Hypoallergenic and non-toxic emollient therapies for children.

There are many anatomical and functional differences between the skin of young children and adult skin. As a consequence, the skin is more easily irritated by topical agents. There is also increased transcutaneous absorption; the latter effect is amplified by underlying conditions such as ichthyoses and atopic dermatitis with defects of the epidermal barrier. Common topical agents such as salicylic acid and lactic acid can cause life-threatening intoxications. The relevance of transcutaneous absorption of "hidden" ingredients such as polyethylene glycol and preservatives is unknown at present.

Food emulsions stabilized by proteins and emulsifiers: A review of the mechanistic explorations.

The stability of food emulsions is the basis for other properties. During their production and processing, emulsions tend to become unstable due to their thermodynamic instability, and it is usually necessary to add emulsifiers and proteins to stabilize emulsions. It becomes crucial to study the intrinsic mechanisms of emulsifiers and proteins and their joint stabilization of food emulsions. This paper summarizes the research on intrinsic mechanisms of food emulsions stabilized by emulsifiers and proteins in recent years. The destabilization and stabilization of emulsions are related to the ad

Applications of Saponin Extract from Asparagus Roots as Functional Ingredient.

When replanting an asparagus field, the roots of the previous crop are crushed and incorporated into the soil, creating problems of autotoxicity and fungal infections. Asparagus roots can be considered as a valuable byproduct, since they are very rich in saponins (3-6%), compounds currently considered as bio-emulsifiers. The objective is to evaluate the emulsifying and foaming capacity of a saponin extract from asparagus roots (ARS) and compare it with other commercial extracts. ARS was obtained using a process patented by our research group. The results have shown that ARS has activity simila

Molecular mechanisms affecting the stability of high internal phase emulsions of zein-soy isoflavone complexes fabricated with ultrasound-assisted dynamic high-pressure microfluidization.

In this study, zein-soy isoflavone complex (ZSI) emulsifiers were fabricated using ultrasound-assisted dynamic high-pressure micro fluidization to stabilise highinternal phase pickering emulsions. Ultrasound-assisted dynamic high-pressure micro-fluidization enhanced surface hydrophobicity, zeta potential, and soy isoflavone binding capacity, while it decreased particle size, especially during ultrasound and subsequent microfluidization. The treated ZSI could produce small droplet clusters and gel-like structures, with excellent viscoelasticity, thixotropy and creaming stability owing to their

Synergistic effect of microfluidization and transglutaminase cross-linking on the structural and oil-water interface functional properties of whey protein concentrate for improving the thermal stability of nanoemulsions.

Generally, whey protein concentrate (WPC) undergoes high-temperature denaturation and aggregation, which reduces its emulsifying properties and is not conducive to as an emulsifier to maintain the thermal stability of emulsions. In this study, dynamic high-pressure microfluidization technology (DHPM) combined with TGase (TG) cross-linking was applied to prepare DHPM-TG-WPC, and the thermal stabilization mechanism of nanoemulsions prepared with DHPM-TG-WPC was explored. Results showed DHPM treatment could promote the formation of TG-crosslinked WPC polymers. Compared to WPC, the free sulfhydryl

Fungi from petroleum waste landfill as potential bioemulsifier producers.

Modern industry, reliant on petroleum-derived synthetic emulsifiers, faces an urgent need for more sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions. In this context, bioemulsifiers emerge as a powerful alternative, demonstrating superior emulsifying and stabilizing properties that can lead to cleaner and safer industrial processes. This study investigated the bioemulsifier production of eighteen filamentous fungal isolates, including strains of Aspergillus, Paecilomyces, and Trichoderma, sourced from a petroleum waste landfill. All isolates effectively emulsified motor oil (E24 > 90%) and pr

Preparation, characterization and in vitro digestive behaviors of emulsions synergistically stabilized by γ-cyclodextrin/sodium caseinate/alginate.

Developing natural, safe, and biocompatible emulsion stabilizers for highly stable emulsions remains a difficult challenge. In this study, stable nano-scale emulsions were prepared using γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD), sodium caseinate (SC), and alginate (Alg) as emulsifiers. The synergistic stabilization of γ-CD/SC/Alg enabled the emulsions to remain stable even under high-acidic (pH 3.0), high-alkaline (pH 11.0) and high temperature (90 °C) conditions. The improved stability at acidic conditions was attributed to the positive impact of Alg. Additionally, the rheological measurements showed that the e

Contact sensitivity to nonoxynols as a cause of intolerance to antiseptic preparations.

