Risk of exposure to eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus increases with the density of northern cardinals.

For a variety of infectious diseases, the richness of the community of potential host species has emerged as an important factor in pathogen transmission, whereby a higher richness of host species is associated with a lowered disease risk. The proposed mechanism driving this pattern is an increased likelihood in species-rich communities that infectious individuals will encounter dead-end hosts. Mosquito-borne pathogen systems potentially are exceptions to such "dilution effects" because mosquitoes vary their rates of use of vertebrate host species as bloodmeal sources relative to host availabi

Test of recrudescence hypothesis for overwintering of eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus in gray catbirds.

Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV; family Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus) epizootics are infrequent, but they can lead to high mortality in infected horses and humans. Despite the importance of EEEV to human and animal health, little is known about how the virus overwinters and reinitiates transmission each spring, particularly in temperate regions where infected adult mosquitoes are unlikely to survive through the winter. One hypothesis to explain the mechanism by which this virus persists from year to year is the spring recrudescence of latent virus in avian reservoir hosts. In this stu

[Damaging action of Venezuelan equine and Eastern equine encephalomyelitis viruses on the chromosome apparatus of mouse bone marrow cells].

Cytogenetical study of bone marrow cells of mice infected with pathogenic and attenuated strains of Venezuelan (VEE) and Eastern (EEE) equine encephalomyelitis viruses was carried out to elucidate the pattern of changes of the chromosomal apparatus in the infected animals, and differences in the effect of strains with different degree of pathogenicity on the cell during mitosis. It was shown that inoculation of mice with pathogenic and attenuated VEE and EEE virus strains led to the appearance in the bone marrow of a larger number of aberrant cells. Both VEE virus strain induced a significant

Enzyme immunoassay for detection of antibodies against eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus in sentinel chickens.

We developed an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the detection of immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG subclass antibodies directed against eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) virus in chickens. The assays were compared with the serum plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) and the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test for ability to detect antibodies against EEE virus in laboratory-infected birds. No cross-reactivity was detected in serum from chickens inoculated with St. Louis encephalitis or Highlands J virus. The interval after infection when EEE virus-specific antibodies were first detected

A microprecipitation test for rapid detection and identification of Venezuelan, eastern and western equine encephalomyelitis viruses.

The development of a new diagnostic procedure for the identification of Venezvelan, eastern and western equine encephalomyelitis (VEE, EEE, WEE) viruses is described. The procedure utilizes virus precipitation with reference fluorescein-conjugated gamma globulin, followed by cellulose acetate electrophoresis. Clinical specimens containing varying concentrations of virus yielded, in primary duck embryo cell culture, sufficient virus for detection within 22 to 44 hours. Identification of VEE, EEE and WEE virus in specimens was accomplished by microprecipitation within this time. In contrast to c

Glycoproteins E2 of the Venezuelan and eastern equine encephalomyelitis viruses contain multiple cross-reactive epitopes.

Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) with sixty types of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) was used to study cross-reactive epitopes on the attenuated and virulent strains of the Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) viruses. All three structural proteins of the EEE and VEE viruses were demonstrated to have both cross-reactive and specific antigenic determinants. The glycoprotein E1 of EEE and VEE viruses possesses three cross-reactive epitopes for binding to MAbs. The glycoprotein E2 has a cluster of epitopes for 20 cross-reacting MAbs produced to EEE and VEE vir

Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis in Michigan: Historical Review of Equine, Human, and Wildlife Involvement, Epidemiology, Vector Associations, and Factors Contributing to Endemicity.

Eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) is a mosquito-borne viral disease that is an emerging public health concern in the state of Michigan. Although Michigan has one of the highest incidence rates of EEE in the United States, much of the information known about cases in humans, equines, and other animals residing in Michigan is unpublished. This article summarizes such information and explores spatial trends in the historic distribution of EEE in Michigan. Outbreaks in Michigan have occurred over an 80-yr interval, involving only horses in 1942-1943 and 1973-1976, and then episodically from 1

Winter biology of wetland mosquitoes at a focus of eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus transmission in Alabama, USA.

