Otogenic Enterobacter cloacae meningitis complicated with pneumocephalus.

Pneumocephalus refers to a pathologic collection of gas within the cranial cavity and is mostly caused by head trauma and neurosurgical procedures. Spontaneous nontraumatic pneumocephalus is a very rare condition. We herein report an unusual case of community-acquired bacterial meningitis with a combination of acute otitis media, Enterobacter cloacae, and nontraumatic pneumocephalus. A 75-year-old woman presented with fever, mental change, and neck stiffness. Brain imaging demonstrated pneumocephalus and fluid collection in the left mastoid air cells. E. cloacae was isolated from both blood an

The new species Enterobacter oryziphilus sp. nov. and Enterobacter oryzendophyticus sp. nov. are key inhabitants of the endosphere of rice.

BACKGROUND: Six independent Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming, nitrogen-fixing rod-shaped isolates were obtained from the root endosphere of rice grown at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and investigated in a polyphasic taxonomic study. RESULTS: The strains produced fatty acid patterns typical for members of the family Enterobacteriaceae. Comparative sequence analyses of the 16S rRNA as well as rpoB genes allocated the strains to two well-defined groups within the genus Enterobacter, family Enterobacteriaceae. The analyses indicated Enterobacter radici

Identification of qnrE3 and qnrE4, New Transferable Quinolone Resistance qnrE Family Genes Originating from Enterobacter mori and Enterobacter asburiae, Respectively.

The qnrE family was designated in 2017. To date, two qnrE alleles have been discovered that are carried by plasmids. Here, we identified a new quinolone resistance gene, qnrE3, in the chromosome of Enterobacter mori clinical isolate 08-091 in China. qnrE3 conferred decreased susceptibility to fluoroquinolones, similar to qnrE1 and qnrE2. To investigate the precise origin of qnrE1, qnrE2, and qnrE3, 79 qnrE-bearing strains producing 30 qnrE variants were retrieved from the NCBI database. Phylogenetic analysis illustrated two major clusters, QnrEEmo and QnrEEas, produced mainly by the E. mori an

Colistin resistance in Enterobacter spp. isolates in Korea.

We investigated the colistin resistance rate among 356 Enterobacter spp. clinical isolates from eight hospitals in Korea. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed by broth microdilution. While 51 of 213 (23.9%) Enterobacter cloacae isolates were colistin-resistant, only six of 143 (4.2%) E. aerogenes isolates showed resistance. We also identified the skip well phenotype in eight E. cloacae and three E. aerogenes isolates. Multilocus sequence typing for E. cloacae and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR for E. aerogenes reve

Klebsiella and enterobacter: antibiotic resistance and treatment implications.

KLEBSIELLA: spp. and Enterobacter spp. are widespread throughout the environment and also carried by humans. Both genera are well-recognized community and nosocomial pathogens and cause significant infections. They are a common cause of respiratory and nonrespiratory infections. Klebsiella spp. is responsible for 1% to 5% of all cases of community-acquired pneumonia and between 0% to 23% of those acquired in the hospital, and its frequency is greater in alcoholic patients. The majority of cases are unilateral in the posterior segment of the right upper lobe. Lung abscess can occur after a pneu

Superinfection of chronic multifocal osteomyelitis with Enterobacter cloacae.

A case is presented of a 6-year-old boy from Nigeria who developed chronic multifocal osteomyelitis with bilateral and symmetrical proximal humeral involvement. Superimposed changes of acute osteomyelitis were noted on the histopathological evaluation of the lesions. Cultures from both sides were positive for Enterobacter cloacae, which was presumably contracted during intravenous therapy for typhoid fever in Nigeria 1 month prior to his presentation.

Nonspecific induction of beta-lactamase in Enterobacter cloacae.

Induction of beta-lactamase was monitored in a strain of Enterobacter cloacae exhibiting high resistance to most beta-lactam antibiotics. Large amounts of the enzyme were induced not only in the presence of beta-lactams, but also in the presence of other bicyclic molecules such as folic acid, thiamin, tryptophan or haemin. Moreover, complex media (such as Trypticase soy broth and Schaedler's broth) and various body fluids (serum, pleural fluid and cerebrospinal fluid) also possessed considerable induction potency. Neither 'specific' induction (by beta-lactams) nor 'non-specific' induction (by

Genotypic-phenotypic discordance for cefiderocol against Enterobacter hormaechei.

