Narrative quality and disturbance pre- and post-emotion-focused therapy for child abuse trauma.

This study predicted that the quality of trauma narratives written before and following emotion-focused therapy for child abuse trauma would be positively associated with psychological disturbance before and following therapy. Narratives for 37 clients were coded for emotion words, temporal orientation, incoherence, and depth of experiencing. At pretreatment, negative emotion words and experiencing were correlated with abuse resolution, r(35) = -.36, and r(35) = -.34, respectively. At posttreatment, narrative incoherence was correlated with trauma symptoms, r(35) = .33, whereas present-future

Session-by-session client feeling and clarification processes over the course of emotion-focused therapy.

BACKGROUND: Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) is an effective form of psychotherapy for a range of psychological problems. While earlier research demonstrated the effect of in-session processes as being central for explaining the effects of EFT, it is unclear what the role of clients' self-reported quality of emotional processing assessed right after each therapy session is for the prediction of therapy outcome. Specifically, we are assuming that session-by-session trajectories of clients' self-assessed clarification processes and treatment outcome are moderated by their self-reported post-session

Process-experiential/emotion-focused therapy for social anxiety: a Hermeneutic Single-Case Efficacy Design study.

Social Anxiety (SA) is a common and debilitating problem. Although a range of therapies have been applied to treat SA, only a narrow range of these has been researched to date. In this study, Hermeneutic Single Case Efficacy Design (HSCED) was used to investigate Process-Experiential/Emotion-Focused Therapy (PE-EFT) with a socially isolated client with Social Anxiety. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative data, we constructed a rich case record and a set of documents arguing for and against client change; these were judged by three graduate student peer judges. The judges found t

Emotion-focused therapy and forgiveness in the older population: Protocol for a feasibility randomized controlled trial.

Over recent decades, Emotion-Focused Therapy, aging, and forgiveness have garnered significant attention in the field of psychology. However, there is a lack of studies on Emotion-Focused Therapy and forgiveness specifically tailored for older adults. This article presents a protocol designed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a randomized controlled trial of Emotion-Focused Therapy aimed at resolving emotional injuries in individuals aged 65 and older, within the context of interpersonal offenses. Feasibility will be evaluated through recruitment and retention rates, as well as ad

Young adult Latino testicular cancer survivors: a pilot study of Goal-focused Emotion regulation Therapy (GET).

PURPOSE: Young adult Latino testicular cancer survivors experience adverse impacts after treatment. We developed Goal-focused Emotion regulation Therapy (GET) to improve distress symptoms, goal navigation skills, and emotion regulation. This open pilot trial extended GET to Latino young adult survivors of testicular cancer and assessed feasibility and tolerability as well as changes in anxiety and depressive symptoms. Secondary outcomes included goal navigation, emotion regulation, and components of hope-related goal processes (i.e., agency and pathway mapping). To assess the extent to which G

Emotion-focused therapy for the treatment of social anxiety: an overview of the model and a case description.

Emotion-focused therapy (EFT) is an integrative and experiential treatment approach that views emotions as fundamentally adaptive and privileges attention to, and exploration of, emotional experiences. EFT has been demonstrated to be efficacious with depression, interpersonal trauma and marital discord, but application to anxiety disorders is in its initial stages. The purpose of this paper is to present the main principles of using EFT with socially anxious patients and to make the case that EFT is particularly well suited for working with this patient group. The primary change processes in E

Emotion-focused therapy in the treatment of prolonged grief disorder: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) impacts various dimensions of the bereaved person's life, such as psychological, social, and/or health domains. Psychological interventions, particularly those beyond the cognitive-behavioral approach, are essential to address these difficulties. This is especially relevant given that not all interventions are effective for all bereaved individuals, leaving a subset of people without adequate help. Emotion-Focused therapy (EFT) offers a promising alternative to support individuals suffering from PGD. METHODS/DESIGN: This protocol describes a two-arm

In situ fNIRS measurements during cognitive behavioral emotion regulation training in rumination-focused therapy: A randomized-controlled trial.

Repetitive negative thinking (RNT), including rumination, plays a key role in various psychopathologies. Although several psychotherapeutic treatments have been developed to reduce RNT, the neural correlates of those specific treatments and of psychotherapy in general are largely unknown. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) offers the potential to investigate the neural correlates of psychotherapeutic techniques in situ. Therefore, in this study we investigated the efficacy and neural correlates of a fNIRS adapted Mindfulness-based Emotion Regulation Training (MBERT) for the treatmen

The Development of the Working Alliance and Its Ability to Predict Outcome in Emotion-Focused Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder.

The study focuses on the alliance of 12 patients receiving emotion-focused therapy for social anxiety. Anxiety symptoms and patient perception of the working alliance were examined weekly. The first eight sessions of each patient were coded for within- and between-sessions alliance levels (1008 segments were coded). At the sample level, the alliance shows linear development over time but high variability between individuals. More than half the patients showed alliance development consistent with the rupture-resolution pattern. Without accounting for the temporal relationship between alliance a

The three circle model of compassion focused therapy: An experimental paradigm to assess dynamic psychophysiological changes of emotion regulation systems.

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is an integrated, evolutionary-informed biopsychosocial therapy model. Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses of CFT indicate that it is effective for a range of different clinical and non-clinical populations to improve overall mental health and wellbeing. Central to CFT is the tripartite model of emotion regulation, consisting of threat, drive, and soothing systems. The digital Three Circles Scale (d3CS), a novel measure of the tripartite model, has been validated with adults and teenagers, however, its link to physiological changes in controlled experi

A comparison of emotion-focused therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder: Results of a feasibility randomized controlled trial.

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic mental health difficulty typically present in primary care settings. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the psychological intervention with the best evidence for its efficacy for GAD. The development of other psychological interventions can increase client choice. This feasibility trial examined an initial assessment of the efficacy of EFT in comparison to CBT in the treatment of GAD in the context of an Irish public health service. The trial provided information on recruitment, therapist training/adherence, and client retention relevant for a

Emotion-focused therapy as a transdiagnostic treatment for depression, anxiety and related disorders: Protocol for an initial feasibility randomised control trial.

Background: Depression, anxiety and related disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorders and trauma/stressor related disorders, have high prevalence, chronic courses and cause significant impairment. These disorders are also highly co-morbid, and appear to share etiology and maintenance factors. Recent developments have seen the emergence of transdiagnostic approaches that systematically address the common/shared features of these disorders. A key advantage of transdiagnostic approaches is that they can reduce the pressure on mental health professionals to be proficient in a plethora of

Effects of five-minute internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy and simplified emotion-focused mindfulness on depressive symptoms: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Notwithstanding a high expectation for internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) for reducing depressive symptoms, many of iCBT programs have limitations such as temporary effects and high drop-out rates, possibly due to their complexity. We examined the effects of a free, simplified, 5-minute iCBT program by comparing it with a simplified emotion-focused mindfulness (sEFM) exercise and with a waiting list control group. METHODS: A total of 974 participants, who were recruited using the website of a market research company, were randomly assigned to the iCBT group, the sE

Emotion-focused therapy for incarcerated offenders of intimate partner violence: a 3-year outcome using a new whole-sample matching method.

A 3-year follow-up was conducted for Relating Without Violence, an emotion-focused group psychotherapy program for incarcerated men who have a history of intimate partner violence. This is the only known manualized experiential treatment for incarcerated batterers. A sample of 66 men who completed the treatment was compared to 184 men from the same prison. Although the initial research design was quasi-experimental, new procedures were used to match the groups' averages on all known pre-treatment variables. At 7 and 8 months post-release, the treatment group recidivated by assault and/or sexua