At temperate latitudes, vectors and pathogens must possess biological mechanisms for coping with cold temperatures and surviving from one transmission season to the next. Mosquitoes that overwinter in the adult stage have been proposed as winter maintenance hosts for certain arboviruses. In the cases of West Nile virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus) and St. Louis encephalitis virus (family Flaviviridae, genus Flavivirus), discovery of infected overwintering females lends support to this hypothesis, but for other arboviruses, in particular Eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (family

Use of hamster-baited no. 17 Trinidad mosquito traps at an eastern equine encephalomyelitis focus in Tennessee.

We set out no. 17 Trinidad traps baited with hamsters at a swamp in Tennessee, where recent eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) equine outbreaks had occurred, to determine which mosquito species at this site were attracted to these traps. We also set out CO2-baited CDC light traps for comparison. Of 11 species present in CO2-baited CDC light traps, only Culex (Melanoconion) erraticus (Dyar and Knab) blood fed on hamsters in the Trinidad traps. Significantly less Cx. erraticus mosquitoes entered Trinidad traps per trap night (mean = 17.6, median = 6.0) compared with CDC traps (mean = 38.7, m

Preparation and testing of vaccines prepared from the envelopes of Venezuelan, eastern, and western equine encephalomyelitis viruses.

Envelope components were separated from Venezuelan, Eastern, and Western equine encephalomyelitis viruses after treatment of the virions with detergent. Vaccines prepared from the envelope component were capable of stimulating mice to produce humoral antibodies. Protective efficacy studies were performed using mono-, di-, and trivalent vaccine combinations. These elicited varying degrees of homologous protection, and Eastern and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis envelope products appeared to confer protection to mice challenged with Western equine encephalomyelitis virus.

Detection of eastern equine encephalomyelitis viral antigen in avian blood by enzyme immunoassay: a laboratory study.

An enzyme immunoassay (EIA) was evaluated for its efficacy at detecting eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) virus in avian blood and brain specimens. Preliminary analysis of blood from experimentally infected house sparrows and naturally infected whooping cranes showed that EEE antigen could be detected with the EIA. Polyclonal mouse antibodies were selected for antigen capture, and rabbit antibodies were selected for antigen detection. Overnight antigen incubation increased sensitivity. The lower limit of EEE antigen detection was 10(3.5) TCID50/ml for a stock of virus. Sensitivity was 10%

A field study of persistence of antibodies in California horses vaccinated against western, eastern, and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis.

As a result of the continuing threat of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE), a study was made to determine if revaccination against VEE (TC-83 vaccine) was feasible and if revaccination could be incorporated into other routine vaccination practices. Of the horses given annual vaccination with bivalent western equine encephalomyelitis (WEE) and eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) vaccine, 57% retained detectable serum-neutralizing (SN) antiboyd titers for VEE 18 months after the initial VEE vaccination was given. Of horses with no record of WEE-EEE vacinnation, 100% retained detectable

Virus-dependent mortality in Rift Valley fever, eastern equine encephalomyelitis, and chikungunya virus-inoculated mosquito (Diptera: Culicidae) larvae.

The effect of inoculation of mosquito larvae with Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus on survival to the adult stage was evaluated in Aedes aegypti (L.), Ae. fowleri (Charmoy), Ae. mcintoshi Huang, Ae. taeniorhynchus (Wiedemann), Ae. triseriatus (Say), Eretmapodites quinquevittatus Theobald, Anopheles albimanus Wiedemann, and Culex pipiens L. Pupation rates were similar for RVF virus-inoculated and diluent-inoculated larvae of all mosquito species tested except Cx. pipiens. However, with the exception of An. albimanus and Ae. triseriatus, virtually all pupae derived from RVF virus-inoculated larvae

Identification of reptilian and amphibian blood meals from mosquitoes in an eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus focus in central Alabama.

Uranotaenia sapphirina, Culex erraticus, and Cx. peccator were collected in an enzootic eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) virus focus in central Alabama (Tuskegee National Forest) from 2001 to 2003 and analyzed for virus as well as host selection. EEE virus was detected in each species every year except 2003, when pools of Cx. peccator were negative. Most (97%) of the 130 Cx. peccator blood meals identified were from ectothermic hosts; 3% were from birds. Among blood meals from reptiles (approximately 75% of the total), 81% were from Agkistrodon piscivorus (cottonmouth); all amphibian blo
