Development of Trichosomoides nasalis (Nematoda: Trichinelloidea) in the murid host: evidence for larval growth in striated muscle fibres.

Trichosomoides nasalis (Trichinelloidea) is a parasite of Arvicanthis niloticus (Muridae) in Senegal. Female worms that harbour dwarf males in their uteri, occur in the epithelium of the nasal mucosa. Young laboratory-bred A. niloticus were either fed females containing larvated eggs or intraperitoneally injected with motile first-stage larvae recovered from female uteri. Both resulted in successful infection. Organs examined during rodent necropsy were blood and lymphatic circulatory systems (heart, large vessels, lymphnodes), lungs, liver, kidneys, thoracic and abdominal cavities, thoracic a

Some studies on Capillaria philipinensis and its mysterious trip from Philippines to Egypt (review article).

Capillaria philippinensis is a mysterious parasite and intestinal capillariasis is a mysterious disease. It is now more than half a century since the discovery of the first case in Philippines without answering many questions concerning the parasite's taxonomy, morphology, life cycle, diagnosis, pathology, clinical symptoms, mode of transmission as well as how it was transported to Egypt and how it started to spread and progressed in most Egyptian Governorates; particularly those of Middle Egypt. This article is a trial to overview all these aspects of the parasite.

Paleoparasitological analysis of rodent coprolites in holocenic samples from Patagonia, Argentina.

The aim of the present study was to examine the parasite fauna present in rodent coprolites collected from Cerro Casa de Piedra (CCP7), located in Perito Moreno National Park (P.N.PM., 47 degrees 57'S and 72 degrees 05'W), Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. Eight coprolites obtained from the layer XIII of CCP7, with an antiquity considered as 7,920 +/- 130 yr B.P, were examined for parasites. Each coprolite was whole processed, rehydrated, homogenized, spontaneously sedimented, and examined using light microscopy. Eggs of parasites were measured and photographed. All the samples were parasitized

Human intestinal capillariasis in Thailand.

Intestinal capillariasis caused by Capillaria philippinensis appeared first in the Philippines and subsequently in Thailand, Japan, Iran, Egypt and Taiwan; major outbreaks have occurred in the Philippines and Thailand. This article reviews the epidemiology, history and sources of C. philippinensis infection in Thailand. The annual epidemiological surveillance reports indicated that 82 accumulated cases of intestinal capillariasis were found in Thailand from 1994-2006. That made Thailand a Capillaria-prevalent area. Sisaket, in northeast Thailand, was the first province which has reported intes

Find of Eggs of the Nematode Dioctophyme renale (Goeze, 1782) (Nematoda, Dioctophymidae) from the Late Holocene of Northwestern Siberia.

A parasitological analysis was carried out with 29 samples of dog coprolites, soil, and manure obtained from the cultural layer of the Mangazeya settlement (66°42´N, 82°16´E), which dates back to 1601-1670 (end of the Late Holocene). Eggs of the nematode Dioctophyme renale (Goeze, 1782), which infests the kidneys of carnivores, were found in coprolites of dogs (Canis familiaris L., 1758) for the first time in Northwestern Siberia. The nematode species has not been detected in the modern helminth fauna of the region. The giant kidney worm could have entered the region with dogs brought by Russi

A rare case of ectopic dioctophymosis in Leopardus pardalis (Carnivora, Felidae) in Paraguay.

An adult female Leopardus pardalis from Jardín Botánico y Zoológico de Asunción, Paraguay was brought in from the wild, and inspected for a parasitic structure attached to the vulva. The parasite was removed and was identified as a Dioctophyme renale female. Blood samples and ultrasound did not show abnormalities in any organ, confirming the ectopic presentation of the parasite. This is the first report of D. renale in the L. pardalis and a first time for ectopic location in vagina and spontaneous elimination in a felid.

Calodium hepaticum (Nematoda: Capillariidae) in synanthropic rodents (Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus) in Eastern Amazonia.

Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) is a trichurid nematode that parasitizes the hepatic parenchyma of rodents and other mammals. Infections in humans are rare, although they have been reported worldwide. A number of factors contribute to the distribution of this zoonosis, particularly the presence of dense populations of rodents associated with relatively poor urban environments, such as those found in parts of the northern Brazilian city of Belém in the eastern Amazon Basin. This study quantified Calodium infections in commensal synanthropic rodents in Belém. Rodents were captured

Detection and quantification of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne javanica), lesion nematode (Pratylenchus zeae) and dagger nematode (Xiphinema elongatum) parasites of sugarcane using real-time PCR.

