The lateral and medial epicondylitis is often manifested in a professional or in a sport context leading to repetitive wrist movements. The diagnosis is primarily clinical. Additional tests are indicated in chronic evolution and in searching for differential diagnoses. Elbow X-ray can be completed with ultrasound or MRI, the most efficient but expensive diagnostic procedure. There is no consensus on treatment. After a period of rest, stretching then strengthening exercises are recommended. Corticosteroid injections may provide a short-term beneficial effect. Platelet-Rich Plasma injections hav

This symposium of the French Arthroscopic Society is the 2005 state of the art of elbow arthrosocpy in France. A survey reports 499 cases during 2 years with a rate of complication higher than the arthroscopies of other joints (6% of minor and 1% of major complications). The main indication is the removal of loose bodies. They can come from arthritis, chondromatosis, osteochondritis or fracture. The most accurate radiologic examination is an arthroCTscan. The main pronostic factor is the cartilage status. Arthrolysis is the second indication. We performed a retrospective and a prospective stud

An understanding of elbow instability is predicated on knowledge of the anatomy of the lateral collateral ligament complex and of the mechanism and kinematics of elbow subluxation and dislocation. The lateral collateral ligament complex is the key structure involved in recurrent elbow instability and it is virtually always disrupted in elbow dislocations that result from a fall. The ulnar part of the lateral collateral ligament complex (also known as lateral ulnar collateral ligament) is the critical portion of the ligament complex securing the ulna to the humerus and preventing posterolateral

The term "tennis elbow" has been used in the medical literature for over 100 years to describe a variety of conditions on the lateral aspect of the elbow. Recent writers seem to agree that the two most common causes for this condition, which may be either distinct or coexisting, are lateral epicondylitis and radial tunnel syndrome. Lateral epicondylitis is not limited to tennis players; 95% of the reported cases occur in non-players. The presenting symptoms are pain over the origin of the extensor carpi radialis brevis and weakness in the wrist and digital extensors. The location of maximal te

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a common condition of the elbow resulting from overuse during athletic or occupational activity. Functionally, it is a tendinitis of the origin of the forearm extensor muscle mass. Diagnosis is mainly based on symptoms and signs, including lateral elbow pain during twisting and gripping and tenderness at the lateral forearm exacerbated by stress testing of the forearm extensors. Comprehensive treatment should include rest, use of ice, antiinflammatory drug therapy, use of sleep-cycle modifiers, and sometimes surgery in otherwise unresponsive cases.

Tennis elbow is an inflammation and/or rupture of the extensor aponeurosis at or about the lateral epicondyle. Relief of inflammation, improvement of strength, endurance, and flexibility of the injured extensor muscle unit, and diminution of the force loads in most instances will relieve symptoms.

The evidence that tennis elbow is caused by poor muscle strength and improper tennis stroke is strong. The lesion may be at the lateral epicondyle (70 to 80% of patients), at the musculotendinous junction at the level of the radial head or, rarely, at the medial condyle. Anti-inflammatory steroid injections in the condylar lesions are helpful. Sinusoidal wave stimulation of the affected muscles, or repetitive active wrist dorsiflexion, is important in the early stages. The recurrence rate drops sharply when patients adhere to a progressive exercise program.

Elbow arthroplasty is a rare treatment option and is primarily used to treat distal humeral fractures that are not amenable to open reduction and internal fixation, as well as degenerative and inflammatory arthritis. In Denmark, treatment has been centralised since 2008 to three specialised university hospitals to ensure a high quality of treatment. Elbow arthroplasty generally yields good functional and patient-reported outcomes, but with high rates of revision and complications. The current literature remains limited, particularly in terms of long-term outcomes.

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is characterized by pain at the origin of the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ERCB) muscle from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus. A connection was found between tennis elbow and repetitive load in this area. In patients who suffer from elbow pain, tennis elbow is the most common cause, affecting 1-3% of the adult population each year. The diagnosis of tennis elbow is mainly clinical, based on medical history and physical examination. There are several possible treatments ranging from anti-inflammatory drugs and physiotherapy to various local injections

The elbow joint consists of the humeroulnar, humeroradial, and proximal radioulnar joints. Elbow stability is maintained by a combination of static and dynamic constraints. Elbow fractures are challenging to treat because the articular surfaces must be restored perfectly and associated soft tissue injuries must be recognized and appropriately managed. Most elbow fractures are best treated operatively with restoration of normal bony anatomy and rigid internal fixation and repair and/or reconstruction of the collateral ligaments. Advanced imaging, improved understanding of the complex anatomy of

Overuse injuries of the lateral and medial elbow are common in sport, recreational activities, and occupational endeavors. They are commonly diagnosed as lateral and medial epicondylitis; however, the pathophysiology of these disorders demonstrates a lack of inflammation. Instead, angiofibroblastic degeneration is present, referred to as tendinosis. As such, a more appropriate terminology for these conditions is epicondylosis. This is a clinical diagnosis, and further investigations are only performed to rule out other clinical entities after conventional therapy has failed. Yet, most patients

Elbow replacement or arthroplasty is a good therapeutic option for a large percentage of patients with significant joint destruction. However, many orthopaedic surgeons are no familiar with the surgical approaches or techniques associated with elbow replacement implants. Furthermore, the incidence of complications is higher than in other joint replacements, the most important being infections, mechanical failure, cubital neuropathy, and problems with the triceps. For these reasons, the use of bone arthroplasty in Spain may be less than ideal. Although, inflammatory arthritic diseases, such as

Pain and disability in the elbow are not as common as in the neck, shoulder or wrist, for example. The elbow may, however, present disorders that may in a prolonged state be difficult and cause significant loss of working capacity. These include epicondylitis, osteoarthritis and entrapment of the ulnar nerve.

Arthroscopy of the elbow was originally considered to be an unsafe procedure because of the small size of the elbow joint capsule and its proximity to several crucial neurovascular structures. Over the past decade, however, the procedure has become safer and more effective. These improvements can be attributed to a better understanding of elbow anatomy and of the disorders about the elbow as well as to advances in arthroscopic equipment and surgical technique. The most common indications for elbow arthroscopy include removal of loose bodies, synovectomy, débridement and/or excision of osteophy

Patients with elbow arthritis typically present with complaints of pain and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common cause of elbow arthritis, followed by posttraumatic arthritis and primary osteoarthritis. Nonoperative management consisting of oral analgesics, intra-articular steroid injections, physical therapy, and splinting may provide symptomatic relief in the majority of patients. If these modalities fail, operative treatment is guided by the severity of disease as well as several patient-related factors such as age, activity level, and expectations. Total elbow arthroplasty ca

The elbow is a commonly injured joint, yet physicians may be less comfortable treating injuries to the elbow compared with knee and shoulder injuries. Common injuries involving the elbow are tendinosis, instability, tendon ruptures, osteochondritis dissecans, and fractures. Tendinosis is a common overuse injury and may occur on the lateral, medial, or infrequently, the posterior side of the elbow. Injury to the medial or lateral ulnar collateral ligaments may result in instability. Repetitive trauma from overuse is the most common etiologic factor in athletes. Distal biceps and triceps tendon
