This article discusses the intersections between vaccination and slavery in colonial Brazil, highlighting the arrival of the smallpox vaccine in Bahia and its spread to other regions of the Portuguese Empire including its holdings in Africa. We highlight the story of enslaved boys, who were primarily inoculated and vaccinated between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, through analysis of bibliographical and documentary sources that illustrate the actions of historical figures such as Felisberto Caldeira Brant, Francisco da Cunha Menezes and Francisco Ignácio Sequeira Nobre. Health inequities in the United States are not accidental but structural-deliberately created and systematically upheld. This first paper in a two-part series examines how American founding values, cultural norms, and historical practices established inequity as an enduring feature of healthcare and academic systems. Although the nation professed ideals of freedom and justice, Black and Brown communities were excluded through policies grounded in Anglo-Saxon supremacy and White solidarity. Wealth extracted from enslaved labor exceeded $3 billion by 1860, and later programs such as the GI Bill

This article argues that gynaecology has historically understood Black women's reproductive organs as a site of resource extraction, not healing and that contemporary performance offers a way to make the power relations entailed in this abstract visible. The histories of the transatlantic slave trade and gynaecology are intertwined and inform how the medical system interacts with Black women today. 'Father of gynaecology' and 19th-century American physician J. Marion Sims (1813-1883) was dependent on slavery in order to conduct experiments on enslaved Black women's reproductive organs-notably

Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden called for further cross-cultural and quantitative research to understand the mechanisms under their egalitarianism framework. Studying the socio-ecological factors that favour egalitarian processes or inequality and slavery maps the same spectrum of individual autonomy from two ends. Including slavery in the analysis' scope is consistent with their paradigm and complements their approach.

IMPORTANCE: Yazidi women in northern Iraq have experienced severe human rights violations through attacks by the so-called Islamic State group, with severe consequences for their health. However, no studies to date have investigated how war-related and gender-based violence, including partner violence, are associated with mental health disorders in this population.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations between Yazidi women's experiences of violence (ie, war violence, partner violence, enslavement) and their mental health.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study of 326

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of changes in the proprioceptive signals induced by muscle vibration on multi-finger interaction and coordination. We hypothesized that unintended force production by non-instructed fingers (enslaving) would increase with muscle vibration while synergy indices during steady-state force production would drop. The framework of the uncontrolled manifold hypothesis was used to quantify indices of multi-finger synergies stabilizing total force during steady-state force production and anticipatory changes in these indices (anticipatory synergy

In 1804, Cuban physician Tomás Romay tried and failed to create the first yellow fever vaccine. The article analyzes his experimental efforts, foregrounding the enslaved and enlisted subjects at the center of this early vaccine trial. Though a scientific failure, this brief experiment, the desires and logics embedded within it, and the measures deployed in its wake - in the form of European whitening campaigns - allow us to consider the political uses of immunity during the Age of Atlantic Revolutions. Historicizing these events within the wider geopolitics of the Caribbean, the article explic

American surgeon J. Marion Sims (1813-83) is regarded by many modern authors as a controversial figure because he carried out a series of experimental surgeries on enslaved African American women between 1846 and 1849 in an attempt to cure them of vesicovaginal fistulas, which they had all developed as a result of prolonged obstructed labor. He operated on one woman, Anarcha Westcott, thirty times before he successfully closed her fistula. Sims performed these fistula repair operations without benefit of anesthesia but gave these women substantial doses of opium afterwards. Several modern writ

This study analyzed skeletal health disparities among African American and Euro-American males of low socioeconomic status born between 1825 and 1877. A total of 651 skeletons from the Cobb, Hamann-Todd, and Terry anatomical collections were macroscopically examined for skeletal pathologies related to dietary deficiencies and disease. Individuals were separated into age, ancestry, birth (Antebellum, Civil War, Pre-Reconstruction, and Reconstruction), combined ancestry/birth, enslaved versus liberated, and collection cohorts. These groups were statistically evaluated using ANOVA and χ(2) analys

