The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) framework has contributed to advances in developmental science by examining the interdependent and cumulative nature of adverse childhood environmental exposures on life trajectories. Missing from the ACEs framework, however, is the role of pervasive and systematic oppression that afflicts certain racialized groups and that leads to persistent threat and deprivation. In the case of children from immigrant parents, the consequence of a limited ACEs framework is that clinicians and researchers fail to address the psychological violence inflicted on childr

Migration of unaccompanied immigrant and refugee youth has increased around the world in the last decade, peaking in 2014 in the United States and in 2015 in Europe. Youth are pushed to migrate without parents or guardians to escape war, persecution, gang violence, and extreme poverty in their country of origin. Youth are vulnerable to violence and abuse at the hands of smugglers during their journeys but show great courage and strength as they embark on their journey to a better life. The goal of this literature review is to provide a synthesis of empirical literature concerning this populati

OBJECTIVE: The United States benefits economically and socially from the diverse skill-set and innovative contributions of immigrants. By applying a socioecological framework with an equity lens, we aim to provide an overview of the health of children in immigrant families (CIF) in the United States, identify gaps in related research, and suggest future areas of focus to advance health equity.
METHODS: The literature review consisted of identifying academic and gray literature using a MeSH Database, Clinical Queries, and relevant keywords in 3 electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and

Recent changes in U.S. immigration policies and enforcement have precipitated a 300% rise in arrests and planned deportations. Although some family members face deportation, other family members may have state-sanctioned status. Such mixed status puts hundreds of thousands of families at risk of forced separation and associated mental health problems. Building on cross-cultural work with refugee families and other groups and on work with families separated by parental incarceration, the authors provide recommendations to guide clinicians working with families who are separated or who fear sepa

Previous estimates of the number of women and girls impacted by female genital mutilation and cutting (FGM/C) in the United States (US) failed to account for the impact of migration and acculturation. Similar studies in Europe applied a standard factor to estimate the impact across the entire immigrant population. Several of the resultant European estimates offered two scenarios: no impact, in which prevalence remained unaffected by migration and acculturation, and partial impact, in which risk was assumed to drop by 50% for native-born children. Each of these previous studies was based on ada

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether the place of birth would affect colon cancer survival.
METHODS: An observational study of colon cancer patient data using the SEER database from 1973 to 2010 was performed. Patients with more than one primary cancer in their lifetime or patients who were under age 18 were excluded. The primary outcome was cancer-specific survival. Cox proportional hazards analyses were performed, adjusting for patient demographics and oncological characteristics.
RESULTS: A total of 262,618 colon cancer patients were analyzed, with the majority (86.0%) born in the US. The ov

OBJECTIVES: The USA maintains the world's largest immigration detention system. This study examines the mechanisms by which detention serves as a catalyst for worsening health.
METHODS: Using data from detained immigrants in California (n = 493) from 2013 to 2014, we assessed the prevalence of exposure to conditions of confinement hypothesized to negatively influence health; the extent to which conditions of confinement are associated with psychological stress, diagnosed mental health conditions, and/or declines in general health; and the cumulative impact of confinement conditions on these o

Evidence is presented that, in Toronto, hyperthyroidism is significantly more prevalent in immigrants than in native-born patients. In a series of 4000 outpatients only eight of 1854 native-born patients were thyrotoxic, whereas 33 of 2146 immigrants proved to be so (p < 0.001). There is little likelihood that a genetic or nutritional predisposition accounted for the findings, because the immigrants came from widely scattered parts of the world. Possibly, the immigrants were reluctant to seek medical attention for minor illnesses, thereby giving rise to an apparent but not real increase of thy

BACKGROUND: Immigration Removal Centres (IRCs) are used to detain people for immigration control by the UK government. This scoping review aims to examine the experiences of detainees within UK IRCs, specifically how conditions within them, including the regime, affect their mental wellbeing.
METHODS: The Joanna Briggs Institute guideline for scoping reviews was followed. Six bibliographic databases and additional grey literature sources were searched for quantitative and qualitative evidence. Descriptive analyses and quality assessments were conducted.
RESULTS: Fifteen research studies and

Delayed Plasmodium falciparum malaria in immigrants from disease-endemic countries is rare. Such cases pose a challenge for public health because mosquitoborne transmission must be rigorously investigated. We report a case of delayed P. falciparum malaria in a pregnant woman with sickle cell trait 11 years after immigration to the United States.

