Benchmarking electrophysiological models of human atrial myocytes.

Mathematical modeling of cardiac electrophysiology is an insightful method to investigate the underlying mechanisms responsible for arrhythm … benchmarked with respect to general mathematical properties and their ability to reproduce certain electrophysiological phenomena, such as action potential (AP) alternans. To assess the models' ability to replicate modified properties of human myocytes and tissue in cardiac disease, electrical remodeling in chronic atrial fibrillation (cAF) was chosen as test case. The healthy …

The functional substrate in patients with atrial fibrillation is predictive of recurrences after catheter ablation.

BACKGROUND: Enhanced characterization of the atrial electrical substrate may lead to better comprehension of atrial fibrillation (AF) pathophysiology. OBJECTIVE: With the use of high-density substrate mapping, we sought to investigate the occurrence of functional electrophysiological phenomena in the left atrium and to assess potential association with arrhythmia recurrences after catheter ablation. METHODS: Sixty-three consecutive patients with AF referred for ablation were enrolled. Analysis of conduction abnormalities relied on two acquired left atrial electroanatomic maps (sinus and atri…

Robust estimation of 1/f activity improves oscillatory burst detection.

Neural oscillations often occur as transient bursts with variable amplitude and frequency dynamics. Quantifying these effects is important for understanding brain-behaviour relationships, especially in continuous datasets. To robustly measure bursts, rhythmical periods of oscillatory activity must be separated from arrhythmical background 1/f activity, which is ubiquitous in electrophysiological recordings. The Better OSCillation (BOSC) framework achieves this by defining a power threshold above the estimated background 1/f activity, combined with a duration threshold. Here we introduce a modi

Interesting electrophysiological phenomenon during positioning of the lead deep inside the septum.

Left bundle branch pacing (LBBP) is a developing physiological pacing technique. Wu et al. proposed that direct LBB capture could be confirmed by recording retrograde His potential (PoReHis ) and mapping of the left conduction system potential. The transventricular-septal electrophysiological phenomena deserve further study. Here, we used a continuous uninterrupted pacing technique to confirm the LBB capture by dynamically observing changes in PoReHis and stimulus to left ventricular activation time.

Facilitating the Sharing of Electrophysiology Data Analysis Results Through In-Depth Provenance Capture.

Scientific research demands reproducibility and transparency, particularly in data-intensive fields like electrophysiology. Electrophysiology data are typically analyzed using scripts that generate output files, including figures. Handling these results poses several challenges due to the complexity and iterative nature of the analysis process. These stem from the difficulty to discern the analysis steps, parameters, and data flow from the results, making knowledge transfer and findability challenging in collaborative settings. Provenance information tracks data lineage and processes applied t

[Muscle cramps].

Muscle cramps are very common and can reduce quality of life. There are multiple causes, including some physiological conditions, metabolic, endocrine, vascular disorders or neuromuscular diseases. Adequate management first requires differentiating cramps from other muscular phenomena. In most cases, the investigations are limited to a comprehensive history and clinical examination, but a biological, radiological and/or electrophysiological work-up may be useful. Treatment, when needed, is most often symptomatic and is unfortunately based on little evidence.

Experimental labyrinthine lesions through stylomastoid foramen.

It was confirmed that the substances injected into the facial nerve through the stylomastoid foramen, reached every part of the inner ear. In sensitized animals, by repeated provocative injections of antigen, acute reversible episodes, very similar to that of Ménière's disease, were observed. The injection of various solutions and the provocative injection into the sensitized animals, resulted in completely opposite reactions. In sensitized animals, the electrophysiological phenomena of the cochlea also showed fluctuations like Ménière's disease.

[Somatosensory phenomena and the role of sensorimotor circuits in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome].

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) is characterized by multiple fluctuating motor and vocal tics. These tics are often preceded by premonitory phenomena including the urge to move, or by exaggerated bodily sensations that can lead to considerable disability and difficulties with attention and concentration. In the past the premonitory phenomena were interpreted as the driving force behind tics. However, there is not always a clear sequence of premonitory sensations followed by a tic. Also, the former typically develop around the age of 10 years, i.e. after the onset of the latter. Thus, the

Calcineurin and electrical remodeling in pathologic cardiac hypertrophy.

Calcineurin is a cytoplasmic Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein phosphatase that contributes to cardiac hypertrophy. Numerous studies have demonstrated that calcineurin/nuclear factor of activated T cell pathway affects the architecture of the heart under pathologic conditions, and the effects of calcineurin/nuclear factor of activated T cell pathway on cardiac hypertrophy have been well reviewed. Cardiac electrical remodeling is generally accompanied with the cardiac hypertrophy, and alteration of cardiac ion channel activity also leads to the changes of calcineurin activity and cardiac hype

Dracula's teeth syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a patient with facial pain, ipsilateral facial dystonia, and phantom supernumerary teeth, beginning after resection of hypertrophic gums. She had familial sensorineural deafness. BACKGROUND: Atypical cranial dystonia subsequent to dental procedures is associated with facial pain, dysesthesias, or phantom phenomena, but not with phantom supernumerary teeth. Patients with migraine are susceptible to experience cephalic phantom phenomena after dental procedures. Wynne syndrome is a hereditary autosomal dominant disorder characterized by congenital sensorineural deafness an

A physics-informed eikonal model for simulating arrhythmias in the human heart in real-time.

Personalized computational models of cardiac electrophysiology, referred to as cardiac digital twins, are considered a key technology for realizing precision cardiology by tailoring therapies to individual patients. However, the high computational demands of physically detailed simulations prohibit broader adoption of cardiac digital twins in practical applications. Here, we aim to address this challenge with a lightweight Physics-Informed Eikonal model that replicates the biophysical phenomena embedded within cardiac electrophysiology models along with clinical electrograms in near real-time,

Motor disturbance during REM sleep in group A xeroderma pigmentosum.

We investigated motor phenomena during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in 13 patients with group A xeroderma pigmentosum aged from 11 to 39 months, and compared them with those obtained from 12 age-matched controls. At the time of sleep study, they had no abnormality on routine electrophysiological examinations. The amount of REM sleep and the incidence of motor phenomena during REM sleep in patients were similar to those in age-matched controls. However using the newly designated indices, we demonstrated disturbance on both the tonic motor inhibition occurring during the whole REM sleep period

Dynamics of conduction blocks in a model of paced cardiac tissue.

We study numerically the dynamics of conduction blocks using a detailed electrophysiological model. We find that this dynamics depends critically on the size of the paced region. Small pacing regions lead to stationary conduction blocks while larger pacing regions can lead to conduction blocks that travel periodically towards the pacing region. We show that this size-dependence dynamics can lead to a novel arrhythmogenic mechanism. Furthermore, we show that the essential phenomena can be captured in a much simpler coupled-map model.
