Limited need for hospital resources among patients brought to hospital by the emergency medical services.

BACKGROUND: In Sweden, the majority of patients who are transported to hospital by the emergency medical services (EMS) are relatively old and the majority suffer from comorbidity. About half these patients are admitted to a hospital ward and will stay in hospital. However, the other half will only make a visit to the emergency department (ED). The burden on the ED is extensive and many elderly patients have to stay for many hours in the ED. AIM: To describe the patients who are brought to hospital by the EMS, with particular emphasis on those that were discharged from the ED, and to assess t

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Psychiatric Emergency Service Volume and Hospital Admissions.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been an increasing number of emergency department visits for behavioral health reasons, even as overall emergency department volumes have decreased. The impact of the pandemic and related public health interventions on specialized psychiatric emergency services has not been described. These services provide high-intensity care for severely ill patients who are likely to be homeless and underserved. OBJECTIVE: We describe the change in total volume and psychiatric hospitalization rates among three psychiatric emergency services across the Un

Factors affecting psychiatric inpatient hospitalization from a psychiatric emergency service.

OBJECTIVE: As a gateway to the mental health system, psychiatric emergency services (PES) are charged with assessing a heterogeneous array of short-term and long-term psychiatric crises. However, few studies have examined factors associated with inpatient psychiatric hospitalization following PES in a racially diverse sample. We examine the demographic, service use and clinical factors associated with inpatient hospitalization and differences in predisposing factors by race and ethnicity. METHOD: Three months of consecutive admissions to San Francisco's only 24-h PES (N = 1,305) were reviewed

Video laryngoscopy versus direct laryngoscopy in a UK pre-hospital physician/critical care paramedic helicopter emergency medical service.

BACKGROUND: It is recognised that multiple attempts at intubation are associated with harm. However, it remains unclear whether video laryngoscopy (VL) significantly improves pre-hospital tracheal intubation success compared to direct laryngoscopy (DL) in critically ill patients. While operating theatre studies strongly favour VL, some pre-hospital studies suggest it may worsen outcomes. METHODS: This single-centre retrospective service evaluation included critically ill patients requiring pre-hospital tracheal intubation by a UK-based Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) Hampshire & Is

Race- and Ethnicity-Specific Hospital Arrival and Emergency Medicine Service Activation Times by US State for Ischemic Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Delayed hospital arrival after 4.5 hours of stroke onset excludes patients from intravenous thrombolytic therapy. In the United States, prehospital triage is regulated by each state. Understanding race- and ethnicity-specific prehospital delays in each state could guide targeted interventions. METHODS: This cross-sectional study examined adult patients treated at the GWTG (Get With The Guidelines)-Stroke participating hospitals from January 2021 to August 2023 for acute ischemic stroke. The outcomes, including onset-to-arrival >4.5 hours, onset-to-911 call >2.5 hours, and 911 call
