Energy drinks, race, and problem behaviors among college students.

PURPOSE: This study examined relationships between energy drink consumption and problem behaviors among adolescents and emerging adults. It was hypothesized that frequent consumption of energy drinks would be positively associated with substance abuse and other risky behaviors, and that these relationships would be moderated by race. METHODS: Cross-sectional, self-report survey data were collected from 602 Western New York undergraduate students in the spring of 2006. Differences in problem behaviors by frequency of energy drink consumption were assessed with multivariate linear and logistic

Dystonic crises in dopa-responsive dystonia induced by energy drinks.

We present an interesting case of recurrent dystonic crises in dopa-responsive dystonia (DRD) likely induced by excessive consumption of aspartame-containing products, in particular sugar-free energy drinks. This has a strong practical value as acute presentations to the emergency department can be avoided in these susceptible individuals. Usual medical and dietary advice in the treatment of DRD would include the avoidance of high-dose phenylalanine-containing products, and to this we would advocate the avoidance of high-dose aspartame-containing products.

Energy Drinks and Myocardial Ischemia: A Review of Case Reports.

The use and abuse of energy drinks (EDs) is constantly increasing worldwide. We performed a systematic search in Medline, Scopus and Web of Science to identify evidence about the potential link between these beverages and myocardial ischemia. Overall, 8 case reports could be detected, all of which described a realistic association between large intake of EDs and episodes of myocardial ischemia. Interestingly, no additional triggers of myocardial ischemia other than energy drinks could be identified in the vast majority of cases. Some plausible explanations can be brought in support of this ass

Energy drink and energy shot use in the military.

Use of energy drinks and energy shots among military personnel is controversial. High amounts of caffeine (the primary active ingredient in these products) may impact performance of military duties. The impact of caffeine overconsumption and potential subsequent side effects that might be experienced by service members with unique roles and responsibilities is a concern. Reported here are the prevalence of use, reasons for use, and side effects associated with consumption of energy drinks and energy shots among several populations of active duty personnel in the US military. A snowball survey

Psychotic symptoms following consumption of energy drinks: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Energy drinks (EDs) is an umbrella term for a family of beverages which contain high dosages of caffeine. ED consumption is increasing worldwide, and it is possible that excess ED consumption can cause or worsen symptoms of severe mental disorders (SMD) such as schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder. METHODS: We searched three electronic databases for studies on patients with SMD who had experienced psychotic symptoms following the consumption of energy drinks, as well as patients who developed psychotic symptoms after ED consumption without any prior severe psychiatric di

Risk assessment of energy drinks with focus on cardiovascular parameters and energy drink consumption in Europe.

To assess the possible cardiovascular risks associated with energy drink (ED) consumption in Europe, a comprehensive literature research was performed in regard to (i) possible ED-induced dose-dependent cardiovascular outcomes, (ii) ED consumption patterns in Europe and (iii) the risks of EDs in combination with alcohol. The identified intervention studies primarily investigated acute ED effects in young healthy adults. Moderate consumption of EDs corresponding to an acute caffeine intake of up to 200 mg did not result in clinically relevant cardiovascular changes in young healthy adults. Howe

Ethanol combined with energy drinks: Two decades of research in rodents.

Many studies raised concerns on alcoholic beverages consumption mixed with energy drinks (AmED), which can induce higher rates of binge drinking and earlier development of alcohol use disorders. After 20 years of research, few studies with laboratory animals have focused on the effects of this mixture and the neurobiological and pharmacological mechanisms underlying them. We found 16 articles on AmED administration to rodents evaluating its effects on voluntary consumption, locomotion, anxiety-like behavior, memory, influence on the onset time of seizures, biochemical and neurochemical measure

Interaction of Energy Drinks with Prescription Medication and Drugs of Abuse.

In recent years, the consumption of energy drinks (EDs) has become increasingly popular, especially among adolescents. Caffeine, a psychostimulant, is the main compound of EDs which also contain other substances with pharmacological effects. This review aims to compile current evidence concerning the potential interactions between EDs, medicines, and drugs of abuse as they are frequently consumed in combination. The substances involved are mainly substrates, inductors or inhibitors of CYP1A2, psychostimulants, alcohol and other depressant drugs. Furthermore, intoxications reported with EDs and

Energy drink-induced cardiomyopathy.

We report a case of severe biventricular heart failure potentially related to excessive energy drink consumption in a 21-year-old man. The patient presented with a 4-month history of shortness of breath on exertion, orthopnoea and weight loss. Transthoracic echocardiography demonstrated severely impaired biventricular systolic function and bilateral ventricular thrombi, subsequently confirmed on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, which found in addition no oedema, inflammation or focal fibrosis. Blood tests, renal ultrasound and subsequent abdominal MRI demonstrated severe renal failure cause

Association between reported screening and counseling about energy drinks and energy drink intake among U.S. adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Possible adverse health consequences of excessive energy drink (ED) consumption have led to recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics discouraging ED intake by youth. However, limited information on ED counseling by health care providers exists. METHODS: Data was obtained from the 2011 YouthStyles Survey administered to youth aged 12-17 (n=815). The outcome variable was ED consumption (none vs. ≥1 time/week) and exposure variables were screening and counseling about ED (if doctor/nurse asked about ED consumption and if doctor/nurse recommended against ED consumption).

Energy drinks in youth: Cardiovascular risk and a call to action.

Energy drinks are stimulant formulations, not sports drinks, yet they are increasingly embedded in adolescent athletics, gaming, and social media. Most contain substantial caffeine plus taurine, guarana, and other bioactive ingredients whose combined effects may differ from caffeine alone. Randomized pediatric trials document acute changes in blood pressure, autonomic regulation, and cardiac rhythm at commercially available doses; systematic reviews, poison-center surveillance, and sudden-cardiac-arrest series identify a consistent cardiovascular signal with rare severe events. Charged to death: Energy drinks, smart drugs, and sudden cardiac death.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) in individuals ≤35 years remains a major challenge for cardiology and forensic medicine, often affecting subjects without prior symptoms. At the same time, the consumption of energy drinks (EDs) and the medical or non-medical use of cognitive enhancers or "smart drugs" (SDs), including methylphenidate, amphetamine derivatives, and modafinil, has increased markedly among adolescents, students, and athletes. This review integrates mechanistic, clinical, epidemiological, and forensic evidence to clarify the role of EDs and SDs as arrhythmogenic triggers, identify at-ris
