Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder attempt to suppress obsessions and/or compulsions. Although previous psychological research suggests reduced semantic inhibition in such patients, no research has explored the underlying neural mechanisms of semantic control in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder. In addition to semantic representation, semantic control also generates task-relevant behaviors. Previous research has implicated the left frontal and posterior temporal areas in semantic control; however, no research approaches the dynamic relationships among task-relevant brain ar

Rhythm perception and synchronization to periodicity hold fundamental neurodevelopmental importance for language acquisition, musical behavior, and social communication. Rhythm is omnipresent in the fetal auditory world and newborns demonstrate sensitivity to auditory rhythmic cues. During the last trimester of gestation, the brain begins to respond to auditory stimulation and to code the auditory environment. When and how during this period do the neural capacities for rhythm processing develop? We conducted a cross-sectional study in 46 neonates (24 male) born between 27 and 35 weeks gestati

Voluntary movements are planned through the relative timing between submovements of movement sequences as part of the motor program. Different movement phases are characterized by specific amplitude modulation of cortical oscillations. The latter represent neurophysiological correlates of specific synchronization or desynchronization of different neuronal groups. In this Neuro Forum, we review recent evidence regarding the temporal relation between neurophysiological correlates of different phases of a repetitive motor task using electroencephalography and source localization using individuali

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation has been associated with numerous cognitive and behavioural effects, such as enhancement of visual memory in healthy individuals, improvement of visual deficits in stroke patients, as well as possibly improvement of motor function in Parkinson's disease; yet, the mechanism of action is unclear. Since Parkinson's and other neuropsychiatric diseases are characterized by maladaptive dynamics of brain rhythms, we investigated whether noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation was associated with measurable changes in EEG oscillatory rhythms within theta (4-7.5 Hz),

BACKGROUND: Abnormal gaze discrimination in schizophrenia (SZ) is associated with impairment in social functioning, but the neural mechanisms remain unclear. Evidence suggests that local neural oscillations and inter-areal communication through neural synchronization are critical physiological mechanisms supporting basic and complex cognitive processes. The roles of these mechanisms in abnormal gaze processing in SZ have not been investigated. The present study examined local neural oscillations and connectivity between anterior and bilateral posterior brain areas during gaze processing.

Previous studies have focused on the detection of community structures of brain networks constructed with resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. Pearson correlation is often used to describe the connections between nodes in the construction of functional brain networks, which typically ignores the inherent timing and validity of fMRI time series. To solve this problem, this study applied the Dynamic Time Warp (DTW) algorithm to determine the correlation between two brain regions by comparing the synchronization and asynchrony of the time series. In addition, to determ

Background/Objectives: Electroencephalography (EEG) connectivity and microstate analysis have shown great potential for Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis; however, their clinical application remains limited by the low spatial resolution of EEG and the lack of standardized microstate analysis. To address these challenges, this study proposes a multi-domain feature fusion framework, namely Source-localized Microstate and Multi-frequency Synchronization (SMMS), which integrates EEG source localization (ESL)-based weighted phase lag index (wPLI) functional connectivity with EEG microstate feature

Targeting subcortical regions like the hippocampus with non-invasive brain stimulation is challenging due to predominantly cortical distribution of electric fields. Frontoparietal phase-synchronous transcranial alternating stimulation (tACS) offers a promising approach to modulate hippocampal functions, though its ability to induce modulation of oscillatory activity in deep subcortical targets remains to be shown. In this pilot study, we applied dual-site theta-tACS (in-phase between left frontoparietal regions) during a temporal order memory task. To quantify hippocampal activity and connecti

Objective.Fluid intelligence is a core component of higher-order cognition, yet whether high-definition high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (HD/HF-tRNS) can enhance demanding reasoning performance and modulate its neural correlates remains unclear.Approach.We investigated the after-effects of offline HD/HF-tRNS targeting the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). In a double-blind, sham-controlled, between-groups design, 26 healthy adults completed Raven's progressive matrices (RPM) before and after receiving active or sham stimulation. Temporal theta slow-wave activity (TTA-SW) in premature infants is a specific neurobiomarker of the early neurodevelopment of perisylvian networks observed as early as 24 weeks of gestational age (wGA). It is present at the turning point between non-sensory driven spontaneous networks and cortical network functioning. Despite its clinical importance, the underlying mechanisms responsible for this spontaneous nested activity and its functional role have not yet been determined. The coupling between neural oscillations at different timescales is a key feature of ongoing neural activity, the char

