Natural antibiotic susceptibility of strains of the Enterobacter cloacae complex.

The natural susceptibility to 70 antibiotics of 104 strains of the Enterobacter cloacae complex was examined using a microdilution procedure in Isosensitest broth. One hundred and one clinical strains designated as 'E. cloacae' were identified as E. hormaechei (n=65), E. asburiae (n=20) and E. cloacae genospecies 1 or 2 (n=16). Apart from fosfomycin susceptibility, there were only minor differences in natural antibiotic susceptibility patterns. All species were naturally sensitive or naturally sensitive and intermediate to numerous beta-lactams (e.g. carbapenems, aztreonam, acylaminopenicillin

Exogenous endophthalmitis caused by Enterobacter cloacae following water gun injury.

Enterobacter is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacillus. Enterobacter-associated endophthalmitis is rare. We report Enterobacter cloacae-associated traumatic endophthalmitis following a water gun injury with no visible external entry wound. A 46-year-old man presented with features masquerading as traumatic uveitis in his left eye following injury by water stream from a toy gun. He was started on topical steroids but within 2 days of initial presentation, there was worsening of vision, presence of hypopyon in the anterior chamber and presence of vitreous exudates confirmed on ocular ultrasound B-sc

Omadacycline for a Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacter cloacae-Associated Wound Infection.

Introduction: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) are problematic pathogens because infections caused by these organisms are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. These organisms often harbor multiple resistance mechanisms, which makes it difficult to treat their associated infections. Treatment typically consists of intravenous antibiotics that are selected based on the specific susceptibility pattern for the pathogen. Data on the use of oral antibiotics for the treatment of infections caused by CRE are sparse. Case Presentation: In this case, a 62-year-old female pre

Enterobacter cloacae Periprosthetic Joint Infection After Bariatric Surgical Anastomotic Leak.

Four weeks after a bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA), an immunocompetent, 61-year-old, Caucasian man presented with a periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) of the left knee by Enterobacter cloacae (an enteric bacteria). The most likely source of his infection was due to an anastomotic leak after a bariatric surgery done 6 months before TKA. There is a growing focus on stratifying the risk of PJI after TKA. Hematogenous seeding of enteric bacteria leading to PJI is an unexplored risk that will become more prevalent as bariatric procedures before TKA continue to increase in frequency. We pr

[Pneumocephalus caused by neonatal Enterobacter cloacae infection in a case].

OBJECTIVE: Gas-containing encephalo-meningitis is very rare. There have only been a few cases reported in the literature. The majority of neonatal cases reported in literature died. We report a case of a 5-day-old neonate who developed diffuse pneumocephalus from Enterobacter cloacae septicemia and intracranial infection. METHOD: This neonate was initially treated with penicillin and mezlocillin. He also received phototherapy, intravenous infusion, correction of acidosis and other supportive therapy. Complete blood count, C-Reactive protein, cranial CT scan, blood culture, cerebrospinal fluid

Partial purification and properties of Enterobacter cloacae heat-stable enterotoxin.

Cell free preparations of the whole-cell lysate and ultrafiltration (UF) fractions of broth cultures of a strain of Enterobacter cloacae, isolated from a Puerto Rican with tropical sprue, were assayed for their ability to induce in vivo net water secretion in the rat jejunum. The whole-cell lysate and UM-10 retentate of broth cultures were inactive. The UM-2 retentate and filtrate were active at a concentration of 100 mug/ml or more; the toxigenic activity was entirely retained, and increased to 1 mug/ml, by a UM-05 membrane; washing this retentate yielded a fraction with an activity of 10 ng/

Outcomes of Enterobacter cloacae-Associated Periprosthetic Joint Infection Following Hip Arthroplasties.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) represent a serious complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA) and are associated with significant morbidity. While recent data suggest that Enterobacter cloacae is an emerging source of PJI, characteristics and outcomes of E. cloacae-associated infections are rarely described. The study aimed to present and describe the findings and outcomes of E. cloacae-associated PJI in our department. METHODS: This is a retrospective descriptive study of patients who underwent revision THA for E. cloacae-associated PJI between 2011 and 2020 and

Enterobacter cloacae aggravates metabolic disease by inducing inflammation and lipid accumulation.

It is well known that gut microbiota imbalance can promote the development of metabolic disease. Enterobacter cloacae (E. cloacae) is a kind of opportunistic pathogen in the intestine. Therefore, we hypothesized that E. cloacae accelerated the development of metabolic disease. To answer this question, we used E. cloacae to induce disease in guinea pigs. We used H&E staining to detect the pathological changes of liver and aorta and used Oil Red O staining to evaluate the lipid accumulation in the liver. And that we used a kit to detect AST content and used Western blot to detect protein levels

Enterobacter cloacae Sacroiliitis with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome in an Adolescent.

