Can the electronic nose diagnose chronic rhinosinusitis? A new experimental study.

In otorhinolaryngologist's experience the nasal out-breath of people affected by chronic nasal or paranasal infections may be characterized by peculiar odours. In a previous study we showed that an electronic nose (EN), examining nasal out breath was able to distinguish subjects affected by chronic rhinosinusitis from healthy subjects. The present study is aimed at analysing the intensity and the quality of the odorous components present in the air expired by patients affected by rhinosinusitis, using a new EN based on gas-chromatography and surface acoustic wave analysis. In the gas-chromatog

Noninvasive SARS-CoV-2 detection using a low-cost electronic nose.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the urgent need for rapid and accurate SARS-CoV-2 detection. Current diagnostic methods often suffer from discomfort, slow results, and limited accuracy in early infection stages. This study proposes a solution: a noninvasive, rapid, and accurate detection approach for point-of-care settings using a metal-oxide-sensor-based electronic nose. This innovative electronic nose uses an array of off-the-shelf gas sensors. These sensors detect and analyze the volatile organic compounds present in saliva and exhaled breath, which change based on the presence of the SAR

Clinical studies of detecting COVID-19 from exhaled breath with electronic nose.

The COVID-19 pandemic has attracted numerous research studies because of its impact on society and the economy. The pandemic has led to progress in the development of diagnostic methods, utilizing the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) as the gold standard for coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 detection. Numerous tests can be used at home within 15 min or so but of with lower accuracy than PCR. There is still a need for point-of-care tests available for mass daily screening of large crowds in airports, schools, and stadiums. The same problem exists with fast and continuous monitoring of patients during thei

Differentiating interstitial lung diseases from other respiratory diseases using electronic nose technology.

INTRODUCTION: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) may be difficult to distinguish from other respiratory diseases due to overlapping clinical presentation. Recognition of ILD is often late, causing delay which has been associated with worse clinical outcome. Electronic nose (eNose) sensor technology profiles volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath and has potential to detect ILD non-invasively. We assessed the accuracy of differentiating breath profiles of patients with ILD from patients with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer using eNose technology.
