Intra-uterine tachycardia associated with multicystic encephalomalacia (MCE).

Multiple cystic brain lesions in neonates have been described as a result of a variety of causes. All events described thus far in association with multicystic encephalomalacia (MCE) seem to point to hypoxic-ischaemic injury as the common factor for this particular form of central nervous system damage. We describe a neonate in whom repeated, prolonged episodes of intrauterine tachycardia had been documented. Congestive heart failure and fetal hydrops were present at birth and MCE at the age of 13 wk. The obvious relationship between this child's intrauterine tachycardia and his MCE points to

Abnormal parietal encephalomalacia associated with schizophrenia: A case report.

RATIONALE: It is widely believed that structural abnormalities of the brain contribute to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. The parietal lobe is a central hub of multisensory integration, and abnormities in this region might account for the clinical features of schizophrenia. However, few cases of parietal encephalomalacia associated with schizophrenia have been described. PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: In this paper, we present a case of a 25-year-old schizophrenia patient with abnormal parietal encephalomalacia. The patient had poor nutrition and frequently had upper respiratory infect

[Protective effect of alpha-linolenic acid in encephalomalacia in chickens].

Encephalomacia is a vitamin E deficiency syndrome which affects the cerebellum of young chicks. The lesion includes degenerative alterations of cellular and fibrillar elements, apparently as the result of the ischaemia caused by thrombotic events in the microvascular system. A supply of linoleic acid, as fatty acid methyl esters prepared from safflower oil (Carthamus tinctorius), caused a high incidence of encephalomalacia. On the other hand, linseed oil esters, rich in alpha-linolenic acid, did not induce any symptoms and protected the chicks to a large extend against the development of signs

Multicystic Encephalomalacia in Early Infancy: A Neuroimaging Case Report.

Multicystic encephalomalacia (MCE) is an uncommon but severe consequence of perinatal hypoxic-ischemic injury in neonates. We report a 1.5-month-old male infant presenting with fever and focal seizures, with a prior history of birth asphyxia and prolonged neonatal intensive care unit stay. Neurosonography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed extensive bilateral cortical and subcortical cystic changes with cerebral atrophy consistent with MCE. This case highlights the importance of early neuroimaging to identify characteristic patterns of extensive cystic degeneration, enabling timely progno

Cytomegalovirus meningoencephalitis in an immunocompetent host with evolution of cystic encephalomalacia.

A previously healthy 2-month-old male presented with fever and seizures. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies, head computed tomography (CT), and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies were unremarkable on admission. After a clinical decline on the second day admission due to cerebral edema a repeat head CT showed loss of gray-white matter differentiation indicative of global anoxic injury. A repeat brain MRI on day 5 revealed diffuse restricted diffusion globally, acute infarction of the right posterior inferior cerebellar artery territory, and left frontoparietal leptomeningitis versus

Encephalomalacia in the frontal lobe: complication of the endoscopic sinus surgery.

Encephalomalacia is the softening or loss of brain tissue after cerebral infarction, cerebral ischemia, infection, craniocerebral trauma, or other injury. The term is usually used during gross pathologic inspection to describe blurred cortical margins and decreased consistency of brain tissue after infarction. Multicystic encephalomalacia refers to the formation of multiple cystic cavities of various sizes in the cerebral cortex of neonates and infants after injury, most notably perinatal hypoxic-ischemic events. Chronic sinusitis has become one of the most common diseases in otolaryngology pr

Prenatal multicystic encephalomalacia due to anomaly of the aortic arch.

Multicystic encephalomalacia (ME) usually results from severe hypoxic-ischemic brain damage occurring during the late third trimester of gestation and birth. We report on a case of congenital ME due to a congenital anomaly of the aortic origin of brachiocephalic vessels resulting in subclavian steal syndrome. A 5-day-old term neonate presented with microcephaly and overlapping cranial sutures. Both arms were developed normally. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed extensive bilateral supratentorial ME. Color duplex sonography of the aortic arch and the intracranial and extracranial v

Multicystic encephalomalacia of infancy: clinico-pathological report of 7 cases.

Clinical follow up and complete neuropathological examination was made on seven cases of multicystic encephalomalacia of infancy. Etiological factors were carefully studied in all the cases. They consisted of prenatal injuries presenting as a cord prolapse, in 3 cases; prolonged labour with marked cyanosis; abdominal trauma during gestation, and various maternal infections at different stages of pregnancy. Pathological interest is centred on the variable involvement of different areas of the brain, generally sparing the cerebellum and brain stem, and being minimal or absent in the occipito-tem

Huge chronic subdural haematoma formation in an encephalomalacia stroke cavity.