Enterobacter cloacae has emerged as an important nosocomial pathogen, but is rarely a cause of sacroiliitis. Herein, we present the first reported case of Enterobacter cloacae sacroiliitis associated with sepsis and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). A previously healthy 14-year-old boy presented with low-grade fever and pain in the left side of the hip that was aggravated by walking. Pelvic computed tomography (CT) showed normal findings, and the patient received supportive care for transient synovitis with no antibiotics. However, there was no clinical improvement. On the third day

Emergence of resistance to ceftazidime during therapy for Enterobacter cloacae infections.

The mechanism of resistance to ceftazidime in two clinical isolates of Enterobacter cloacae that emerged during therapy with broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics was studied. Both isolates acquired broad resistance to advanced-spectrum beta-lactam drugs other than imipenem. Biotyping confirmed strain identity in both cases, and no new plasmids were detected in the resistant isolates. Both resistant isolates produced beta-lactamase constitutively. Slow but definite hydrolysis of ceftazidime was demonstrated by using purified beta-lactamase in a spectrophotometric assay. Further evidence that

Enterobacter cloacae ulceration in a failed corneal graft: a case report.

A 70-year-old female developed a bacterial ulcer in a previously rejected corneal graft. Cultures identified the pathogen as Enterobacter cloacae. Intensive topical antibiotic therapy arrested the progress of the ulcer, and the epithelial defect healed in one week; there was no resultant stromal thinning. Factors which may have predisposed the cornea to ulceration by this organism of relatively low virulence include chronic oedema following graft rejection, topical corticosteroid therapy, and tear insufficiency.

Targeting Enterobacter cloacae attenuates osteolysis by reducing ammonium in multiple myeloma.

AbstractMultiple myeloma (MM)-induced bone disease affects not only patients' quality of life but also their overall survival. Our previous work demonstrated that the gut microbiome plays a crucial role in MM progression and drug resistance. However, the role of altered gut microbiota in MM bone disease remains unclear. In this study, we show that intestinal Enterobacter cloacae is significantly enriched in patients with MM with osteolysis. Through fecal microbial transplantation and single bacterial colonization experiments in a 5TGM1 MM mouse model, we found that intestinal colonization of E

Infective endocarditis by Enterobacter cloacae: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Enterobacter species are Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, facultative anaerobes typically motile due to the presence of peritrichous flagella. E. cloacae, the species responsible for the majority of Enterobacter infections in humans, is part of the intestinal microbiota and may cause infection in patients that have previously received antimicrobial therapy or who have been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. E. cloacae may cause several infections, such as pneumonia, urinary tract, skin and soft tissue and intravascular infections. Infective Endocarditis (IE) is a rare disease with notable m

Molecular Characteristics of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacter cloacae in Ningxia Province, China.

The emergence of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) has become a major public health concern worldwide and a new challenge in the treatment of infectious diseases. The molecular characteristics of Enterobacter cloacae in Ningxia China are unknown. In this study, we reported 10 carbapenem-resistant E. cloacae isolates from the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University, the largest university hospital in Ningxia between January 2012 and December 2013. Bacteria isolates were identified by Vitek2 compact and the identity of non-duplicate E. cloacae isolates was further confirmed by

Characterization of ertapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae in a Taiwanese university hospital.

The emergence of carbapenem resistance in Enterobacteriaceae has become a great concern. The aim of this study was to characterize ertapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae isolates from a Taiwanese university hospital. A total of 355 nonduplicated E. cloacae isolates collected in 2007 were analyzed by antimicrobial susceptibility testing with and without an inhibitor of efflux pumps and AmpC β-lactamase. The phenotype of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL), profile of outer membrane proteins (OMPs), and clonal relatedness were investigated by the double-disk synergy test, urea/SDS-PAGE, and p

Enterobacter cloacae: an "ICU bug" causing community acquired necrotizing meningo-encephalitis.

Enterobacter cloacae is a gram negative bacillus that is ubiquitous as a contaminant and a pathogen in adult, paediatric, and neonatal ICUs. Its transmission is almost exclusively nosocomial with community acquired infection reported rarely. We report a case of community acquired, rapidly progressive E. cloacae meningo-encephalitis in a neonate. A three-week-old term infant presented from home, having been discharged from hospital within two days of delivery. She rapidly progressed to multi-organ dysfunction. Initial CT of her brain showed evidence of severe hypoxic changes and herniation of t

Multiply resistant mutants of Enterobacter cloacae selected by beta-lactam antibiotics.

Mutants of Enterobacter cloacae, selected in vitro with ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, carumonam, or aztreonam, fell into several distinct classes. Three mutants highly resistant to nearly all beta-lactam antibiotics were stably derepressed for beta-lactamase production. Although no other changes could be detected, virulence in a mouse septicemia model was decreased in two of these mutants. One mutant, 908-Ssi, showed selectively decreased susceptibility to ampicillin and cefotetan. A change in beta-lactamase expression was thought to be responsible for this. Alterations in the production of two ou
