Predicting emotions across schizotypy levels.

Successfully navigating the social world requires making accurate predictions about others. Individual differences in emotion prediction-the ability to predict someone's subsequent emotion given their current emotional state-can lead to variability in social success. In this study (N = 1024) we found evidence that individuals with heightened schizotypy displayed worse emotion prediction accuracy. This difficulty with emotion prediction was associated with increased loneliness, diminished social support, and smaller social networks, partially mediating some of the social difficulties in individ

Virtual emotions and Criminal Law.

This article examines the role that Criminal Law should play in regulating the non-therapeutic use of immersive Virtual Reality (VR), specifically its massive use by consumers. The starting point has been to consider VR as an intermediate risk scenario, for the purposes of Criminal Law, between the criminality entirely generated in the physical world and that developed in the 2D digital environments [cybercrimes and criminality linked to social networks and persuasive Artificial Intelligence (AI)]. Firstly, specialize literature has been analyzed to establish the nature of virtual reality. Fro

The Challenge of "Defining" Emotions.

Taking a cognitive perspective on emotions as generally exemplified by appraisal theories, I suggest that attempts to "define" emotions is a theoretical exercise whose goal should be to specify necessary and jointly sufficient conditions for something to be an emotion. To this end, I advance arguments in support of the proposal that genuine emotions have the five necessary characteristics of being (i) intentional (i.e., about something), (ii) personally significant, (iii) valenced, (iv) consciously experienced, and (v) insuppressible. Collectively, these properties distinguish emotions from ot

Further evidence for mixed emotions.

Emotion theorists have long debated whether valence, which ranges from pleasant to unpleasant states, is an irreducible aspect of the experience of emotion or whether positivity and negativity are separable in experience. If valence is irreducible, it follows that people cannot feel happy and sad at the same time. Conversely, if positivity and negativity are separable, people may be able to experience such mixed emotions. The authors tested several alternative interpretations for prior evidence that happiness and sadness can co-occur in bittersweet situations (i.e., those containing both pleas

[Alcohol, emotions, stress and work].

The uncompromising struggle against drunkenness and alcoholism can be successful provided that not only social but also biomedical nature of the phenomenon is adequately understood. It is important to note that alcoholism is the most widespread type of drug addiction which results in the mental dependence on the induced euphoria state and deceptive anti-stress effect. In fact, alcohol, even in low doses, causes erroneous assessment of current events, impairment of the performance level and degradation of normal relationships with other people. Euphoria which is subjectively perceived as a happ

Developing kind emotions in caring environments.

Kind emotions (e.g. empathy for others, self-compassion and gratitude) motivate kind actions and involve understanding, appreciating or 'feeling with' both one's own and others' emotions. They are an essential capacity for humans' potential to care for fellow humans and non-human entities. How do such emotions evolve, and what type of caring environments and mechanisms are needed for their development? In this review, we provide insights into how children's kind emotions emerge, develop and are nurtured by caring environments. We begin by reviewing the development of kind emotions across the e

Emotions amplify speaker-listener neural alignment.

Individuals often align their emotional states during conversation. Here, we reveal how such emotional alignment is reflected in synchronization of brain activity across speakers and listeners. Two "speaker" subjects told emotional and neutral autobiographical stories while their hemodynamic brain activity was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The stories were recorded and played back to 16 "listener" subjects during fMRI. After scanning, both speakers and listeners rated the moment-to-moment valence and arousal of the stories. Time-varying similarity of the blood-oxy

Children's expressed emotions when disclosing maltreatment.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to examine children's expressed emotions when they disclose maltreatment. Little scientific research exists on this topic, and yet children's emotional expressions at disclosure may inform psychological theory and play a crucial role in legal determinations. METHOD: One hundred and twenty-four videotaped forensic interviews were coded for children's emotional displays. In addition, children's trauma-related symptoms (depression, dissociation, and PTSD) and global adaptive functioning were assessed, and abuse type and frequency were documented. RESULTS: Most children i

Dissociable neural systems for recognizing emotions.

This study tested the hypothesis that the recognition of emotions would draw upon anatomically separable brain regions, depending on whether the stimuli were static or explicitly conveyed information regarding actions. We investigated the hypothesis in a rare subject with extensive bilateral brain lesions, patient B., by administering tasks that assessed recognition and naming of emotions from visual and verbal stimuli, some of which depicted actions and some of which did not. B. could not recognize any primary emotion other than happiness, when emotions were shown as static images or given as

[Negative emotions associated with cardiovascular diseases].