This paper questions the utility the social category of "refugee" as defined by international human rights discourse. The notion of "racializing assemblages" supplies an analytic tool for situating the deportation machine and mass incarceration of refugees/asylum seekers as "death spaces" within modern Western humanity. Building on discussions related to "political death," "social death" and "muertas en vida" (living dead), this paper explores an alternative framing of "the refugee" that relies less on human rights and more on other forms of emancipation. The history of "African American fugit

When Benjamin Franklin published the mortality rates from smallpox during the Boston smallpox epidemic of 1752, he revealed that Blacks not only had a higher mortality rate from smallpox (12.8%, 62/485; 8.9% for whites, 452/5,059), but once inoculated, had less protection from fatal disease (mortality rate 5.0%, 7/139; 1.2% for whites, 23/1,954). His report was thus the first publication to document racial disparities in a disease and its treatment. The differential outcomes came about in the context of slavery, poverty, and war, the predecessors of the social determinates of health that we ob

INTRODUCTION: The fear of scrutiny central in social anxiety disorder (SAD) points to a problem of the interpersonally perceivable body. Whereas the predominant cognitive-behavioral (CBT) account of the disorder understands this as a problem of excessive self-focused attention, the phenomenological literature reveals it as a sign of a fundamental transformation of body experience. The lived body absent from experience becomes the object body at the forefront of it. The present paper contributes to this literature by refining and grounding these notions in first-person descriptions of concrete

Modern slavery remains pervasive across many economic sectors. Progress toward eradicating it has been partially hindered by a lack of tested, comprehensive policy responses. Using data on millions of cattle transactions in Brazil, we evaluated how ranchers changed their selling behavior after being added to the "Dirty List," a public registry that names and shames employers found to use modern slavery. Dirty Listed ranchers significantly reduced direct sales to slaughterhouses that signed sustainable supply chain commitments but evaded sanctions by laundering cattle through compliant intermed

This study aimed to examine the mental health issues and trauma faced by Iraqi IDPs post-2014. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a literature search in PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar, identifying 208 articles. After excluding 190 articles for duplication and ineligibility, we ultimately included 18 studies. The Joanna Briggs Institute critical evaluation checklist was used for quality assessment. Studies involved 5,764 participants from diverse ethno-religious groups including Arabs, Kurds, Christians, and Yazidis. Participants were mostly female (55.5%), male (38.4%), and the sm

Four historical events provide context for racial injustices and inequities in medicine in the United States today: the invention of race as a social construct, enslavement in the Americas, the legal doctrine of Partus sequitur ventrem, and the American eugenics movement. This narrative review demonstrates how these race-based systems resulted in stereotypes, myths, and biases against Black individuals that contribute to health inequities today. Education on the effect of slavery in current health care outcomes may prevent false explanations for inequities based on stereotypes and biases. Thes

Phase reduction is a general approach to describe coupled oscillatory units in terms of their phases, assuming that the amplitudes are enslaved. The coupling should be small for such reduction, but one also expects the reduction to be valid for finite coupling. This paper presents a general framework, allowing us to obtain coupling terms in higher orders of the coupling parameter for generic two-dimensional oscillators and arbitrary coupling terms. The theory is illustrated with an accurate prediction of Arnold's tongue for the van der Pol oscillator exploiting higher-order phase reduction.

The year 2016 marked the 125th anniversary of the birth of physician-venereologist and passionate writer Mikhail Afanasievich Bulgakov (1891-1940). From his essays emerges a figure of a man torn between medicine and literature. His works contain fragments pertaining to his personal ailments and health problems, which are described with medical precision, for example, morphine addiction. Bulgakov's essays are full of metaphors and references to the political situation of Soviet Russia. He compared this situation to syphilis as in treacherous infections, a slow destroying and enslaving of a soci
