[Sociophysiology: basic processes of empathy].

The aim of this review is to describe sociophysiological and social cognitive processes that underlie the complex phenomenon of human empathy. Automatic reflexive processes such as physiological contagion and action mirroring are mediated by the mirror neuron system. They are a basis for further processing of social signals and a physiological link between two individuals. This link comprises simultaneous activation of shared motor representations. Shared representations lead implicitly via individual associations in the limbic and vegetative system to a shared affective state. These processes

Investigating associations between cognitive empathy, affective empathy and anxiety in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is strongly associated with socio-cognitive impairments that may result in vulnerability to other mental health conditions, particularly anxiety disorders. This study examined the relationship between anxiety disorders and two key socio-cognitive impairments (cognitive empathy, affective empathy) in 60 adolescents (aged 11-18 years) with and without ASD. Adolescents with ASD showed cognitive empathy was negatively associated with separation anxiety disorder, whereas positive associations between affective empathy and generalized anxiety disorder, and positive mar

Drawing toward empathy-Physician communication.

A message in an app from her doctor following a routine colon cancer screening inspired the author to conceive of the drawing "physician communication." The author created the drawing so she could digest the words the doctor said-cellular, polyp, early-stage. As the author thought about their medical visit more, it struck her how big the issue of physician communication is, and how it has been an enormous challenge in my life. So many words are shared, and so much meaning is lost in translation. For the author, the drawing captures the essence of her medical visit because it represents the phy

[Art, empathy and suicide prevention].

Empathy for patients is not only learned through reasoning, but also through sensitivity. Art, reflecting the human emotional dimension, has its place as an educational resource in the training of health professionals. Caregivers must be competent to collect the psychological pain associated with suicidal risk, which is a prerequisite for any preventive action. Since facilitating empathy also protects against burn-out, there is much to be gained by promoting educational programs of artistic observation.

Conduct Disorders and Empathy Development.

Childhood conduct disorders, a serious mental health concern, put children at risk for significant mental health problems throughout development. Elevations on callous-unemotional (CU) traits designate a subgroup of youth with conduct disorders who have unique causal processes underlying their problem behavior and are at a particularly high risk for serious impairment relative to others with these disorders. As a result, these traits have recently been integrated into major diagnostic classification systems for conduct disorders. Given that CU traits are partly defined by deficits in empathy,

Cognition, empathy, and sexual offending.

Most empathy research in the forensic context has assumed that empathy has two components. In this two-component model, the cognitive component involves perspective taking, and the affective component involves experiencing appropriate emotion. In this review, we identify how this assumption has both dominated and limited empathy research with offenders, nearly all of which has been conducted with sexual offenders. We propose instead that five components are involved in the experience of empathy: perspective taking, the ability to experience emotion, a belief that others are worthy of compassio

Understanding empathy and related phenomena.

Over a period of time, the author arrived at a few tentative postulates concerning empathy and related processes based on some of his experiences and observations. The central theme of these postulates is, firstly, that interpersonal interaction is an interaction of the personal-space fields. Secondly, empathy, therapeutic benefit, and the professional stress are all related to the same process of interpersonal interaction. This interaction takes place as an enmeshment of personal spaces of the interacting individuals, and involves transfer of a wide range of information in the affective, cogn

Empathy and alexithymia in essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Social cognition is increasingly recognized as part of the non-motor phenotype of essential tremor (ET). Available ET evidence suggests selective alterations in some socio-cognitive domains, whereas findings on self-reported empathy and alexithymia remain limited and inconsistent. OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate empathy and alexithymia in patients with ET compared with healthy controls (HC), and to explore their associations with global cognition and with each other. METHODS: Forty ET patients and 40 HC underwent the Italian versions of the Montreal Cogni

The phenomenology of depression and the nature of empathy.

This paper seeks to illuminate the nature of empathy by reflecting upon the phenomenology of depression. I propose that depression involves alteration of an aspect of experience that is seldom reflected upon or discussed, thus making it hard to understand. This alteration involves impairment or loss of a capacity for interpersonal relatedness that mutual empathy depends upon. The sufferer thus feels cut off from other people, and may remark on their indifference, hostility or inability to understand. Drawing upon the example of depression, I argue that empathy is not principally a matter of 's

Therapist Empathy and the Therapist's Feelings.

