatially confined reinforcing nanodomains. Elastomers are fabricated via copolymerization of rigid aromatic polyurea segments with flexible poly(urethane-urea) chains containing acylsemicarbazide moieties. The resulting elastomers exhibit an exceptional combination of m

The higher cellular elastic modulus of the nucleus pulposus with degenerative changes in the cervical intervertebral discs.

PURPOSE: Our study aims to explore the association between the elastic modulus of nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs) and degenerative changes in the cervical intervertebral discs (IVDs). METHODS: Primary human NPCs were isolated from 21 degenerative IVDs that underwent anterior cervical decompression and fusion. The clinical degeneration degree of IVDs were assessed by a qualitative approach based on MRIs and a quantitative method based on the radiographs after all elastic modulus of NPCs were measured. On the basis of the degree of cervical IVDs degeneration, subjects were divided into mild (n = 6

Mechanics of ascending aortic aneurysms based on a modulus of elasticity dependent on aneurysm diameter and pressure.

The mechanical stresses and strains are examined, in ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (aTAA) models, in a patient-specific aTAA as well as in healthy thoracic aortic models, via Finite Element Analysis. The aneurysms are assumed spherical, 1.5 mm thick, with diameters between 47 mm and 80 mm, eccentrically positioned. The geometry and wall thickness distribution of the aorta along its length are based on open literature data for an average patient age of 66.25 years, accounting for the Body Surface Area (BSA) parameter. The vessel wall material is assumed isotropic and incompressible, with i
