Emotion regulation profiles, temperament, and adjustment problems in preadolescents.

The longitudinal relations of emotion regulation profiles to temperament and adjustment in a community sample of preadolescents (N=196, 8-11 years at Time 1) were investigated using person-oriented latent profile analysis (LPA). Temperament, emotion regulation, and adjustment were measured at 3 different time points, with each time point occurring 1 year apart. LPA identified 5 frustration and 4 anxiety regulation profiles based on children's physiological, behavioral, and self-reported reactions to emotion-eliciting tasks. The relation of effortful control to conduct problems was mediated by

Self-reports and spouse ratings of neuroticism: perspectives on emotional adjustment in couples.

Evidence of reciprocal associations between individual emotional adjustment and the quality of intimate relationships has led to the growing use of interventions that combine a focus on couple issues with a focus on individual emotional functioning. In these approaches, spouse ratings of emotional functioning can provide an important second method of assessment, beyond the much more commonly used self-reports. Although an extensive literature demonstrates substantial convergent correlations between self-reported and spouse-rated emotional adjustment, levels of adjustment evident across these 2

An online emotional regulation system to deliver homework assignments for treating adjustment disorders.

Adjustment Disorders (AD) is a very common mental health problem in primary care. Only general treatment guidelines are available for its treatment. Our research team has developed a cognitive-behavioural treatment (CBT) supported by Virtual reality (EMMA system) that has shown its utility in the treatment of AD. EMMA is a VR adaptive display that adapts its presentation to the patient' therapeutic needs. So far, researchers have been centered on how to use the Information and Communication Technologies to deliver treatment within the therapeutic context. TEO is a completely open Online Emotio

Do perceived popular adolescents who aggress against others experience emotional adjustment problems themselves?

Aggression is associated with a host of behavioral, social, and emotional adjustment difficulties. However, some aggressive youth are perceived as "popular" by peers. Although these perceived popular aggressive youth appear relatively well adjusted, especially in the social domain, the emotional well-being of these youth is understudied. The current findings indicate that perceived popularity buffers adolescents who hurt others through relational aggression from internalizing symptoms. In contrast, perceived popularity did not buffer adolescents who engaged in overt verbal and physical aggress

Depression, demoralisation or adjustment disorder? Understanding emotional distress in the severely medically ill.

As emotional distress is often seen as an understandable reaction to a severe or life-threatening illness, clinicians are reluctant to make a diagnosis of depression and resort to alternative diagnoses such as adjustment disorder (AD) or demoralisation. This paper introduces these concepts and critically examines their clinical utility. It concludes that neither AD nor demoralisation can be clearly distinguished from depression on variables such as clinical symptoms, outcome or treatment response. Since AD and demoralisation are considered transient or understandable reactions, the risk of usi

Gestational diabetes mellitus and children's social-emotional development, behavioral problems, and psychological adjustment.

BACKGROUND: This longitudinal cohort study investigated whether gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is associated with 2- and 5-year-old children's social-emotional development and whether child sex moderates the association. METHODS: FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study recruited 3808 pregnant women 2011-2015 in Finnish Turku region and Åland Islands. Their children's social-emotional development at 2 years was measured by Brief Infant Toddler Social Emotional Assessment (BITSEA) (N = 1444, GDM n = 227) and at 5 years by Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) (N = 1489, GDM n = 225). Childhood emotional abuse and attachment processes in the dyadic adjustment of dating couples.

In an effort to improve understanding of the mechanisms that link early maltreatment to later outcomes, this study investigated the mediation effects of adult attachment processes on the association between childhood emotional abuse and later romantic relationships among heterosexual couples. College students and their dating partners (N = 310; 155 couples) completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Experiences in Close Relationship Scale, and Dyadic Adjustment Scale. Using the Actor–Partner Interdependence Model (Kenny, Kashy, & Cook, 2006), multilevel modeling results indicated that memor

[Self-esteem, self-centeredness and social-emotional adjustment of gifted children and adolescents].

BACKGROUND: There is an ongoing debate of how giftedness affects social-emotional adjustment. Self-esteem may be an indicator of social-emotional adjustment but insufficient in its explanatory capacity, especially high self-esteem which tends to produce opposite responses in regards to adjustment. A distinction between defensive and genuine high self-esteem could account for these results. In order to understand how self-esteem operates on social-emotional adjustment, it should be associated with other measurements relating to self-concern. In the Rorschach comprehensive system (CS), egocentri

The role of head injury in cognitive functioning, emotional adjustment and criminal behaviour.

In two investigations, 50% of non-violent convicted felons, who avoided incarceration by participating in a day reporting programme, reported a prior history of head injury and current problems in cognitive and emotional functioning. Only 5% of a college sample in the first investigation and 15% of a community sample in the second investigation reported prior head injury. In a third investigation, 83% of felons who had reported a history of head injury also reported a date for their head injury that preceded the date of their first encounter with law enforcement. Some participants reported no

Social and emotional adjustment of adolescents extremely talented in verbal or mathematical reasoning.

Perceptions of self-esteem, locus of control, popularity, depression (or unhappiness), and discipline problems as indices of social and emotional adjustment were investigated in highly verbally or mathematically talented adolescents. Compared to a group of students who are much less gifted, the highly gifted students perceive themselves as less popular, but no differences were found in self-esteem, depression, or the incidence of discipline problems. The gifted students reported greater internal locus of control. Comparisons between the highly mathematically talented students and the highly ve

Emotion polyregulation in preschoolers: Links to negative affect and child adjustment.

