Does the rat with hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus have impaired avoidance learning and/or performance?

Avoidance learning and extinction of rats with hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus (Brattleboro strain) were studied in 2 experiments that differed only in shock intensity. In both experiments rats homozygous for diabetes insipidus were more deficient in both escape and avoidance responding than were their heterozygous or normal controls. Although the hterozygous animals showed improved escape performance at the higher shock intensity, their avoidance behavior was not improved. The superiority of normal and heterozygous animals in extinction performance, relative to the homozygous anima

Selective Neural Pathway Targeting by Using Lentiviral Vectors.

Animal behaviors are controlled through a complex neural network in the brain. To explore the nature of brain functions, it is critical to investigate the behavioral and physiological roles of specific neuronal types that comprise this network. Immunotoxin (ITX)-mediated cell targeting is a technology designed to eliminate specific cell types that are genetically engineered to express a foreign receptor, utilizing the cytotoxic activity of a recombinant ITX. Lentiviral vectors with highly efficient retrograde gene transfer (HiRet) and neuron-specific retrograde gene transfer (NeuRet) propertie

Neophobia in spontaneous hypertensive (SHR) and normotensive control (WKY) rats.

Latency of approaching a novel object (white-colored cube) placed in an unfamiliar open field, duration of object exploration, ambulation, rearing, grooming, and defecation were investigated in spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR), their genetic normotensive controls (WKY), and standard Laboratory rats of Wistar origin (Tif:RAIf). The parameters measured were taken as indices of fear due to novelty (neophobia). Remarkable differences in behavior of all three strains were observed. By comparison to RAIf and WKY rats, SHR showed decreased neophobia as reflected in the significantly shorter latenc

Stereotypic behavior in wild marine carnivores?

Stereotypic behavior is observed in many species within zoological institutions. Attempts to reduce such behavior typically involve some form of environmental enrichment that provides opportunities for species appropriate behavior or some degree of control within the environment. However, environmental enrichment has never been completely successful in eliminating stereotypic behavior for an entire group of animals within a zoological facility. In the wild, stereotypic behavior is rarely observed. Documenting the occurrence of stereotypic behavior in the wild, and circumstances in which it occ

Use of fluoxetine for the treatment of stereotypical pacing behavior in a captive polar bear.

Stereotypical behaviors are common in captive animals, particularly captive polar bears. Effects of oral administration of fluoxetine on chronic stereotypical and typical behaviors in a captive polar bear were monitored. Fluoxetine treatment terminated stereotypic pacing behavior, facial tic, and huffing/coughing activity. The expression of typical polar bear behaviors was not affected by fluoxetine treatment, although the proportion of time spent engaged in typical behaviors changed during the course of the observation period. Response of the bear to fluoxetine treatment indicated that pharma

Epidemiological study of Brucellosis in cattle, immunized with Brucella abortus RB51 vaccine in endemic zones.

In this study the behavior of the Brucella abortus RB51 vaccine was evaluated in bovine herds, with different prevalence of Brucellosis. A prospective longitudinal study was made, in two dairies, one of low prevalence (9%) with 538 cows, and the other of high prevalence (15%) with 612 cows. The cattle were vaccinated twice 90 days apart with RB51 at a dose of 1×10(9)cfu/ml. The monthly incidence was determined during 660 days of observation. In the low prevalence dairy, all positive animals were eliminated as soon as they were diagnosed as positive and in this herd the number of new cases decr

Spillage behavior and thiamin deficiency in the rat.

Food spillage, food intake and body weight of four groups of adult rats were monitored daily as they were fed varying responses of deficient, marginal, or high thiamin (B) diet. Food spillage was a more sensitive index of the dietary B1 then either food intake or body weight change. Animals fed the deficient B1 diet exhibited the greatest levels of food spillage followed by the animals fed the marginal B1 diet. Hypophagia and weight loss occurred only among animals fed the marginal B1 diet. Feeding the high B1 diet to animals previously given the deficient and marginal B1 diets completely elim

Deafness due to loss of a TRPV channel eliminates mating behavior in Aedes aegypti males.

Attraction and mating between male and female animals depend on effective communication between conspecifics. However, in mosquitoes, we have only a rudimentary understanding of the sensory cues and receptors critical for the communication that is essential for reproductive behavior. While it is known that male Aedes aegypti use sound to help them identify females, it is not unclear whether sound detection is absolutely required since other cues such as vision may also participate in mating behavior. To determine the effect of eliminating hearing on mating success, we knocked out the Ae. aegyp

Coelomic Transport and Clearance of Durable Foreign Bodies by Starfish (Asterias rubens).

Echinoderms have excellent healing and regeneration abilities, but little is known about how they deal with the related challenge of durable foreign bodies that become lodged within their bodies. Here we report a novel mechanism for foreign body elimination in starfish. When injected into the arm of a starfish, passive integrated transponder tags and magnets of similar dimensions are eliminated at a rate approximating 10% per day. These objects are forcefully ejected through the body wall at the distal tip of an arm. Ultrasound images reveal that foreign bodies are moved within the body cavity

Pharmacologic control of pemoline induced self-injurious behavior in rats.

Administration of oral Pemoline produces long lasting amphetamine-type stereotyped behavior and persistent self-biting behavior in rats. The effects of haloperidol, pimozide, diazepam, and serotonin depletion by pretreatment with p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) or chronic pretreatment with p-chloroamphetamine (PCA) on abnormal behavior produced by pemoline were studied. Diazepam consistently increased the duration of stereotyped behavior. It also reduced licking/biting and self-biting but the latter effects were not consistent. Pretreatment with PCA had negligible effects on stereotyped behavior.

