Pectus excavatum in relief from Ancient Egypt (dating back to circa 2400 BC).

Pectus excavatum is one of the most common congenital deformities of the chest wall. The aim of the study was to analyse 621 artefacts (reliefs, sculptures, paintings) from Ancient Egypt in terms of anatomical defects of the chest. The team which analysed artefacts consisted of historians of medicine and thoracic surgeons. The researchers found a relief, depicting a man with an abnormal shape of the chest. The relief was from Niankhkhnum and Khnumhotep mastaba and dates back to circa 2400 BC. The authors think it is possible that the relief may represent a pectus excavatum deformity and believ

Writing Bragg Gratings in Multicore Fibers.

Fiber Bragg gratings in multicore fibers can be used as compact and robust filters in astronomical and other research and commercial applications. Strong suppression at a single wavelength requires that all cores have matching transmission profiles. These gratings cannot be inscribed using the same method as for single-core fibers because the curved surface of the cladding acts as a lens, focusing the incoming UV laser beam and causing variations in exposure between cores. Therefore we use an additional optical element to ensure that the beam shape does not change while passing through the cro

Historical note on Loa loa: a reinterpretation.

Loa loa, also known as the African eye worm, is a common parasite in the central part of West Africa. As Chrysops silacea and C. dimidiata, the only important vectors of loaiasis, are found exclusively in the tropical rain forests of West Africa, the parasite's transmission is confined to this region. References by early writers to the extraction of Loa loa from the eye of a man on the Island of Ormus (today known as Hormuz or Hormus) in the Persian Gulf apparently were based on a misinterpretation of an illustration by de Bry (1595) of the blinding of a royal relative.

The conjoined twins of Löwen.

This paper discusses an unusual etching of unlike-sex conjoined twins of the syncephalus type dated 1547. The authenticity of the case is discussed in terms of the biological plausibility of such twins and in the light of mediaeval understanding of the twinning process. Unlike-sex syncephalic twins may occur as a result of dispermic fertilisation, or be an erroneous depiction of an asymmetrical anomaly of the external genitalia of a like-sex pair, mimicking the genitals of the other sex. On the other hand, the Löwen etching conforms with mediaeval beliefs that conjoined twins are divine punish

In the following contribution the relevant aspects of the broadsheet of the municipial physician from Nuremberg Theodoricus Ulsenius of 1496 are represented. The broadsheet attracted the attention of the history of art because of the wood-cut, attributed to Durer, and became famous as the so-called Picture of the Plague-Stricken Man. The history of medicine on the other hand identifies the unknown new disease, described by Ulsenius in the latin text, as an early description of syphillis. To men at the turn of the 16th century, this disease appeared as an expression of divine wrath. The Renaiss

The first successful separation of conjoined twins in 1689: some additions and corrections.

The surgical separation of a pair of conjoined twins in the year 1689 by Johannes Fatio was the subject of a recent article in this journal. The reference used as publication of the case was Fatio's book, Der Arzney Doctor, Helvetisch-Vernuftige Wehe-Mutter, published in 1752, although the case was presented in literature by three earlier sources. Two articles were published in the Miscellanea Curiosa sive Ephemeridum Medico-Physicarum Germanicarum Academiae Imperialis Leopoldinae Naturae Curiosorum in 1689 by Emanuel Konig and another in 1690 by Theodor Zwinger who described and illustrated t

Research on the Composition and Manufacturing Technology of the Single-Eared Octagonal Gold Cup Unearthed from the Turki Mountain Tomb in Inner Mongolia.

The Turki Mountain Tomb, one of the three most representative Liao Dynasty tombs, has yielded numerous exquisite gold and silver artifacts during excavation that have drawn global attention for their superb craftsmanship and distinctive ethnic and period characteristics. However, their manufacturing technology had seldom been studied. In this paper, alloy composition analysis and surface microscopic observation were performed on the single-eared octagonal gold cup unearthed from the Turki Mountain Tomb, utilizing portable X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (p-XRF) and an ultra-depth field microsc

Two bullets to the head and an early winter: fate permits Kutuzov to defeat Napoleon at Moscow.

General Mikhail Kutuzov (circa 1745-1813) brilliantly repelled Napoleon's invasion of Russia. Honored as a national hero and a savior of Russia, Kutuzov has a unique medical story. He was shot in the head twice while fighting the Turks (1774 and 1788) and survived the serious injuries seemingly against all odds. The first bullet "ran through the head from one temple to the other behind both eyes." The second bullet entered the cheek, destroyed upper teeth, traveled through the head, and exited the occiput. Massot, a French surgeon with the Russian army, wrote after treating Kutuzov's seemingly

[Chemical occupational environment of artists (painting, graphic, sculpture].

