Current state of elastography research in multiple anatomical structures and respective phantoms.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound elastography (USE) has gained significant attention in recent years as a non-invasive method for assessing tissue elasticity, offering the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy. With the quick development of this technique, there is a growing demand for calibrated phantoms to validate elastography systems. Therefore, the aim of this review was to provide insights into the current state of elastography research in multiple anatomical structures, which include: liver, breast, prostate, kidneys, blood vessels, heart, eyes, brain, muscles, tendons, and respective phantoms.

Review of MR elastography applications and recent developments.

The technique of MR elastography (MRE) has emerged as a useful modality for quantitatively imaging the mechanical properties of soft tissues in vivo. Recently, MRE has been introduced as a clinical tool for evaluating chronic liver disease, but many other potential applications are being explored. These applications include measuring tissue changes associated with diseases of the liver, breast, brain, heart, and skeletal muscle including both focal lesions (e.g., hepatic, breast, and brain tumors) and diffuse diseases (e.g., fibrosis and multiple sclerosis). The purpose of this review article

Immersion ultrasound improves the repeatability of shear-wave elastography for measuring median nerve elasticity.

OBJECTIVE: To study the factors that influence the measurement of median nerve elasticity, to provide a more reproducible test for the assessment of median nerve elasticity using shear wave elasticity (SWE), and to reduce operator empirical dependence. To compare the repeatability of the median nerve elasticity measurement using immersion SWE with that using contact SWE, analyze the factors affecting SWE measurement, and provide a more repeatable method for doctors without SWE operation experience. METHODS: Two doctors without SWE operation experience measured the median nerve mean elastic mo

Differentiation of bladder cancer with water flow elastography (WaFE).

Cancer affects the mechanical properties of tissue. Therefore, elastography techniques can be used to differentiate cancerous from healthy tissue. Due to probe size and restricted handling, most elastography techniques are not applicable in minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Established techniques such as endoscopic ultrasound elastography measure under undefined boundary conditions, making the determination of quantitative mechanical properties challenging. Water flow elastography (WaFE) has recently been introduced for application in MIS. Here, we present an improved WaFE measurement method i

Validation of Volumetric Multifrequency Shear Wave Vibro-Elastography With Matrix Array Transducer for the In Vivo Liver.

Three-dimensional shear wave absolute vibro-elastography (S-WAVE) is a steady-state, volumetric elastography imaging technique similar to magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), with the additional advantage of multifrequency imaging and a significantly shorter examination time. We present a novel ultrasound matrix array implementation of S-WAVE for high-volume refresh rate acquisition. This new imaging setup is equipped with real-time shear wave monitoring for an improved data collection workflow and image quality. The image processing and elasticity reconstruction pipeline is tailored for hig

Shear wave elastography primer for the abdominal radiologist.

PURPOSE: Shear wave elastography (SWE) provides a means for adding information about the mechanical properties of tissues to a diagnostic ultrasound examination. It is important to understand the physics and methods by which the measurements are made to aid interpretation of the results as they relate to disease processes. METHODS: The components of how ultrasound is used to generate shear waves and make measurements of the induced motion are reviewed. The physics of shear wave propagation are briefly described for elastic and viscoelastic tissues. Additionally, shear wave propagation in homo

Effect of interstitial fluid pressure on shear wave elastography: an experimental and computational study.

Objective. An elevated interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) can lead to strain-induced stiffening of poroelastic biological tissues. As shear wave elastography (SWE) measures functional tissue stiffness based on the propagation speed of acoustically induced shear waves, the shear wave velocity (SWV) can be used as an indirect measurement of the IFP. The underlying biomechanical principle for this stiffening behavior with pressurization is however not well understood, and we therefore studied how IFP affects SWV through SWE experiments and numerical modeling.Approach. Forward-scanning endoscopic optical coherence elastography for elasticity measurements of anisotropic tissues.