A patient suffering from a cerebrovascular ischaemic stroke may present similar symptoms to a patient with a chronic subdural haematoma (CSDH). Head CT imaging of an old extensive hemispheric infarction may appear hypodense in a similar fashion as CSDH. We described a 46-year-old man with a 2-week history of mild headache and worsening right lower extremity hemiparesis. Eight years prior, he suffered a left middle cerebral artery territory infarct. The head CT scan showed a huge, slightly hypodense area on the left brain, causing a significant mass effect. A new stroke was of concern versus a

Multicystic encephalomalacia in liveborn twin with a stillborn macerated co-twin.

Computed tomography showed multiple cystic lesions in the brains of three infants with cerebral palsy. Each patient was the product of a twin pregnancy with a stillborn, macerated co-twin. In two patients angiography was performed and suggested that the cystic lesions were multicystic encephalomalacia due to perinatal arterial occlusion.

Neonatal polycystic encephalomalacia: four new cases and review of the literature.

Four patients with pathologically documented polycystic cavitation of the brain had an acute illness characterised by stupor, seizures, CSF erythrocytic and monocytic pleocytosis, increased CSF protein, and diminished CSF glucose. The acute phase was followed by chronic decerebation, disappearance of the CSF abnormalities, and radiological evidence of polycystic cavitation of the brain. In one patient Herpes simplex was isolated from a cutaneous vesicle. The CSF abnormalities in the disorder have received scant attention, and have not previously been correlated with the acute and chronic stage

Cerebellar encephalomalacia on magnetic resonance imaging after removal of acoustic tumor.

MRI is widely used for postoperative surveillance of patients undergoing surgery for removal of acoustic neuroma. The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency and pattern of postoperative changes in the cerebellum and brain stem on MRI after removal of acoustic neuroma. A retrospective study was conducted in 30 consecutive patients who underwent postoperative MRI between 1994 and 1995. The timing of the scans after surgery ranged from 12 months to 10 years. T2 -weighted turbo spin-echo images revealed cerebellar encephalomalacia in 17 of 30 cases. Cerebellar encephalomalacia was

Selective Symmetrical Encephalomalacia in a Maine Coon Crossbred Kitten in Italy.

Selective symmetrical encephalomalacia (SSE) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by bilateral and symmetrical areas of malacia within specific regions of the central nervous system and has been reported in humans and several animal species. This report describes a case of SSE in a six-month-old Maine Coon crossbred kitten from Italy that presented with central vestibular dysfunction, rapidly progressive neurological deterioration, proprioceptive deficits, respiratory impairment, seizures, and abnormal vocalization. Clinical evaluation, hematological and biochemical analyses, and anci

Immunohistological study of encephalomalacia in pigs infected with Aujeszky's disease virus.

Seven hysterectomy-derived colostrum-deprived pigs aged 4 weeks were inoculated intranasally with 10(3) plaque-forming units (1 ml) of the Yamagata YS-81 strain of Aujeszky's disease virus. One pig died and five developed encephalomyelitis and trigeminal ganglionitis. Three pigs killed on days 12-16 showed prominent malacic degeneration. Associated with the malacic foci were many lysosome-positive cells. IgG- and IgM-containing cells in the perivascular cuffs and glial nodules were first detected on day 7, after which they increased in number. They were thought to be closely associated with th

Bilateral cystic encephalomalacia following multiple intrauterine transfusions for anti-Kell isoimmunisation.

Fetal and neonatal haemolytic diseases result from maternal allo-immunisation to fetal antigens. Maternal antibodies cross the placenta causing red cell haemolysis, resulting in fetal anaemia and, in severe cases, hydrops and perinatal death. Intravascular intrauterine blood transfusion (IUT) has markedly reduced perinatal mortality and is now a standard procedure. IUT is considered to be a safe procedure with fetal loss rate reported to be less than 5% and no reported increase in the rate of neurodevelopment impairment. In this report, we are presenting a case of bilateral cystic encephalomal

[Multicystic encephalomalacia in a surviving twin after death of the other twin in utero].

A case of multicystic encephalomalacia in a twin is reported. The other twin died in utero at 32 weeks gestational age. Because there was no evidence of fetal distress the pregnancy was allowed to continue until 36 weeks gestational age. Injuries to the surviving twin due to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIVC) and vascular thrombosis or to anoxia and ischemia may occur when there are anastomoses between the circulatory systems of the two twins, i.e., in monochorionic pregnancies. The classically recommended strategy is to wait for adequate maturity of the surviving fetus (36 weeks).
