AIM: The aim of this study is to examine emotional processing of infant displays in people with Eating Disorders (EDs).
BACKGROUND: Social and emotional factors are implicated as causal and maintaining factors in EDs. Difficulties in emotional regulation have been mainly studied in relation to adult interactions, with less interest given to interactions with infants.
METHOD: A sample of 138 women were recruited, of which 49 suffered from Anorexia Nervosa (AN), 16 from Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and 73 were healthy controls (HCs). Attentional responses to happy and sad infant faces were tested wit

The present study investigated the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and emotional eating in a sample of medically healthy and medication-free adults. Participants with PTSD (n = 44) and control participants free of lifetime psychiatric history (n = 49) completed a measure of emotional eating. Emotional eating is the tendency to eat or overeat in response to negative emotions. PTSD participants exhibited greater emotional eating than control participants (η(2) = .20) and emotional eating increased with higher PTSD symptom severity (R(2) = .11). Results supported the s

Emotions are considered to be an important feature in eating disorders. The present study aimed to conduct a systematic review and metasynthesis of qualitative studies, which considered the role of emotions in eating disorders in order to gain further insight on how these individuals experience various emotions and the strategies they use to manage them. Databases including Web of Science, PsychInfo, EMBASE, Medline, and the Cochrane library were searched for qualitative studies. The search identified 16 relevant studies. Meta-ethnography was used to synthesize the data, which involved identif

OBJECTIVES: The relationship between emotional states and eating behaviors is complex, and emotional eating has been identified as a possible factor triggering binge eating in bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder. Few studies considered emotional eating in patients with anorexia nervosa.
METHODS: The present study evaluated the clinical correlates of emotional eating in 251 eating-disordered (EDs) subjects (70 AN restricting type, 71 AN binge eating/purging type, 110 BN purging type) and in a group of 89 healthy control subjects. Subjects were assessed by means of a clinical intervi

Current explanatory models for binge eating in binge eating disorder (BED) mostly rely on models for bulimia nervosa (BN), although research indicates different antecedents for binge eating in BED. This study investigates antecedents and maintaining factors in terms of positive mood, negative mood and tension in a sample of 22 women with BED using ecological momentary assessment over a 1-week. Values for negative mood were higher and those for positive mood lower during binge days compared with non-binge days. During binge days, negative mood and tension both strongly and significantly increas

The experiences of seven academicians at a private university with emotional eating were examined. Data driven by face-to-face interviews and food diaries were analyzed by using reflexive thematic analysis via MAXQDA. Three overarching themes: (i) Feeding the tension: Stress-induced emotional eating, (ii) Treat or threat? Coping with emotional and social triggers, (iii) Tug of war-Comfort vs. control arose from in-depth interviews using reflective thematic analysis. The findings of the study highlight the importance of addressing work-related stressors, personal life pressures, and eating patt

Overeating may be a consequence of the suppression of negative emotions, by depleting self-control resources. This experiment investigated whether (a) there is a causal relationship between the suppression of negative emotions, negative mood, and overeating in people with binge eating disorder (BED) and whether (b) this relationship is increased in depressed people with BED. Sixty-six women with (full and sub-threshold) BED were shown an upsetting movie and then asked either to suppress their emotions or to react naturally. Subsequently, everyone participated in a taste task. After a decline,

OBJECTIVE: Several models of eating disorders (EDs) suggest that emotions and eating influence each other in a vicious cycle, producing part of the observed symptoms. However, no research tested whether such cycles exist across EDs. We therefore explored networks of prospective relationships between negative and positive emotions and eating-related behaviors (hunger, food craving, calorie intake, and binges) across EDs and healthy controls (HCs).
METHOD: These variables were assessed six times a day for eight days in women with restrictive (AN-R, N = 29) and binge-purge (AN-BP, N = 26) Anorex

Disordered eating behaviors (DEB) are more common in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) than in peers without diabetes. Emotional eating is a risk factor for binge eating in children and adolescents in the general population and is associated with increased intake of high energy-dense foods rich in sugars and fats. The primary objective is to evaluate whether emotional eating is associated with the metabolic control (glycated hemoglobin, plasma lipids and uric acid) in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and whether subjects with DEB (DEPS-R ≥ 20) have higher emotional eating tha