Twelve cases of allergic contact dermatitis caused by antiseptic preparations are presented. The reactions resulted not from the active principles but rather from nonoxynols used in the offending substances as nonionic surface-active agents. Nonoxynols are ethoxylated alkyl phenols or nonylphenylethers that conform in general to the formula C9H19C6H4(OCH2CH2)nOH. They have emulsifying, wetting, foaming, and solubilizing properties and are used in a large number of industrial, household, agricultural, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical products. They also are used as spermicides. There are very few r

Preparation and Optimization of O/W Emulsions Stabilized by Triglycerol Monolaurate for Curcumin Encapsulation.

Curcumin is one of the most studied chemo-preventive agents, which may cause suppression, retardation, or inversion of carcinogenesis. But its application is currently limited because of its poor water-solubility and bioaccessibility. A curcumin O/W emulsion was prepared by high-pressure homogenization, using triglyceride monolaurate as an emulsifier and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) as the oil phase. The effects of emulsifiers, emulsifier concentration, oil type, oil-to-water ratio, and homogenization pressure and processing cycles on the physical stability and droplet size distribution of

Overcoming Solubility Challenges: Self-emulsifying Systems for Enhancing the Delivery of Poorly Water-Soluble Antiviral Drugs.

The primary goal of drug formulation is to improve a drug's bioavailability in the body. However, poorly water-soluble drugs present challenging issues related to their solubility and bioavailability factors. Emerging technologies, such as lipid-based drug delivery systems, including micro- or nanoemulsifying drug delivery systems, have become increasingly relevant to address the above challenges. This review presents a thorough overview of self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS). It covers the properties, principles, self-emulsification mechanism, formulation strategies, and characteri

Influence of HLB Value of Emulsifier on the Properties of Microcapsules and Self-Healing Properties of Waterborne Coatings.

In this paper, self-healing microcapsules were prepared by using melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin as the wall material and shellac as the core material repairing agent. In order to explore the effect of the four factors (i.e., the HLB value of emulsifier, the type of solvent, the mass ratio of shellac to rosin, and the rate of rotating) on the comprehensive performance of microcapsules, and orthogonal experiments with four factors and three levels were carried out. The results showed that the hydrophilic lipophilic balance (HLB) value of the emulsifier was the most important influencing factor

Thorough characterization of a Self-Emulsifying Drug Delivery System with Raman hyperspectral imaging: a case study.

Newly developed drugs often have poor bioavailability due to their poor water solubility (BCS class 2 drugs). It is therefore necessary to develop new strategies to enhance their solubility and their activity, among which, Self-Emulsifying Drug Delivery System (SEDDS). The efficacy of the drugs contained in these preparations is mainly affected by the solid state and the particle size of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). However, it is quite complex, long and expensive to characterize these parameters with classical techniques such as X-ray powder diffraction, differential scanning c

Citrus peel pectin and alginate-based emulgel particles for small intestine-targeted oral delivery of curcumin.

Polysaccharides are a prominent choice in the realm of food-grade oral delivery systems due to their resistance to degradation by digestive enzymes in the oral, gastric, and small intestinal environments, as well as their ease of production, cost-effectiveness, and potential health benefits as prebiotics. Furthermore, their ability to respond to pH-induced dissolution, along with their emulsifying properties, can be strategically employed to achieve precise targeting of lipophilic bioactives to the small intestine. In this study, citrus peel pectin and alginate served as stabilizers for emulge

Characterization of decolorized Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein foaming solution and its application in foam coffee.

Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein (CPP) possesses superior emulsification and foaming capabilities, enabling its solution to replace milk as a foaming agent in coffee products. However, its application, is constrained by the obvious pigmentation and suboptimal foam stability. To achieve this goal, ethanol decolorization and saponin (Tea saponin (Ts), Gypenoside (Gyp)) complexation were employed to prepare decolorized Chlorella pyrenoidosa protein (DCPP) foaming solution. The interfacial properties, rheological properties, and foam properties were characterized. Initially, compared with the CPP sol

Amended safety assessment of Sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil, hydrogenated sesame seed oil, Sesamum indicum (sesame) oil unsaponifiables, and sodium sesameseedate.

Sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil and related cosmetic ingredients are derived from Sesamum indicum. Sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil, sesamum indicum (sesame) oil unsaponifiables, and hydrogenated sesame seed oil function as conditioning agents. Sodium sesameseedate functions as a cleansing agent, emulsifying agent, and a nonaqueous viscosity increasing agent. These ingredients are neither skin irritants, sensitizers, teratogens, nor carcinogens at exposures that would result from cosmetic use. Both animal and human data relevant to the cosmetic use of these ingredients were reviewed. The CI
