Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is among the most common food allergies in early childhood, affecting approximately 2-3% of children under 3 years of age. Management requires strict elimination of cow's milk and dairy products, typically replaced with hypoallergenic formulas. Although essential, this dietary restriction may predispose infants-particularly during the first 2 years of life-to nutritional imbalances. This mini review synthesizes current evidence on micronutrient status and growth outcomes in children with CMA, with emphasis on the impact of dietary management. Across observational studi

BACKGROUND: Limited data describe the long-term efficacy of dietary elimination in eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE).
AIM: To assess the long-term outcomes of food elimination diets for treatment of adults with EoE.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study at our centre analysing all EoE patients receiving a food elimination diet without concomitant steroids. Baseline data were abstracted using standardised collection forms. Follow-up data from a mean 24.9-month period were collected for patients with a histological response to a food elimination diet during and after food reintroduc

BACKGROUND: Skin testing-guided elimination diet has proved unsuccessful for adult eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE), whereas empiric six-food elimination diet (SFED) achieves an efficacy of 70%.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of food-specific serum IgE-targeted elimination diet (sIgE-ED) and SFED.
METHODS: Prospective study in adult patients with EoE. Food-specific serum IgE, skin prick test (SPT) and atopy patch test (APT) to foods included in SFED were performed. Those with ≥1 positive IgE test, defined by ≥0.1 kU/l, followed a 6-week sIgE-ED, whereas non-IgE-sensitized patients underwe

BackgroundDespite its high prevalence, relatively little is known about the characteristics of patients with multiple tree-nut allergies.MethodsPatients (n=60, aged 4-15 years), recruited for a multiple food (tree nuts, peanut, milk, egg, soy, sesame, and wheat) oral immunotherapy (OIT) study, filled a questionnaire on their initial allergy evaluation. Medical records were reviewed. At OIT enrollment (median interval, 7.5 years), patients underwent oral food challenges (OFCs) to foods still eliminated.ResultsThere was significantly less evidence for eliminating tree nuts compared with other fo

BACKGROUND: Elimination diets are the gold standard for the diagnosis of adverse food reactions (AFR). A broad variety of commercial diets are available containing either hydrolysed protein or novel ingredients which claim to be suitable for elimination diets. Contamination may be one factor accounting for the failure of commercial elimination diet trials.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To test commercial diets labelled as suitable for elimination diets for dogs, for DNA of animal origin other than that declared on the label.
METHODS: Twelve commercial dry and tinned dog food products were investiga

Alternatives to cow's milk and soy milk are often necessary for children with food allergies. Although hydrolyzed and elemental formulas are appropriate replacements, other milk products such as rice and almond milk are insufficient protein sources for children under 2 years of age. A chart review on three patients treated for protein malnutrition in association with multiple diagnosed food allergies that resulted in refractory eczema revealed adverse outcomes that resulted from elimination diets. The use of rice milk resulted in hypoalbuminemia and poor weight gain in all cases, and multiple

Many people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) believe that certain foods may influence disease activity. Elimination reintroduction diets and oral food challenges are dietary strategies used to identify foods that may exacerbate symptoms. This review summarises and appraises the literature on elimination diet interventions that include food reintroductions or oral food challenges in adults with RA. It describes study design, measures used to assess the effects of food exclusion and challenge, foods identified that may affect RA symptoms, and the measures used to assess the outcome of excluding th

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dietary management, particularly through food elimination, has emerged as an effective therapeutic strategy for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). In this context, a one-food elimination diet (1-FED) targeting cow's milk has been proposed as a targeted and less restrictive alternative to broader elimination approaches. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to systematically assess the effectiveness of 1-FED in achieving histological remission and to compare its efficacy with broader elimination diets in patients with EoE.
METHODS: A systematic review of t

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common disorder of gut-brain interaction that impairs quality of life (QoL).1 Its pathophysiology is complex and incompletely understood. Recent studies suggest duodenal low-grade inflammation and increased permeability may contribute, although triggers remain unclear, potentially involving luminal antigens such as food or microbial components.2-5 Exclusion diets, including low fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols (FODMAP) or gluten-free, have been attempted, but no standardized therapy exists. In eosinophilic esophagitis, the

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of an oligoantigenic and histamine-free diet on patients affected with chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU).
DESIGN: Ten patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria were prescribed an oligoantigenic and histamine-free diet for 21 days, followed by serial and controlled reintroduction of foods during a further 70 days. Modification in clinical illness as well as histamine plasma levels, post-heparin plasma diamine oxidase (DAO) and intestinal permeability were evaluated.
RESULTS: The oligoantigenic and histamine-free diet induced a sig

Background/Objectives: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication, restricted and repetitive behaviors, and sensory processing abnormalities, including food selectivity. Due to the lack of effective causal therapies, alternative approaches such as dietary interventions are increasingly being explored. This study aimed to assess the impact of dietary factors on the nutritional status of children with ASD. Methods: A total of 103 children (75 with ASD and 28 controls) were included. Nutritional status was assessed using bioc

BACKGROUND: Non-esophageal eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (non-EoE EGIDs) are chronic inflammatory disorders with massive infiltration of eosinophils into the gastrointestinal tract. Food elimination diets are potentially effective treatments. But the existing dietary therapies have various weak points. We developed a new regimen to compensate for the shortcomings of the elemental diet and 6-food elimination diet. The new regimen consists of an amino-acid-based formula, potatoes, vegetables, fruits and restricted seasonings. We named it the "Rainbow Elimination Diet (ED)." The aims of

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory disease with isolated eosinophils in the esophagus predominantly triggered by foods. The optimal testing to identify inciting foods remains unclear.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine the effectiveness of allergy testing-directed diets in patients with EoE.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all children with EoE seen at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia between 2000 and 2011 identified 941 patients with EoE. Skin prick tests (SPTs) and atopy patch tests (APTs) were conducted, and predictive values were calculated.

Food allergy is normally treated by eliminating the offending food. Such a measure, however, may cause nutritional and sociopsychological problems, so an allergy must be diagnosed with the utmost certainty. To date the most reliable diagnostic test is the double-blind food challenge (DBFC). The rationale for using this test is the marked difference in positive results with open and double-blind food challenges. Only about 30% of open challenges that appear positive are confirmed on blind challenge. There is ample evidence, too, that a negative DBFC may in fact indicate tolerance to that food.

The involvement of components of food in the causation of recurrent aphthous ulceration of the oral mucosa is controversial. To test the proposition, seventeen patients with RAU which had been resistant to other forms of treatment were studied with the aid of a strict elimination diet. Five patients abandoned the difficult diet, and of the remaining twelve there were five patients who had remission of RAU while on the diet. In four of these five patients a particular food was identified which, when eliminated from the normal diet, led to either marked improvement or resolution. The results of

BACKGROUND: Schnitzler syndrome (SS) is a rare clinical entity characterized by chronic recurrent urticarial rash, monoclonal IgM gammopathy, intermittent fever and other symptoms. In this report, we present the cases of two patients with SS: a male and a female aged 50 and 49 years, respectively. Both patients had hyperimmunoglobulinemia E and showed good response to elimination diet.
METHODS: The patients had chronic urticaria, IgM gammopathy and an elevation of the serum levels of inflammation markers. Total IgE levels were found to be high (2000 U/ml and 540 U/ml, respectively). No underl
