Micrococcus species are typically considered contaminants from skin and mucous membranes. However, especially in severely immunocompromised patients, a blood culture with Micrococcus could be the cause of a significant infection. We report a 65-year-old female with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who developed native valve infective endocarditis due to Micrococcus luteus. There is no defined therapeutic regimen for infective endocarditis due to Micrococcus luteus; however, our patient was successfully treated for six weeks with vancomycin and rifampin. To our knowledge, there is only one other case rep

A case of infective endocarditis (IE) in a 5 1/2-year-old boy in whom blood and bone marrow cultures yielded an unusual organism, a non-toxigenic strain of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, is reported. This proved fatal, and at autopsy congenital valvar aortic stenosis was found, but the vegetations occurred on an anatomically normal mitral valve. Organisms such as C. diphtheriae should not be ignored when isolated from blood cultures in suspected cases of IE.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is a widely established treatment for severe aortic stenosis. Infective endocarditis (IE) following TAVR is an uncommon but significant complication occurring in 1% of patients.
CASE SUMMARY: A 70-year-old man with a prior TAVR presenting with chest discomfort and elevated troponins was diagnosed with non-ST-segment elevation-acute coronary syndrome. Coronary angiography demonstrated an occluded LAD; aspiration thrombectomy yielded material consistent with vegetation. Blood cultures resulted with Enterococcus faecalis. Transesophageal

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Perivalvular abscess is a serious complication in infective endocarditis (IE) that confers a poor prognosis. Few data are available concerning the long-term outcome of these patients. The study aim was to determine clinical features and long-term prognosis of non-drug addict patients with IE complicated by perivalvular abscess.
METHODS: Among a consecutive series of 241 patients with IE, 30 (12.4%) were diagnosed with perivalvular abscess and treated at the authors' institution over a 15-year period. A comparative analysis of patients with perivalvular abscess

BACKGROUND: Infective endocarditis (IE) has increased in rural states such as West Virginia (WV) with high injection drug use. IE is medically managed with antimicrobial treatment alone or combined with surgical treatment. This study aimed to characterize the predictors associated with surgical treatment and rates of inpatient mortality and readmission among IE patients in WV's rural centers.
METHODS: This retrospective review of electronic health records includes all adults hospitalized for IE at major rural tertiary cardiovascular centers in WV during 2014-2018. Descriptive statistics were

BACKGROUND Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infectious disease that occurs in valves, centered on the endocardium and ventricular septal defects. It is a serious disease that is easily misdiagnosed and has a high mortality rate if left untreated. Edwardsiella tarda is an extremely rare cause of IE, especially in young and non-immunocompromised hosts. CASE REPORT A woman in her 20s presented to our hospital with fever of unknown cause and liver dysfunction. She was admitted to the Department of Gastroenterological Medicine owing to suspicion of gastrointestinal infection. Gastrointestinal exam

Hemodialysis (HD) patients are more susceptible to infective endocarditis (IE) due to the increased risk of bacterial invasion through intravascular access. However, it remains unclear whether the causative organisms and outcomes of IE in HD patients differ from those in non-HD patients. This study clarified the differences in clinical presentation and outcomes between HD and non-HD patients. At our hospital, we performed a retrospective study of 39 HD and 51 non-HD patients with echocardiography-confirmed IE between June 2000 and February 2007. No differences in sex, intravenous drug use, pre

RATIONALE: Infective endocarditis (i.e.) results from the combined effects of multiple factors, such as frequent vascular access procedures and impaired immune system function, and is relatively common among patients with uremia undergoing long-term hemodialysis. Myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) may present as an atypical clinical presentation, especially in patients with multiple comorbidities.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a rare case of a 52-year-old male who underwent regular hemodialysis using a tunneled-cuffed catheter and presented with persistent acut

Background. Non-tuberculous mycobacterial infective endocarditis (NTM-IE) is an uncommon but increasingly recognized aetiology of culture-negative endocarditis, particularly in the context of healthcare exposure. Rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) species present significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their indolent nature and clinical similarity to tuberculosis. Case summary. We describe a case series of three patients with native valve infective endocarditis caused by rapidly growing NTM following recent percutaneous coronary intervention. All patients initi

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines on the management of infective endocarditis (IE) recommend follow-up blood cultures (FUBCs) to identify persistent bacteraemia, as this has prognostic value and guides treatment decisions. While persistent bacteraemia frequently occurs in Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia and IE, its prevalence and impact in non-staphylococcal IE is largely unknown. We determined prevalence and prognostic value of persistent bacteraemia in non-staphylococcal IE.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all patients diagnosed with definite non-staphylococcal endocarditis

Limited research has been conducted on healthcare-associated infective endocarditis (HAIE), although it is of increasing importance. The aim of this study is to compare the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and prognosis of community-acquired IE (CA-IE) with HAIE and non-nosocomial healthcare-associated IE (NNHCA-IE). A retrospective, consecutive case-series analysis was organized and performed during the 20-year study period in Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, China. A total of 154 patients were enrolled, including 126 (81.8%) who had CA-IE and 28 (18.2%) who had HAIE, among whom 20 (71.4%)

Background and Objectives: Infective endocarditis (IE) remains a severe infection with high morbidity and mortality, particularly among people who inject drugs (PWID). Data from Eastern Europe are limited, despite the increasing burden of intravenous drug use in the region. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational cohort study of 153 patients diagnosed with IE and admitted to the "Dr. Victor Babeș" Clinical Hospital for Infectious and Tropical Diseases in Bucharest, Romania, between August 2019 and July 2024. Patients were classified into PWID (n = 51) and non-PWID (n

This study developed a novel core-shell nano-system aimed at addressing the clinical challenges posed by infective endocarditis (IE). The system combines ZIF-8 nanozymes and a polydopamine (PDA) coating, exhibiting excellent biocompatibility, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. In vitro experiments demonstrated that the system effectively inhibited the growth of S. aureus and significantly reduced inflammation and oxidative stress induced by bacterial infection. A mouse model of IE was constructed, and the therapeutic effects of the core-shell nano-system in vivo we

We report a patient's journey with a four-year history of hypertension (HTN) and hyperlipidemia (HLD), stable on beta-blocker and statin, monitored every six months by alternating visits between her cardiologist and primary care physician (PCP) in North Carolina (NC). Six months before relocating to New York (NY) she had been informed about incidental severe hyponatremia during her last outpatient visit, the need for repletion with sodium chloride tablets, and the critical importance of prompt follow-up to rule out malignancy by starting with a chest X-ray. She opted not to follow instructions