Differential effects of antipsychotics on lateral bias and social attention in female rats.

RATIONALE: Prior research has demonstrated that individuals with schizophrenia may exhibit lateral biases in attention and deficits in social behavior. The use of a noninvasive animal model of attentional impairments in schizophrenia and antipsychotic drugs can help elucidate the biological underpinnings of attentional processes and facilitate the study of novel therapeutics. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of three antipsychotic drugs on measures of lateral bias and social attention in healthy, unoperated female rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female Long-Evans

Sensory Detection by the Vomeronasal Organ Modulates Experience-Dependent Social Behaviors in Female Mice.

In mice, social behaviors are largely controlled by the olfactory system. Pheromone detection induces naïve virgin females to retrieve isolated pups to the nest and to be sexually receptive to males, but social experience increases the performance of both types of innate behaviors. Whether animals are intrinsically sensitive to the smell of conspecifics, or the detection of olfactory cues modulates experience for the display of social responses is currently unclear. Here, we employed mice with an olfactory-specific deletion of the G protein Gαi2, which partially eliminates sensory function in

Behavioral profiles of feline breeds in Japan.

To clarify the behavioral profiles of 9 feline purebreds, 2 Persian subbreeds and the Japanese domestic cat, a questionnaire survey was distributed to 67 small-animal veterinarians. We found significant differences among breeds in all behavioral traits examined except for "inappropriate elimination". In addition, sexual differences were observed in certain behaviors, including "aggression toward cats", "general activity", "novelty-seeking", and "excitability". These behaviors were more common in males than females, whereas "nervousness" and "inappropriate elimination" were rated higher in fema

Involvement of dopamine receptor in the actions of non-psychoactive phytocannabinoids.

Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) exhibited a vigorous swimming behavior in liquid medium. Addition of dopamine inhibited the swimming behavior, causing paralysis in 65% of wild-type nematodes. Interestingly, phytocannabinoids cannabidiol (CBD) or cannabidivarin (CBDV), caused paralysis in 40% of the animals. Knockout of DOP-3, the dopamine D2-like receptor critical for locomotor behavior, eliminated the paralysis induced by dopamine, CBD, and CBDV. In contrast, both CBD and CBDV caused paralysis in animals lacking CAT-2, an enzyme necessary for dopamine synthesis. Co-administration

Pathological aggression in "fierce" mice corrected by human nuclear receptor 2E1.

"Fierce" mice, homozygous for the deletion of nuclear receptor 2E1 (NR2E1), show abnormal brain-eye development and pathological aggression. To evaluate functional equivalency between mouse and human NR2E1, we generated mice transgenic for a genomic clone spanning the human NR2E1 locus and bred these animals to fierce mice deleted for the corresponding mouse gene. In fierce mutants carrying human NR2E1, structural brain defects were eliminated and eye abnormalities ameliorated. Excitingly, behavior in these "rescue" mice was indistinguishable from controls. Because no artificial promoter was u

[Low dose of disulfiram and l-dopa evoked synergistic modification in behavior of Wistar and WAG/Rij rats].

Comparative analysis of behaviors of two rat strains, Wistar and WAG/Rij, was performed. No behavioral differences between Wistar and WAG/Rij were found in the emotional resonance test. Disulfiram injection produced similar effects in both rat strains. Animals of the first group (with slow acquisition of emotional resonance reaction) transformed into the animals of the second group (with fast acquisition). Passive avoidance conditioning was successfully reproduced in Wistar and was significantly impaired in WAG/Rij. A low dose of disulfiram injected before or immediately after conditioning sub

Excretion patterns of solute and different-sized particle passage markers in foregut-fermenting proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) do not indicate an adaptation for rumination.

Behavioral observations and small fecal particles compared to other primates indicate that free-ranging proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) have a strategy of facultative merycism(rumination). In functional ruminants (ruminant and camelids), rumination is facilitated by a particle sorting mechanism in the forestomach that selectively retains larger particles and subjects them to repeated mastication. Using a set of a solute and three particle markers of different sizes (b2, 5 and 8mm),we displayed digesta passage kinetics and measured mean retention times (MRTs) in four captive proboscis monk

Mixture of cis-3-hexenol and trans-2-hexenal attenuates behavioral and stress responses induced by 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline and electric footshock stress in rats.

Green odor (GO), a mixture of cis-3-hexenol and trans-2-hexenal, attenuates stress responses and anxiety to psychological stressors in rodents; however, it remains unknown whether GO affects behavioral and stress responses to risk-related olfactory stimuli and actual noxious stimuli. The present study investigated the effects of green odor on behavioral and plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) responses to 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT), a component of fox feces, and electric footshock (FS) stress. When rats were simultaneously exposed to TMT and GO, they showed decreases in

Challenges towards the elimination of Human African Trypanosomiasis in the sleeping sickness focus of Campo in southern Cameroon.

The sleeping sickness focus of Campo lies along the Atlantic coast and extends along the Ntem River, which constitutes the Cameroonian and Equatorial Guinean border. It is a hypo-endemic focus with the disease prevalence varying from 0.3 to 0.86% during the last few decades. Investigations on animal reservoirs revealed a prevalence of Trypanosoma brucei gambiense of 0.6% in wild animals and 4.83% in domestic animals of this focus. From 2001 to 2012, about 19 931 tsetse were collected in this focus and five tsetse species including Glossina palpalis palpalis, G. pallicera, G. nigrofusca, G. tab