A number of different plant parasitic nematode species are found associated with sugarcane in South Africa. Of these, the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne javanica), the lesion nematode (Pratylenchus zeae) and the dagger nematode (Xiphinema elongatum) are potentially the most damaging pests. Identification and enumeration of the number of these nematodes are necessary for providing advice to farmers as well as studying the effects of various treatments in field and glasshouse trials. We report on the development, use, and extent of specificity of three sets of primers, for M. javanica, P. zeae

First report of free-ranging maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) coinfected with Dioctophyma renale and Pearsonema sp. in Brazil.

The manned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) has a highly diversified diet, that includes fish and amphibians, which may harbor infective forms of parasites, such as Dioctophyma renale and Pearsonema (syn. Capillaria) spp. Both parasites affect the urinary tract of their hosts, with D. renale being capable of infecting a wide range of mammalian species, whereas Pearsonema spp. exclusively parasitizes wild and domestic canids and felids, releasing their eggs in the urine of the host. This study reports the first coinfection by D. renale and Pearsonema sp. in the urine of a free-ranging maned wolf as

Tracking the existence of Dioctophyma renale in Parthian Empire of Iran (247 BC-224 AD).

Paleoparasitological investigation in the archeological site of the Caspian Sea littoral revealed the presence of human Dioctophyma renale infection, a ubiquitous kidney-residing helminth of mammals, during the Parthian Empire of Iran (247 BC-224 AD). This study reports the oldest human infection with giant kidney worm in the Middle East, mainly in an area where the infection is reported nowadays. The paucity of records throughout the literature suggests that the same species of parasite occurred with low frequency in the past, as well. The cemetery in the archeological site of Kiasar represen

Redescription of Eucoleus schvalovoj (Nematoda: Capillariidae), an oesophageal parasite of the Eurasian otter, Lutra lutra, in Spain.

Eucoleus schvalovoj Kontrimavichus, 1963 (Nematoda: Capillariidae) is redescribed. The original description of this species was brief and inadequate in that it was based on just a few specimens removed from the Eurasian otter, Lutra lutra (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Khabarovsk region, USSR. Detailed morphological study of several specimens of E. schvalovoj from the oesophagus of L. lutra from Spain revealed new characters, above all in males, and allows for a better characterisation of this species. Since its original description E. schvalovoj has only been recorded in Spain.

REVIEW OF DIOCTOPHYME RENALE: ETIOLOGY, MORPHOLOGY, BIOLOGY, ECOEPIDEMIOLOGY, PATHOGENESIS, SYMPTOMATOLOGY, DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT, AND PREVENTION.

Dioctophyme renale has a worldwide distribution and has been diagnosed in several wild and domestic animals as well as in humans. As numerous reports in the literature exist concerning the presence of D. renale in different animal species, as well as its diagnosis, treatment, and confirmation in new geographic areas, we reviewed existing information to contribute to the knowledge of the etiology, biology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of D. renale. Results of dioctophymosis may range from asymptomatic infection to even death of the host. Diagnosis i

First report of gasless laparoscopy for the treatment of severe ectopic dioctophymosis in a puppy.

Dioctophymosis is uncommon in juvenile dogs, both in renal and ectopic presentations. Caused by the nematode Dioctophyme renale, which shows low sensitivity to anthelmintic drugs, surgery is considered the treatment of choice. An alternative approach is gasless laparoscopic surgery, in which pneumoperitoneum is not established and the surgical working space is created by mechanical elevation of the abdominal wall. This technique maintains normobaric intra-abdominal conditions and avoids the cardiorespiratory alterations, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and inflammatory response associated with pn

Case report of hepatic calodiosis in a rescued dog.

Calodium hepaticum (syn. Capillaria hepatica) is a nematode responsible for parasitic zoonosis that can cause granulomatous lesions in the liver. Although murids are the main hosts, C. hepaticum has been documented in a wide range of mammals. Here, we report a case of hepatic calodiosis in a 6-month-old dog that was rescued in the municipality of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso state, midwestern Brazil. Even after being attended at a Veterinary Hospital, the case resulted in animal death. Necroscopic examination revealed significant macroscopic changes in the spleen, liver, and encephalus.
