Preeclampsia (PE) is characterized by new onset hypertension and proteinuria. Undoubtedly, some individuals do not fit precisely into this description, and it could be challenging to spot newly developed PE in females who already have hypertension or renal illness. Monitoring the disease's progression enables the optimization of delivery time while minimizing premature births. The current study explores the diagnostic benefits of serum endostatin and cystatin C in addition to serum and urinary magnesium (Mg) and fractional excretion magnesium (FEMg) for early prediction of PE. The population s

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common comorbidity of cardiopulmonary disease. Endostatin, an inhibitor of angiogenesis, is elevated in neonates with lung disease. ST2 is a heart failure biomarker correlated with PH in adults. We hypothesized that these biomarkers may be useful in diagnosing PH and categorizing its severity in infants.
METHODS: Endostatin, ST2, and NT-proBNP plasma concentrations from 26 infants with PH and 21 control infants without PH were correlated with echocardiographic and clinical features using regression models over time.
RESULTS: Endostatin, ST2, and

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis is the process of neovascularization from pre-existing vasculature and is involved in various physiological and pathological processes. Inhibitors of angiogenesis, administered either as individual drugs or in combination with other chemotherapy, have been shown to benefit patients with various cancers. Endostatin, a 20-kDa C-terminal fragment of type XVIII collagen, is one of the most potent inhibitors of angiogenesis.
SCOPE OF REVIEW: We discuss the biology behind endostatin in the context of its endogenous production, the various receptors to which it binds, and th

INTRODUCTION: People are constantly exposed to formaldehyde, a volatile and poisonous gas, in indoor environments. In particular, anatomists, pathologists, histologists, and those involved in embalming are exposed to higher amounts of formaldehyde continuously due to their work. This study aimed to investigate the effect of N-acetylcysteine on endostatin and humanin values in male rats exposed to experimental formaldehyde.
METHODS: In the study, 28 male Spraque-Dawley rats aged 12-14 weeks (seven animals in each group: control group, formaldehyde group, N-acetylcysteine group, formaldehyde+N-

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a condition initiated by the assimilation of β-amyloid plaques (Aβ) and tau tangles, leading to neurodegeneration. It involves frequently cognitive decline as well as memory impairment in patients. Efforts in therapeutic interventions are currently facing challenges in identifying targets within this scaffold that can significantly alter the clinical course for individuals with AD. Moreover, in AD, neurons release a protein called endostatin, which accumulates in Aβ plaques and enhances AD. This accumulation of Aβ in the triggers a cascade of events leading to synap

Endostatin is a potent anti-angiogenic and anti-tumor protein capable of regressing tumors without inducing acquired resistance. Since it is a fragment of the parental molecule, collagen XVIII, its endogenous production depends on the activity of a specific proteolytic enzyme. While such an enzyme has been described in mice, a human counterpart has not been identified so far. Here, we searched for this enzyme by using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer peptide containing the cleavage site of human collagen XVIII. We found that the cleavage activity was present in various murine and human

OBJECTIVE: Endostatin is an anti-angiogenic agent that blocks matrix-metalloproteinase-2 and inhibits endothelial cell proliferation. Currently, endostatin is available through recombinant technology, which limits its broader use. In this study, a synthetic endostatin fragment (EF) was analyzed to determine its anti-angiogenic properties when locally delivered by controlled-release polymers and to establish its effect as a treatment for experimental gliomas.
METHODS: Cytotoxicity of EF against 9L gliosarcoma and F98 glioma was determined in vitro. EF was loaded into polyanhydride-poly-(bis-[c

We have shown previously that the oligomeric endostatin domain of collagen XVIII (NC1) functioned as a motility-inducing factor regulating the extracellular matrix-dependent morphogenesis of endothelial cells. This motogenic activity gave rise to structures resembling filipodia and lamellipodia and was dependent on Rac, Cdc42, and mitogen-activated protein kinase. Here, we demonstrate that these properties of endostatin are primarily mediated by laminin in the basement membrane and heparan sulfates on the cell surface. The sites of interaction between laminin and oligomeric endostain include t

BACKGROUND: Endostatin is a 20-kDa C-terminal fragment of collagen XVIII, known for its ability to inhibit the proliferation of capillary endothelial cells. Previous studies suggested that circulating endostatin independently predicts incident chronic kidney disease. However, the impact of endostatin on graft loss level in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) remains unknown.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational cohort study in 574 maintenance KTRs. Patients were followed for kidney graft loss and all-cause mortality during a median follow-up of 48 months. Serum-, and urine-sample

Pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) are a common source of morbidity after bidirectional superior cavopulmonary anastomosis (Glenn). The diversion of hepatic venous effluent away from the pulmonary circulation after Glenn appears to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of PAVMs. Although the liver is known to produce factors that regulate vascular development, specific hepatic inhibitors of angiogenesis have not been described in the post-Glenn population. Endostatin, produced from its precursor collagen XVIII, is a potent inhibitor of angiogenesis produced by the liver. This

Neovascularization in the retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) mouse eye is a self-limiting phenomenon. Free endostatin is known to be anti-angiogenic. In this study, we identified the localization of endostatin-like protein (ELP) sequences and investigated their possible role in this process. ROP was induced in C57Bl/6 mice and the eyes observed 1-11 days after termination of high oxygen supply (P13-P21). Sagittal sections and retinal flatmounts were double-stained with antibodies against a protein-sequence of endostatin, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), lectin, and smooth-muscle alpha

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is an incurable disease characterized by disordered and dysfunctional angiogenesis leading to small-vessel loss and an obliterative vasculopathy. The pathogenesis of PAH is not fully understood, but multiple studies have demonstrated links between elevated angiostatic factors, disease severity, and adverse clinical outcomes. ES (endostatin), one such circulating angiostatic peptide, is the cleavage product of the proteoglycan COL18A1 (collagen α1[XVIII] chain). Elevated serum ES is associated with increased mortality and disease severity in PAH. A nonsynon