This study aimed to investigate differences in work disability duration among immigrants (categorized as economic, family member or refugee/other classification upon arrival to Canada) compared to Canadian-born workers with a work-related injury in British Columbia. Immigrants and Canadian-born workers were identified from linked immigration records with workers' compensation claims for work-related back strain, connective tissue, concussion and fracture injuries requiring at least one paid day of work disability benefits between 2009 to 2015. Quantile regression investigated the relationship

BACKGROUND: While recent years have seen moderate progress toward more humanistic drug policy in the United States, the well-documented disproportionate incarceration of Black and Latino Americans continues largely unabated, and non-citizens are still frequently detained and deported based on drug-related crimes and violations. These processes draw from a long history of targeted drug enforcement that has served to scapegoat, punish, and exclude immigrants and native-born racial minorities, culminating in a modern War on Drugs intimately intertwined with processes of immigration and deportatio

Few studies integrate work and immigration as intersecting social determinants of health. We synthesize data from 12 focus groups (N = 97) originating from two separate community-engaged studies that originally centered on exploring barriers to health and hazards of work among immigrant Latinx women and men to explore the role of work in their overall health and well-being. The three major interrelated themes we drew from this research-hazards of work, value of work, and building agency to overcome risk-provide insights that can help to reframe and begin to operationalize how community-based h

Inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, Emma Lazarus's poem, The New Colossus,1 helped shape the image of the United States as a country compassionate toward the needs of those who emigrated to its shores. The United States has more immigrants than any other country in the world, estimated at more than 40 million people.2 Roughly 18 million children in the United States have at least 1 immigrant parent.2 Most immigrants in the United States arrive with the hope of better educational and economic opportunities.3 Although moving to a new country can offer new opportunities, stability, and safety, th

Immigrants play a critical role in the US childcare workforce, yet little is known about how immigration enforcement shapes employment in this essential sector. We study how the sharp escalation in community-based Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity following President Trump's inauguration in early 2025 affected childcare employment in the United States. Monthly data from the Current Population Survey are linked to compiled state-level ICE arrest records from September 2023 through September 2025, to ask how changes in enforcement intensity influence employment across childcare

Drawing inspiration from the reflective and liberating practice of testimonio, we narrated our experiences as two women of color precariously employed psychologists with US employment visas. Shirley Ley recounted an experience of lost identity as a psychologist at a small liberal arts institution while Shaznin Daruwalla wove a narrative of tested endurance in her role as a staff psychologist in a medium-sized state-funded academic institution. Despite our diverse origins-Canada and India respectively-we shared the intricate link between our immigration status and employment. This connection te

In most migrations some selection takes place either by the absorbing country and/or the individuals who emigrate. Israel has an open-door policy for immigrants and the recent large wave of immigrants from the former Soviet Union was made up of entire families rather than individuals. This provided an opportunity to examine the issue of migration and psychological distress more directly. A nationwide sample of 600 immigrants who arrived during the preceding year were interviewed in December 1990. Their psychological distress was measured by the PERI Demoralization questionnaire. For both gende

Entamoeba histolytica is a pathogenic protozoan endemic to Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. However, with increased travel and emigration, it is becoming a common parasitic infection leading to many worldwide deaths. We present a case of a young Hispanic male immigrant with an amebic liver abscess. This case report highlights the complexities of diagnosing and treating E. histolytica infection.

Eight years after emigrating from Brazil, an otherwise healthy man developed rabies. An exposure prior to immigration was reported. Genetic analysis revealed a canine rabies virus variant found only in the patient's home country, and the patient had not traveled internationally since immigrating to the United States. We describe how epidemiological, phylogenetic, and viral sequencing data provided confirmation that rabies encephalomyelitis may present after a long, multiyear incubation period, a consideration that previously has been hypothesized without the ability to exclude a more recent ex