The elasticity of luminal tissues is closely associated with disease progression and functional status. Endoscopic optical coherence elastography (OCE) has emerged as a promising technique for assessing the mechanical properties of luminal tissues. However, previous endoscopic OCE approaches typically measure elasticity along only a single direction-either laterally or in depth-thereby potentially leading to an inaccurate estimation of anisotropic tissue mechanics. In this study, we propose a forward-scanning endoscopic OCE method that enables quantitative measurement of tissue elasticity in b

The Geometric Dependence of Wave Velocity in Carotid Arteries: Phantom and Finite Element Study and Implications for Vascular "Shear Wave" Elastography.

OBJECTIVE: The intrinsic elasticity and the structural stiffness of blood vessels are widely regarded as important biomarkers for prediction of cardiovascular disease risk, the leading cause of death worldwide. Ultrasound-based shear wave elastography (SWE) has been used to measure these properties in several clinical studies. However, the geometric properties of blood vessels complicate the relationship between wave speed and elasticity in blood vessels compared to bulk tissue. Here we quantify these effects with a semi-analytical finite element (SAFE) model and ultrasound experiments and dis

Optical coherence elastography under homolateral parallel acoustic radiation force excitation for ocular elasticity quantification.

Alteration in the elastic properties of biological tissues may indicate changes in the structure and components. Acoustic radiation force optical coherence elastography (ARF-OCE) can assess the elastic properties of the ocular tissues non-invasively. However, coupling the ultrasound beam and the optical beam remains challenging. In this Letter, we proposed an OCE method incorporating homolateral parallel ARF excitation for measuring the elasticity of the ocular tissues. An acoustic-optic coupling unit was established to reflect the ultrasound beam while transmitting the light beam. The ARF exc

Development of an anatomical breast phantom from polyvinyl chloride plastisol with lesions of various shape, elasticity and echogenicity for teaching ultrasound examination.

PURPOSE: The WHO reported an increasing trend in the number of new cases of breast cancer, making it the most prevalent cancer in the world. This fact necessitates the availability of highly qualified ultrasonographers, which can be achieved by the widespread implementation of training phantoms. The goal of the present work is to develop and test an inexpensive, accessible, and reproducible technology for creating an anatomical breast phantom for practicing ultrasound diagnostic skills in grayscale and elastography imaging, as well as ultrasound-guided biopsy sampling. METHODS: We used FDM 3D

Viscoelastic model characterization of human cervical tissue by torsional waves.

The understanding of changes in the viscoelastic properties of cervical tissue during the gestation process is a challenging problem. In this work, we explore the importance of considering the multilayer nature (epithelial and connective layers) of human cervical tissue for characterizing the viscoelastic parameters from torsional waves. For this purpose, torsional wave propagations are simulated in three multilayer cervical tissue models (pure elastic, Kelvin-Voigt (KV) and Maxwell) using the finite difference time domain method. High-speed camera measurements have been carried out in tissue-

Shear wave elastography of the median nerve: A mechanical study.

BACKGROUND: Shear wave elastography (SWE) shows promise in peripheral neuropathy evaluation but has potential limitations due to tissue size and heterogeneity. We tested SWE sensitivity to elasticity change and the effect of probe position in a median nerve cadaver model. METHODS: Ten specimens were used to measure median nerve elasticity under increasing loads using SWE and indentation. Measurements were compared using repeated-measures analysis of variance. RESULTS: Indentation and SWE-based longitudinal nerve elasticity increased with tensile loading (P < .01), showing a similar relations

A surface wave elastography technique for measuring tissue viscoelastic properties.

A surface wave elastography method is proposed to study the viscoelastic properties of skin by measuring the surface wave speed and attenuation on the skin. Experiments were carried out on porcine skin tissues. The surface wave speed is measured by the change of phase with distance. The wave attenuation is measured by the decay of wave amplitude with distance. The change of viscoelastic properties with temperature was studied at room and body temperatures. The wave speed was 1.83m/s at 22°C but reduced to 1.52m/s at 33°C. The viscoelastic ratio was almost constant from 22°C to 33°C. Fresh and