Neural activity synchronizes with the rhythmic input of many environmental signals, but the capacity of neural activity to entrain to the slow rhythms of speech is particularly important for successful communication. Compared to speech, song has greater rhythmic regularity, a more stable fundamental frequency, discrete pitch movements, and a metrical structure, this may provide a temporal framework that helps listeners neurally track information better than the rhythmically irregular rhythms of speech. The current study used EEG to examine whether entrainment to the syllable rate of linguistic

The subjective phenomenology associated with stereopsis, of solid tangible objects separated by a palpable negative space, is conventionally thought to be a by-product of the derivation of depth from binocular disparity. However, the same qualitative impression has been reported in the absence of disparity, e.g., when viewing pictorial images monocularly through an aperture. Here we aimed to explore if we could identify dissociable neural activity associated with the qualitative impression of stereopsis in the absence of the processing of binocular disparities. We measured EEG activity while s

Excessive salt intake is a pressing food health issue, and odor-induced saltiness enhancement (OISE) is a novel strategy for targeted salt reduction. Understanding the neural mechanisms of OISE is essential for salt reduction. In this study, the mechanism of saltiness enhancement induced by three volatile organic compounds (VOCs) identified in Jinhua dry ham was investigated in 20 panelists using electroencephalography (EEG). The study demonstrated that VOCs enhanced salty taste perception, primarily through low-frequency brain waves. Source localization revealed occipital lobe activation duri

The auditory frequency-following response (FFR) reflects synchronized and phase-locked activity along the auditory pathway in response to sound. Although FFRs were historically thought to reflect subcortical activity, recent evidence suggests an auditory cortex contribution as well. Here we present electrophysiological evidence for the FFR's origins from two cases: a patient with bilateral auditory cortex lesions and a patient with auditory neuropathy, a condition of subcortical origin. The patient with auditory cortex lesions had robust and replicable FFRs, but no cortical responses. In contr

INTRODUCTION: Differentiating between functional jerks (FJ) and organic myoclonus can be challenging. At present, the only advanced diagnostic biomarker to support FJ is the Bereitschaftspotential (BP). However, its sensitivity is limited and its evaluation subjective. Recently, event related desynchronisation in the broad beta range (13-45 Hz) prior to functional generalised axial (propriospinal) myoclonus was reported as a possible complementary diagnostic marker for FJ. Here we study the value of ERD together with a quantified BP in clinical practice.
METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with FJ

INTRODUCTION: The centrum medianum- parafascicular complex of the human thalamus has a critical influence on cortical activity and significantly influences somatosensory function, arousal, and attention. In addition to its cortical connections, this region of the intralaminar thalamic nuclei is also connected to motor areas of the basal ganglia and the brain stem.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to identify movement-related neurons in the centrum medianum-parafascicular complex and analyze the changes in their activity during voluntary movements in patients with cervical dystonia.

UNLABELLED: Nociceptive stimuli can induce a transient suppression of electroencephalographic oscillations in the alpha frequency band (ie, alpha event-related desynchronization, α-ERD). Here we investigated whether α-ERD could be functionally distinguished in 2 temporally and spatially segregated subcomponents as suggested by previous studies. In addition, we tested whether the degree of dependence of nociceptive-induced α-ERD magnitude on the prestimulus α-power would have been larger than the degree of dependence on the poststimulus α-power. Our findings confirmed the dissociation between a

Introduction: Synchronized oscillatory brain activity is considered a basis for flexible neuronal network communication. However, the causal role of inter-regional oscillatory phase relations in modulating signaling efficacy in cortical networks has not been directly demonstrated in humans so far. Aim: The current study addresses the causal role of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS)-induced oscillatory cross-network phase relations in modulating signaling efficacy across human cortical networks. Methods: To this end, concurrent tACS, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), an
