Baroreflex activation therapy through electrical carotid sinus stimulation.

An imbalance between cardiovascular parasympathetic and sympathetic activity towards sympathetic predominance has been implicated in the pathogenesis of treatment-resistant arterial hypertension and heart failure. Arterial baroreceptors control efferent cardiovascular autonomic activity and have, therefore, been recognized as potential treatment targets. Baroreflex activation therapy through electrical carotid sinus stimulation is a device-based approach to modulate cardiovascular autonomic activity. Electrical carotid sinus stimulation lowered blood pressure in various hypertensive animal mod

Electrical stimulation in the therapy of dysphagia: current knowledge - a narrative review.

Dysphagia, a sensorimotor disorder impairing swallowing, affects millions globally, compromising quality of life and increasing risks of malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, and healthcare costs. Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) is an emerging adjunctive therapy delivering low-frequency electrical impulses to stimulate swallowing muscles, enhancing strength, coordination, and neuroplasticity. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on NMES efficacy in dysphagia treatment across pediatric and adult populations, emphasizing muscle-specific outcomes and translational myology applicat

Gastric electrical stimulation: An emerging therapy for children with intractable gastroparesis.

Management of gastroparesis remains challenging, particularly in pediatric patients. Supportive care and pharmacological therapies for symptoms remain the mainstay treatment. Although they are effective for mild and some moderately severe cases, often time they do not work for severe gastroparesis. There are a few prokinetics available, yet the use of these drugs is limited by a lack of persistent efficacy and/or safety concerns. Currently, the only modality for adult patients with severe intractable gastroparesis is surgery, e.g., pyloroplasty and partial gastrectomy, however, this option is

BCI-Triggered Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy for Upper Limb.

We present here the integration of brain-computer interfacing (BCI) technology with functional electrical stimulation therapy to restore voluntary function. The system was tested with a single man with chronic (6 years) severe left hemiplegia resulting from a stroke. The BCI, implemented as a simple "brain-switch" activated by power decreases in the 18 Hz - 28 Hz frequency range of the participant's electroencephalograpic signals, triggered a neuroprosthesis designed to facilitate forward reaching, reaching to the mouth, and lateral reaching movements. After 40 90-minute sessions in which the

Shocking therapy: Brief electrical stimulation for delayed nerve repair.

This commentary provides perspective on a recent paper published in Experimental Neurology by Elzinga et al. where the authors investigated the effect of brief electrical stimulation (ES) on nerve regeneration after delayed nerve repair in a rodent model. Their results from a well controlled series of experiments indicated that brief ES promoted axonal outgrowth after chronic axotomy as well after chronic Schwann cell and muscle denervation. ES also increased chronically axotomized neurons regenerating into chronically denervated stumps, which represent a true delayed repair. The authors concl

OpenXstim: an open-source programmable electrical stimulator for transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation therapy.

Objective.Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation, a non-invasive spinal cord neuromodulation method holds tremendous promise and hope to restore functions in individuals with paralysis resulting from spinal cord injury (SCI), cerebral palsy, stroke and other neurological conditions. Yet, there are relatively few options for such stimulation devices compared to conventional stimulators commonly used for neuromuscular electrical stimulation, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and functional electrical stimulation, particularly for people with neurological conditions in the developing c

A Magneto-Electric Synergistic Bioelectronic Suture for Antibacterial Therapy, Wireless Electrical Stimulation, and Biomechanical Monitoring.

Electroactive sutures show great potential for surgical wound management but remain limited by wired power supplies, unreliable biomechanical energy harvesting, and inadequate antibacterial performance. Here, we develop an electromagnetic induction-enabled electroactive antibacterial suture (SDTP) via hierarchical polydopamine-mediated assembly of tannic acid (TA) and polypyrrole (PPy). TA functions as both a broad-spectrum antibacterial agent and a dopant to form a dense conductive PPy network. Under a rotating magnetic field (RMF), the implanted suture wirelessly generates controllable micro

Comparative effectiveness of Low Level Laser therapy and Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation on Temporomandibular Joint Disorders.

Introduction: Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are the most common source of pain on the face. There are multiple etiologies, and several types of treatment have been reported. The use of non-invasive and reversible therapies in the treatment of such problems is recommended. The present study evaluated the effect of low-level laser (LLL) therapy and transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) on TMDs. Methods: In this single-blind study, 40 patients with temporomandibular disorders were randomly divided into four groups: TENS (TENSTem dental), LLL (diode 810 nm CW), shamTENS, and

Is Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation Therapy the Answer for Tinnitus: A Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is characterized by a disturbance of the balance between bone formation and bone resorption at one or more bone sites. Its neoplastic transformation to osteosarcoma of the bone has been widely cited in the literature; however, association with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) is very uncommon. In addition, whereas the pathophysiological relationship between PDB and secondary hyperparathyroidism is well established, there is much debate about the association between PDB and primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). CASE REPORT: We present a case of NHL arising i

Stroke participants' perceptions of robotic and electrical stimulation therapy: a new approach.

PURPOSE: User perceptions are critical, yet often ignored factors in the design and development of rehabilitation technologies. In this article, measures for collection of patient perceptions are developed and applied to a novel upper limb workstation that combines robotic therapy and electrical stimulation (ES). METHOD: Five participants with chronic upper limb hemiplegia post-stroke used a robotic workstation to undertake supported tracking tasks augmented by precisely controlled ES to their triceps muscle. Following a 6 week trial, a purpose designed set of questions was developed and indi

Mastication-Induced Electrical Stimulation Activates Prg4+ Chondroprogenitors for Osteoarthritis Therapy.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a whole-joint degenerative disease primarily driven by excessive mechanical overloading, yet current therapies fail to harness biomechanical cues to halt cartilage degeneration. Here, we developed mastication-driven magnesium-incorporated piezoelectric nanofibers (MagPie) that could convert joint loading into localized electrical stimulation while releasing Mg2 + to neutralize the acidic microenvironment. Under mechanical stimulation, MagPie promoted chondrocyte anabolism and suppressed inflammation in vitro. In a rat temporomandibular joint OA model induced by overloadi

Noninvasive Vagus Nerve Electrical Stimulation for Immune Modulation in Sepsis Therapy.

Sepsis presents a significant medical challenge due to its intense inflammatory response to infection, often resulting in high mortality rates. A promising therapeutic strategy targets the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAIP), which regulates immune responses. This study investigates the ingestion of piezoelectric particles that adhere to the stomach lining, specifically targeting TRPV1 receptors. In a mouse model of sepsis, these particles, when activated by low-intensity pulsed ultrasound, generate mild electrical pulses. These pulses stimulate vagal afferent fibers, transmitting sig

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation of the hindlimb muscles for movement therapy in a rodent model.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can provide functional movements in people after central nervous system injury. The neuroplastic effects of long-term NMES-induced repetitive limb movement are not well understood. A rodent model of neurotrauma in which NMES can be implemented may be effective for such investigations. We present a rodent model for NMES of the flexor and extensor muscles of the hip, knee, and ankle hindlimb muscles. Custom fabricated intramuscular stimulating electrodes for rodents were implanted near identified motor points of targeted muscles in ten adult, female Lo