This study examines preschoolers' use of multiple emotion regulation strategies (i.e., polyregulation) and their link to negative affect and adjustment. Fifty-seven children (51% girls; Mage = 4.26 years, SD = 1.04; 68% White, 7% Hispanic, 4% Asian, and 21% multiracial) participated in a laboratory frustration task in 2023. The number of strategies used (variety), the frequency of strategy change (switching), and the extent to which strategies were used with similar frequency (diversity) were used as indices of polyregulation. Younger preschoolers used less polyregulation than older children,

Household chaos, emotion regulation and social adjustment in preschool children.

Social adjustment is critical to preschool children's overall development and well-being. Household chaos and emotion regulation are important influencing factors that affect young children's social adjustment. Our study examines the interplay between household chaos and social adjustment among preschool children and investigates the mediating function of emotion regulation. Three parent report scales with sufficient reliability and validity were completed by parents from six kindergartens: the Confusion, Hubbub and Order Scale (CHAOS), Emotion Regulation Checklist (ERC), and Social Competence

The Role of Dyadic Coping on the Marital and Emotional Adjustment of Couples With Infertility.

Infertility is a challenging experience, affecting individual and couples' adjustment. However, the way the members of the couple support each other may affect the experience of infertility and their adjustment. This study aimed to investigate the role of dyadic coping by oneself and by the partner in the association between the impact of infertility and dyadic and emotional adjustment (anxiety and depression) to infertility. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 134 participants (67 couples with infertility) completed self-report questionnaires assessing infertility-related stress, dyadic

Risk and Adversity, Parenting Quality, and Children's Social-Emotional Adjustment in Families Experiencing Homelessness.

A multimethod, multi-informant design was used to examine links among sociodemographic risk, family adversity, parenting quality, and child adjustment in families experiencing homelessness. Participants were 245 homeless parents (Mage  = 31.0, 63.6% African American) and their 4- to 6-year-old children (48.6% male). Path analyses revealed unique associations by risk domain: Higher sociodemographic risk predicted more externalizing behavior and poorer teacher-child relationships, whereas higher family adversity predicted more internalizing behavior. Parenting quality was positively associated w

Neurologic music therapy improves executive function and emotional adjustment in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation.

This study examined the immediate effects of neurologic music therapy (NMT) on cognitive functioning and emotional adjustment with brain-injured persons. Four treatment sessions were held, during which participants were given a pre-test, participated in 30 min of NMT that focused on one aspect of rehabilitation (attention, memory, executive function, or emotional adjustment), which was followed by post-testing. Control participants engaged in a pre-test, 30 min of rest, and then a post-test. Treatment participants showed improvement in executive function and overall emotional adjustment, and l

A history of sexual, emotional, or physical abuse predicts adjustment during opioid maintenance treatment.

This study examined how having a history of sexual, physical, or emotional abuse is related to overall functioning as assessed by the Addiction Severity Index during short-term opioid maintenance treatment with either buprenorphine/naloxone or methadone. Furthermore, the relation between abuse history and overall functioning by sex was explored. Participants (N = 268) were opioid-dependent adults entering an outpatient randomized clinical trial with buprenorphine/naloxone and methadone. Latent growth modeling indicated that females with an abuse history entered treatment with more problems in

The adolescent outcome of hyperactive children: predictors of psychiatric, academic, social, and emotional adjustment.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate predictors of adolescent outcome in a large sample of hyperactive children. METHOD: 123 hyperactive children were followed prospectively over an 8-year period. Multiple linear and logistical regression equations were used to relate childhood predictor variables to adolescent academic, psychiatric, social, and emotional adjustment. RESULTS: Adolescent academic skills were related to childhood cognitive and academic competence while school conduct was predicted by other variables including early family stress. Duration of mental health treatment received often was neg

Group-based parent training programmes for improving emotional and behavioural adjustment in young children.

BACKGROUND: Emotional and behavioural problems in children are common. Research suggests that parenting has an important role to play in helping children to become well-adjusted, and that the first few months and years are especially important. Parenting programmes may have a role to play in improving the emotional and behavioural adjustment of infants and toddlers, and this review examined their effectiveness with parents and carers of young children. OBJECTIVES: 1. To establish whether group-based parenting programmes are effective in improving the emotional and behavioural adjustment of yo

One minute of grief: emotional processing in short-term dynamic psychotherapy for adjustment disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Depth of emotional processing has shown to be related to outcome across approaches to psychotherapy. Moreover, a specific emotional sequence has been postulated and tested in several studies on experiential psychotherapy (Pascual-Leone & Greenberg, 2007). This process-outcome study aims at reproducing the sequential model of emotional processing in psychodynamic psychotherapy for adjustment disorder and linking these variables with ultimate therapeutic outcome. METHOD: In this study, 32 patients underwent short-term dynamic psychotherapy. On the basis of reliable clinical change st

Early adolescents (Grades 6-8) with multiple learning disabilities (LD; reading and math) in inclusive settings were compared to adolescents with single LD (reading or math) and typically achieving (TA) peers regarding their psychosocial functioning in two areas of adolescent well-being: emotional adjustment and school functioning. The Behavior Assessment System for Children (Reynolds & Kamphaus, 1998) Self-Report of Personality for adolescents was used to determine well-being. One hundred twenty middle school students-15 boys and 15 girls in each group-were included in the current study. The