With regard to cardiovascular health, the role of negative emotions, particularly that of depression, anxiety, vital exhaustion and hostility has been studied the most widely. Mainly the somatic symptoms of depression and, out of anxiety disorders, generalised anxiety and panic disorder have been linked to cardiovascular diseases. Based on an analysis of interviews of patients having suffered myocardial infarction, it was found that vital exhaustion (a combination of loss of energy, increased irritability, and general demoralization) is a precursor of infarction. Vital exhaustion has proven to

[Systemic biopsychological perspective of basic emotions].

The systemic biopsychological perspective of basic emotions is a heuristic model that allows a better understanding of how people learn to adapt to their environment through different emotions that developed gradually along neurohormonal circuit myelination from birth until about the age of twenty-one. These same emotions, acting in complementarity, will allow the individual to maintain a balance throughout his life.Five basic emotions were retained in line with the five emotions related to neuronal circuits, which are defined in the literature, and these are the five circuits described by Pan

Personality, Emotions, and the Emotional Disorders.

We examined symptom-level relations between the emotional disorders and general traits within the five-factor model of personality. Neuroticism correlated strongly with the general distress/negative affectivity symptoms (depressed mood, anxious mood, worry) that are central to these disorders; more moderately with symptoms of social phobia, affective lability, panic, posttraumatic stress disorder, lassitude, checking, and obsessive intrusions; and more modestly with agoraphobia, specific phobia, and other symptoms of depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Extraversion was negatively cor

Functional aspects of emotions in fish.

There is an ongoing scientific discussion on whether fish have emotions, and if so how they experience them? The discussion has incorporated important areas such as brain anatomy and function, physiological and behavioural responses, and the cognitive abilities that fish possess. Little attention has however, been directed towards what functional aspects emotions ought to have in fish. If fish have emotions - why? The elucidation of this question and an assessment of the scientific evidences of emotions in fish in an evolutionary and functional framework would represent a valuable contribution

Bulimia nervosa: emotions and making decisions.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to add to the knowledge of the neurobiology and aetiopathogenesis of bulimia nervosa, a common disorder in routine clinical practice. To do this, we will study decision making in low risk and low uncertainty patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study consisted of 19 females who fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of bulimia nervosa according to the DSM-IV and a control group of 28 healthy female students from the Faculty of Psychology. They performed two tasks: one a "cups task" risk and the other an "ambiguity task", both associated with emotions and de

[The role of emotions in psychopathology].

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, functional fMRI was used to test the influence of induced emotions on a non-affective, attention-demanding, cognitive task. METHOD: Twelve healthy males viewed blocks of affective pictures. Between picture presentation a Simon-paradigm was presented. In an alternating way blocks with stimulus-response compatible and incompatible trials were presented. RESULTS: Emotion induction differentially influenced cortical activation patterns. In negative mood incompatible trials in contrast to compatible trials lead to significant decrease of activity in emotion relate

Disparate emotions? The play of emotions in clinical histories and patients' letters (Pinel Sanatorium, SP/Brazil - 1929-1944).

The Pinel Sanatorium, the brainchild of Doctor Antonio Carlos Pacheco e Silva, a leading figure in Brazilian psychiatry, was inaugurated in 1929 in São Paulo as a private institution. It operated until 1944, during which time it recorded approximately 4,500 hospitalisations. In 30 psychiatric records, in addition to the usual clinical records, such as the Psychiatric Examination - in which the doctor records the elements he deems essential for identifying the mental illness from different sources of information, such as those provided by family members - attachments were found containing lette

Connecting Through Emotions: A Social Constructivist Grounded Theory on How Palliative Care Clinicians Use Their Emotions During Consultations.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care clinicians are regularly exposed to emotionally laden situations. While emotions are an intrinsic part of their encounters with patients and relatives, the role of clinicians' own emotions has remained understudied. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore how palliative care clinicians use their emotions during end-of-life care consultations. DESIGN: We conducted a qualitative study using individual interviews with palliative care clinicians from different backgrounds and countries. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-two palliative care clinicians from 10 different countries participat

Clinical utility of diagnosing limited prosocial emotions in young children using the Clinical Assessment of Prosocial Emotions (CAPE).

This study evaluated the interrater reliability, convergent and divergent validity, incremental validity, and clinical prognostic utility of the Clinical Assessment of Prosocial Emotions (CAPE; Frick, 2013) for assessing limited prosocial emotions (LPE). Participants were 232 young children (Mage = 3.94 years, SD = 1.46, range = 2-8; 74.6% boys) clinic-referred for conduct problems. We scored the CAPE using binary and dimensional scoring approaches and measured outcomes using parent-report and child laboratory measures. CAPE LPE symptom ratings had good interrater reliability. Children diagnos