OBJECTIVES: The Enterobacter cloacae complex (ECC) is an emerging global cause of healthcare-associated infections, marked by high mortality and limited treatment options due to extensive antimicrobial resistance. Cefiderocol is increasingly used against carbapenem-resistant pathogens, including metallo-β-lactamase producers. However, reports of treatment failure, particularly in isolates with borderline MICs, indicate uncertainty regarding the relationship between phenotypic susceptibility and underlying genomic resistance mechanisms. The objective of this study was to characterise the genomi

Antibiotic combinations for controlling colistin-resistant Enterobacter cloacae.

Enterobacter cloacae is a Gram-negative bacterium associated with high morbidity and mortality in intensive care patients due to its resistance to multiple antibiotics. Currently, therapy against multi-resistant bacteria consists of using colistin, in spite of its toxic effects at higher concentrations. In this context, colistin-resistant E. cloacae strains were challenged with lower levels of colistin combined with other antibiotics to reduce colistin-associated side effects. Colistin-resistant E. cloacae (ATCC 49141) strains were generated by serial propagation in subinhibitory colistin conc

Enterobacter sakazakii in infants: novel phenomenon in India.

E. sakazakii has been implicated in necrotizing enterocolitis, bloodstream and central nervous system infections, with mortality rates of 40-80%. Two cases of E. sakazakii infections; one preterm very low birth weight neonate with meningitis and a two month infant with bacteraemia, are described for the first time in India. The first baby succumbed to the infection while the other responded to appropriate therapy. Powdered infant milk formulae have been implicated in causing neonatal infections and the first baby was on formula feed with classic signs of sepsis and meningitis. The second infan

Sublethal effects of ultraviolet A radiation on Enterobacter cloacae.

We report the sublethal effects of ultraviolet A (UVA) on Enterobacter cloacae in comparison with those produced in Escherichia coli. UVA-induced sublethal effects were investigated in either bacterial membrane and at tRNA level. Limited dependence on oxygen concentration for photoinduced inhibition of biochemical membrane functions and low levels of oxidative damage during the irradiation period were found in En. cloacae. On the other hand, ultraviolet spectroscopy and reversed-phase HPLC analysis of hydrolysed tRNA showed that radio induced damage to tRNA is similar in En. cloacae and E. col

Characterization of arylamine N-acetyltransferase in Enterobacter aerogenes.

N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity was determined by incubation of purified Enterobacter aerogenes enzyme with 2-aminofluorene (2-AF) as the substrate, followed by high pressure liquid chromatography assays. The NAT activity from E. aerogenes was 0.58 +/- 0.08 nmol/min/mg protein for 2-AF. The values of apparent K(m) and Vmax were 0.72 +/- 0.14 mM and 2.45 +/- 0.29 nmol/min/mg protein, respectively, for 2-AF. The optimal pH value for the enzyme activity was 7.5 for the 2-AF tested. The optimal temperature for enzyme activity was 37 degrees C for the 2-AF substrate. The molecular weight of NAT

Enterobacter Infection after Spine Surgery: An Institutional Experience.

BACKGROUND: Gram-negative surgical site infections (SSI) following spine surgery are becoming increasingly more common owing to a broad perioperative antibiotic usage targeting gram-positive organisms. Enterobacter species have been reported to be the most common gram-negative bacteria following spine surgery. METHODS: We queried our institutional database for Enterobacter SSIs after spine surgery at a single institution from 2009-2016. Relevant demographic, clinical, and operative variables were collected. We compared this cohort to patients who had non-Enterobacter SSI during the same perio

Composition of O-antigenic lipopolysaccharides from Enterobacter cloacae.

Analyses have been carried out on lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from 14 strains of Enterobacter cloacae representing different O serotypes. All of the products appeared to have a composition and architecture typical of enterobacterial LPS, but points of interest include the absence of phosphate residues from the core oligosaccharide, the presence of both L-glycero-D-mannoheptose and D-glycero-D-mannoheptose (ratio usually about 4:1), and the presence in lipid A of small amounts of fatty acids with odd numbers of carbon atoms (mainly C13) in addition to tetradecanoic acid and 3-hydroxytetradecanoic