We aimed to examine whether a maternal history of eating disorders predicted mothers' feeding practices and preschoolers' emotional eating patterns. Data were available from 4851 mothers and their children, who participated in a Dutch population-based cohort study (the Generation R Study). Maternal history of lifetime eating disorders was assessed during pregnancy using a self-report questionnaire. Mothers filled out the Child Feeding Questionnaire and the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire when children were four years old. Linear regression analyses were performed, adjusting for potential

OBJECTIVE: To examine the influence of emotional eating and lack of cognitive reappraisal on eating pathology in women with binge-purge and restricting type eating disorders.
METHOD: Women with a diagnosis of anorexia or bulimia nervosa according to the DSM-IV-tr (n = 50) and non-clinical women without eating disorders (n = 52) were asked about emotional eating tendencies, adaptive emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal) and eating pathology symptoms.
RESULTS: In binge-purging women, emotional eating with limited use of cognitive reappraisal predicted level of eating pathology

Emotional- and stress-eating have been proposed as risk factors for obesity. However, the way that individuals conceptualize these behaviors is not well understood and no studies have employed a qualitative approach. We sought to understand how women conceptualize emotional- and stress-eating. Sixty-one low-income women from South-central Michigan with young children (ages 2-5 years) participated in either a focus group or individual semi-structured interview during which they were asked about their conceptualizations of eating behaviors among adults and children. Responses were transcribed an

Acculturative stress, arising from cultural and psychological changes following intercultural contact, may increase vulnerability to maladaptive coping behaviors, including emotional eating. Evidence suggests that the association between acculturative stress and disordered eating differs by sex; however, Arab migrant populations remain underrepresented in this field. This study aimed to examine sex-stratified, migration-related predictors of emotional eating among Arab migrants living in Türkiye. This cross-sectional research was conducted between June 2022 and March 2024 and included 528 adul

Ruminative thinking, a repetitive focus on negative emotions, may prolong stress responses and promote maladaptive eating, yet stress, ruminative thinking, and eating behaviour are usually studied in isolation. This study examined factors independently associated with ruminative thinking, focusing on perceived stress, emotional eating, and emotional appetite in community-based adults. This cross-sectional study recruited 626 adults aged 18 years or older from public settings in Izmir, Türkiye, from January to May 2023. Face-to-face questionnaires used four validated instruments, the Ruminative

OBJECTIVES: Contemporary models of eating disorders (EDs) argue that both cognitive style (weak coherence and poor set shifting) and social emotional difficulties are involved in the maintenance of EDs. This study aimed to explore the factor structure of cognitive and social emotional functioning and to investigate whether a particular cognitive or social emotional profile was associated with a more severe and chronic form of illness.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was used to investigate cognitive and social emotional functioning in people with EDs compared to healthy controls (HCs) and th

BACKGROUND: Many individuals with an eating disorder report experience of an internal 'voice' which represents their disorder. However, research exploring the aetiology of this phenomenon is still limited. Past research has identified associations between adverse childhood experiences, emotional difficulties and eating pathology. Recent qualitative evidence suggests that the 'voice' specifically may be of relevance in this model; developing during difficult times in an individual's life and offering a sense of safety and guidance amidst adversity and associated emotional difficulties. The pres

Expressed Emotion (EE) is a measure of family interaction that has been shown to be useful for the investigation of many psychiatric disorders. This paper describes why it is appropriate to use it for the investigation of eating disorders. There is discussion of the findings that the levels tend to vary between the different eating disorders. The relationship between EE and treatment response is discussed. Suggestions are made for further research.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the impact of a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-based counseling program on emotional regulation (ER) and emotional eating (EE) among overweight female students. The program incorporated four core DBT modules: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness.
METHOD: A sample of 68 female students at a public university in Saudi Arabia was selected for a quasi-experiment. The participants were divided equally into two groups: an experimental group (n = 34) and a control group (n = 34). The dependent variables (ER and E

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent children of US service members (i.e., military-dependent youth) face unique stressors that increase risk for various forms of disinhibited eating, including emotional eating. Difficulties with adaptively responding to stress and aversive emotions may play an important role in emotional eating. This study examined emotion dysregulation as a potential moderator of the association between perceived stress and emotional eating in adolescent military dependents.
METHOD: Participants were military-dependent youth (N = 163, 57.7% female, Mage = 14.5 ± 1.6, MBMI-z = 1.9 ± 0.4) a