This article seeks to clarify and distinguish how phenomenological definitions of empathy may be applied in psychotherapy. It argues that effective therapeutic practice relies not only on narrative engagement but also on embodied attunement, often referred to as empathic resonance. Rather than viewing the therapist's feelings as passive emotional mirroring of the client, the authors propose a critical and situated perspective in which these feelings are understood as embodied responses that emerge within the therapeutic relationship. In doing so, the authors aim to contribute to the enhancemen

[Empathy in palliative care of the elderly].

Empathy is fundamental to care, particularly geriatric and palliative care, as it responds to the complex, multidimensional needs of older adults. However, empathy can be risky, and requires ongoing training. Concrete strategies and techniques exist to facilitate the expression of empathy when caring for people at the end of life, and their loved ones, and to support the care team in preserving human dignity, even at the end of life.

Review of The empathy exams: Essays.

Reviews the book The empathy exams: Essays. Empathy is a universally important aspect of both life and medicine that helps cultivate a therapeutic relationship between healthcare professionals and patients, family and loved ones, community members and friends, and beyond. As the times have evolved, empathy has become increasingly essential in not only elevating the quality of patient-centered care but also nurturing meaningful relationships and compassionate bonds among communities and families. Empathy encompasses an emotional understanding of another's pain and suffering and also invites sel

Empathy: shared circuits and their dysfunctions.

Observing another individual acting upon an object triggers cerebral activity well beyond the visual cortex of the observer in areas directly involved in planning and executing actions. This we will call action simulation. Importantly, the brain does not solely simulate the actions of others but also the sensations they feel, and their emotional responses. These simulation mechanisms are most active in individuals who report being very empathic. Simulation may indeed be instrumental for our understanding of the emotional and mental state of people in our sight, and may contribute heavily to th

Ethics, Empathy, and Attitudes: Exploring the Mediating Role of Empathy in Social Workers' Perspectives Toward Disability.

This study examines the relationships among professional ethical sensitivity, empathy, and attitudes toward individuals with disabilities among active social workers, specifically focusing on the mediating role of empathy as an "emotional bridge." Employing a cross-sectional correlational survey design, data were collected from 355 social workers. Participants completed validated scales measuring professional ethical sensitivity, empathic tendencies, and attitudes toward disability. A mediation analysis was conducted using Hayes' PROCESS Macro (Model 4) with 5000 bootstrap samples. The results

Dissociation of cognitive and emotional empathy in adults with Asperger syndrome using the Multifaceted Empathy Test (MET).

Empathy is a multidimensional construct consisting of cognitive (inferring mental states) and emotional (empathic concern) components. Despite a paucity of research, individuals on the autism spectrum are generally believed to lack empathy. In the current study we used a new, photo-based measure, the Multifaceted Empathy Test (MET), to assess empathy multidimensionally in a group of 17 individuals with Asperger syndrome (AS) and 18 well-matched controls. Results suggested that while individuals with AS are impaired in cognitive empathy, they do not differ from controls in emotional empathy. Le

Empathy in female submissive BDSM practitioners.

The practice of bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, sadism/masochism (BDSM) sometimes is associated with giving and receiving pain. It remains unresolved how BDSM practitioners perceive the pain of other people. This study investigated whether and how the BDSM experience affects human empathy. Experiment 1 measured trait empathy and subjective empathic responses in BDSM practitioners and control respondents. The results revealed lower trait empathy scores and subjective pain intensity ratings in the female submissive group (Subs) compared to controls. Experiment 2 measured participants'

What We Talk About When We Talk About Empathy: Toward a Common Lexicon of Empathy-Related Constructs.

Almost since the term "empathy" was coined, there has been scholarly disagreement about its meaning. Today it can best be viewed as an umbrella term encompassing a host of more specific constructs, almost all of which are regularly referred to as "empathy" in some form or fashion. Promiscuous use of this global label to denote very different constructs has impaired communication among and between scholars, practitioners, and the general public. A team of 15 empathy scholars assessed this issue and created a lexicon for these specific lower-order constructs. In this article we report the result