Visual artists are exposed to chemical irritants with a potential for reactions of the skin and mucous membranes. Such reactions are probably prevalent, and the professional and health consequences may be serious for persons with a low tolerance. Exposure to organic solvents may be high in silk screen printing and reinforced polyester casting. However, the risk of toxic encephalopathy requires exposure for several years. Lead and other heavy metals, plastic monomers and carcinogenic agents are used in several techniques. The health risk from these chemical agents is considered to be small, exc

A Novel Marking Reader for Progressive Addition Lenses Based on Gabor Holography.

PURPOSE: Progressive addition lenses (PALs) are marked with permanent engraved marks (PEMs) at standardized locations. Permanent engraved marks are very useful through the manufacturing and mounting processes, act as locator marks to re-ink the removable marks, and contain useful information about the PAL. However, PEMs are often faint and weak, obscured by scratches, partially occluded, and difficult to recognize on tinted lenses or with antireflection or scratch-resistant coatings. The aim of this article is to present a new generation of portable marking reader based on an extremely simplif

Syphilis in art: an entertainment in four parts. Part 1.

It is widely recognised that the history of art reveals the contemporary attitudes of societies and artists to changing patterns of social and sexual behaviour. This collection of artistic creations shows that representations of syphilis in art, over more than five centuries, are consistent with this view. The first quarter century of the morbus gallicus in Europe, starting in 1493, coincided with the spread of Renaissance influence, including printing. A host of pamphlets with woodcut illustrations reflected public alarm at the epidemic proportions and severity of the new disease, with its di

Gin Lane: did Hogarth know about fetal alcohol syndrome?

Medical historians have searched for evidence that the characteristics of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) were recognized long before its modern description in 1973. This search has often focused on the 'gin epidemic' in 18th century London, and especially William Hogarth's Gin Lane, which some authors allege reflects an awareness of the facial characteristics of the syndrome. While the 'gin epidemic' undoubtedly resulted in the increased birth of weak and sickly children, claims about Hogarth's awareness of the stigmata of the FAS are unfounded. The birth of weak and sickly children, and the hig

The dancing plague: a public health conundrum.

The phenomenon of mass, frenzied dancing affected large populations in various parts of Europe from the thirteenth century and lasted, on and off, for three centuries. The exact aetiology of the Dancing Plague (or Dancing Mania) is still unclear. Retrospective historical review of this public health problem reveals claims for causative factors including demonic possession, epilepsy, the bite of a tarantula, ergot poisoning and social adversity. It seems unlikely that Dancing Mania resulted from a single cause but rather resulted from multiple factors combining with a predisposing cultural back

Infants and Gin Mania in 18th-century London.

A study of Hogarth's engraving, Gin Lane, highlights the fact that alcoholic addiction parents results not only in the fetal alcohol syndrome, but also in other types of infant abuse. Physical trauma, loss of parents, neglect, and malnutrition are all depicted. There is the strong implication that the causes of such infant abuse, and thus the prevention, lie largely in socioeconomic and cultural fields, rather than in that of medical science.

[Diprosopus triophthalmus. From ancient terracotta sculptures to spiral computer tomographic reconstruction].

A still-born male fetus from the 19th century, fixed in formalin and presenting as diprosopia triophthalmica, was analysed by helical computer tomography and virtually reconstructed without damage. This rare, incomplete, symmetrical duplication of the face on a single head with three eyes, two noses and two mouths develops in the first 3 weeks of gestation and is a subset of the category of conjoined twins with unknown underlying etiology. Spiral computer tomography of fixed tissue demonstrated in the more than 100 year old specimen that virtual reconstruction can be performed in nearly the sa

Art and Pediatric Orthopaedics: Dürer and the Forbidden Fruit.

One of the greatest German Renaissance artists, Albrecht Dürer, noted for his realistic works of art, painted and engraved the Christ child and Eve with characteristic postures of the upper limb resembling the sequel of Erb palsy. However, there is no Biblical evidence to suggest that the Christ child or Eve had paralysis of the upper limb. It appears conjectural as to why Dürer chose to depict the limbs of his subjects in this manner.

Experimental and Numerical Study on the Failure Characteristics of Brittle Solids with a Circular Hole and Internal Cracks.

A stress analysis of a circular hole is one of the classical problems in mechanics. Internal cracks are inherent properties of materials, and they are mostly three-dimensional in form. However, studies on hole problems with three-dimensional internal cracks are still lacking. In this paper, internal cracks were generated in brittle materials containing circular holes based on 3D internal laser-engraved crack technology. Then, uniaxial compression tests were performed. The experimental results were compared with the existing literature, and theoretical and numerical simulation studies were carr
