English language learners with reading-related LD: linking data from multiple sources to make eligibility determinations.

Results are reported for an exploratory study of eligibility decisions made for 21 Spanish-speaking English language learners (ELLs) with learning disabilities (LD) and no secondary disabilities who received special education support in reading. Eligibility determinations by an expert panel resulted in decisions that differed significantly from those of school multidisciplinary teams. The panel agreed that some students appeared to have reading-related LD (n = 5) but also identified students that they believed had disabilities, but not necessarily reading-related LD (n = 6). Another group of s

Determinants of Eligibility and Timing of Autologous Transplantation in Multiple Myeloma: The Role of R-MCI and Diagnostic Plasma Cell Burden.

Background: Autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) remains a cornerstone in the management of multiple myeloma (MM). However, the optimal timing of ASCT and the factors determining whether patients ultimately undergo transplantation remain unclear in real-world practice. The Revised Myeloma Comorbidity Index (R-MCI) was developed to quantify patient fitness but its influence on transplant eligibility and timing has not been fully characterized. Methods: We conducted a retrospective single-center study including 137 patients with newly diagnosed MM between 2015 and 2025. Clinical parameter

Criteria Used to Determine Platinum Eligibility in Patients with Metastatic Urothelial Carcinoma: Results of a Physician Survey in Five European Countries.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although, for decades, first-line treatment for metastatic urothelial carcinoma (mUC) has been based on eligibility for platinum-based chemotherapy (cisplatin or carboplatin), the platinum-ineligibility criteria used by European physicians in real-world practice are unclear. This study assessed the factors and clinical thresholds used by European physicians to determine platinum ineligibility and alignment with the published US thresholds. METHODS: Physicians in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK completed a quantitative online survey from August to September

Successful integration of newborn genetic testing into UK routine screening using prospective consent to determine eligibility for clinical trials.

OBJECTIVE: INGR1D (INvestigating Genetic Risk for type 1 Diabetes) was a type 1 diabetes (T1D) genetic screening study established to identify participants for a primary prevention trial (POInT, Primary Oral Insulin Trial). METHODS: The majority of participants were recruited by research midwives in antenatal clinics from 18 weeks' gestation. Using the NHS Newborn Bloodspot Screening Programme (NBSP) infrastructure, participants enrolled in INGR1D had an extra sample taken from their day 5 bloodspot card sent for T1D genetic screening. Those at an increased risk of T1D were informed of the re

An Evaluation of Patient Risk Factors to Determine Eligibility to Undergo Orthopaedic Surgery in a Freestanding Ambulatory Center A Survey of 4,242 Consecutive Patients.

INTRODUCTION: The value proposition of surgery at freestanding ambulatory surgery centers (FSASCs) in terms of efficiency, safety, and patient satisfaction is well established and has led to increased FSASC utilization. However, there are comorbid conditions that disqualify certain patients from surgery at FSASCs. Understanding the percentage of patients whose comorbid conditions exclude them from FSASCs is important for the proper planning and utilization of operating room assets. We aim to understand the percentage of excluded patients, and we predict that certain procedures have higher rate

Validation of local p16 testing for determination of human papilloma virus status eligibility on a low risk oropharyngeal cancer trial - A Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group study.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate determination of human papilloma virus (HPV) status is critical when identifying patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) who may be candidates for de-escalation trials. In this study we investigated whether local p16 screening, by immunohistochemistry (IHC), has high positive predictive value (PPV) for HPV status in a good prognosis HPV positive OPSCC (HPVOPSCC) population treated on a clinical trial. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients enrolled on the TROG 12.01 randomised trial for good prognosis HPVOPSCC were randomised based on local p16 IHC testing but

Determinants of eligibility for second-line chemotherapy following gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel therapy in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Second-line chemotherapy (2L) is recommended after gemcitabine plus nab-paclitaxel (GnP) first-line chemotherapy (1L) for unresectable pancreatic cancer (UR-PC). However, in routine clinical practice, not all patients proceed to 2L. This retrospective study aimed to identify baseline clinical and biological factors associated with 2L eligibility. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 124 consecutive patients with UR-PC who received 1L GnP between 2016 and 2024 at a single center, excluding those with postoperative recurrence. Patients were grouped by 2L receipt [2L( +),

Preoperative Oswestry Disability Index Should not be Utilized to Determine Surgical Eligibility for Patients Requiring Lumbar Fusion for Degenerative Lumbar Spine Disease.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate how preoperative Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) thresholds might affect minimal clinically important difference (MCID) achievement following lumbar fusion. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: As payers invest in alternative payment models, some are suggesting threshold cutoffs of patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) in reimbursement approvals for orthopedic procedures. The feasibility of this has not been investigated in spine surgery. MATERIALS/METHODS: We included all adult patients undergoing one to three-level primary lumbar fusion

Two clinical tests assessing long thoracic nerve function to determine C5 and C6 root graft eligibility in patients with brachial plexus injury.

OBJECTIVE: Identifying roots available for grafting is of paramount importance prior to reconstructing complex injuries involving the brachial plexus. This is traditionally achieved by combining input from both clinical examinations and imaging studies. In this paper, the authors describe and evaluate two new clinical tests to study long thoracic nerve function and, consequently, to predict the status of the C5 and C6 roots after global brachial plexus injuries. METHODS: From March 2020 to December 2020, in 41 patients undergoing brachial plexus repair, preoperative clinical assessments were

Gender-specific mortality in DTP-IPV- and MMR±MenC-eligible age groups to determine possible sex-differential effects of vaccination: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies suggested that vaccines could have non-specific effects on mortality depending on the type of vaccine. Non-specific effects seem to be different in boys and girls. In this study we want to investigate whether there are differences in gender-specific mortality among Dutch children according to the last vaccination received. We tested the hypothesis that the mortality rate ratio for girls versus boys is more favourable for girls following MMR±MenC vaccination (from 14 months of age) compared with the ratio following DTP-IPV vaccination (2-13 months of age). Absolute risk-based versus individualized benefit approaches for determining statin eligibility in primary prevention of cardiovascular diseases in Chinese populations: A modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines for statin use in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD) predominantly rely on absolute 10-year CVD risk scores. However, this approach may not adequately capture heterogeneity in the potential benefit of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction. This study compares the absolute risk-based approach with an individualized benefit approach, based on the Causal-Benefit model considering predicted lipid-lowering effects, for statin eligibility in Chinese populations. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We analyzed nationally representative data from the C

Drug level testing as a strategy to determine eligibility for drug resistance testing after failure of ART: a retrospective analysis of South African adult patients on second-line ART.

INTRODUCTION: When protease inhibitor (PI)-based second-line ART fails, guidelines recommend drug resistance testing and individualized third-line treatment. However, PI-resistant viral strains are rare and drug resistance testing is costly. We investigated whether less costly PI-exposure testing can be used to select those patients who would benefit most from drug resistance testing. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of South African adults living with HIV experiencing failure of ritonavir-boosted-lopinavir (LPV/r)-based second-line ART for whom drug resistance testing results w
